FrettyMcgee Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 D'Addario 9-46 for at least the last 20 years...or more. But Elixir 's are slowly replacing the D's cuz they feel great, last for freaking ever, and I'm getting too lazy to change strings.
sixesandsevens Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 PS: I discovered recently that something like 9.5-13-17-34-46-64 would be optimal for me in standard tunning. However, sets like that don't exist. I would have to purchase each string separately. You could give these guys a try: http://www.juststrings.com/guitarbulkstrings.html I knew a guy who used to buy boxes of individual strings back in like '89 or so. They were packed in long carboard cartons and he'd just keep six boxes next to each other and dip in as necessary. We were a simple people and changed strings only when they were broken. Everybody's guitar had at least one string that was prone to break more than the others, so it was cost effective that way. "Sixes and sevens"... Anything to do with Annihilator? Sadly, no (I just checked out the track. Thanks!). Years ago I was joining some forum (Line6?) and at a loss for a name. I must have found the inspiration somewhere around my desk at the time. I've carried it with me for most of the music forums I've joined since then for continuity. It was years later when I looked it up and realized just how appropriate it might be.
sixesandsevens Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 D'addario 10s on everything. Colour (Canada spelling) coordinated for dummies like me! (And they just sound beefy!)I started on super slinkys and switched over to XLs because of the color coding (love it!) and reduced packaging. I also dug the tone, I guess, but I didn't do any kind of double blind test or anything. Years later, I tried elixirs and experienced just how long coated strings last. I started to find elixirs online for like $8-9/pack and given that I can play them almost indefinitely with a simple wipe down (I play just an hour or two a day), it's a good deal. Further, amazon's got a deal going periodically where you get a $2 mp3 credit with your purchase, so I guess I just got a set of elixirs for like $6.50.They did have an issue for a while where they dropped the anti-rust coating on their plain steels, but apparently that's been resolved. I just placed an order to see if they arrive with the coating or not from this particular amazon seller.
Steve Haynie Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 For the last few months the go-to guitar has been an '82 Hamer Sunburst with Ernie Ball .010's on it.
Crimsontider Posted December 14, 2012 Author Posted December 14, 2012 Thanks for the replies. Adds insight.
RichRS6 Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 Ernie ball 10 - 46. 440 tuning. Black 78 Sunburst is the go to first guitar.Same on my Standard but I strung it over the top of the Stop tail and it feels much better this way, more slinky !A nicer guitar to play but not quite as practical due to the enormous pointy body. Both sound equally huge and I can't say I really notice any difference whatever strings are on them.
Disturber Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 Worst string brand = Boomers (they sound like ten wasps in a tin can).Favourite string brand = Pyramid Strings (they sounds so sweet, and feels just great).I have used 10s for ages, but am going to try 09's on a couple of guitars again. I have nines on the T62 and they are great. So I'll just take BB's advice and just turn up the amp instead.
Crimsontider Posted December 14, 2012 Author Posted December 14, 2012 Just a side bar (A thread starter privilege ) Is this below blue book at $550? Are they like Diablo's except with two single's ? I know the wood is Ash. Seems awful cheap for a 1990 USA. The pups is not a big issue for me due to the ease of changing. http://www.ebay.com/...=item1c2e580e44
Feynman Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 Centauras get no love, which is silly - naturally they are fantastic insturments. It still boggles my mind to see Diablos sell for as much sometimes, but of course Diablos are also extremely nice guitars. I get the impression that the Centaura just didn't have its own niche or something - the odd man out. I'd say that's probably market price, but I'm no expert.
Willie G. Moseley Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 Robin Savoy---custom-made w/ maple fretboard (only one ever built) and unique (and logical) fretboard inlay. Fender 150s; start w/ .009 but I can handle .010s.But I'm primarily a bass "player"
Gino Posted December 14, 2012 Posted December 14, 2012 Favorite guitar right now: My Newport. Strings on that one: Pyramids 11-48. Same on my Special FM.Pyramids 10-46 on my Strat and Tele (due to longer scale-gives about the same feel as the 11s on the shorter scale Hamers)..
Crimsontider Posted December 14, 2012 Author Posted December 14, 2012 I found the answer. This same guitar was sold for $350 a year or so ago and was owned by a member. I guess your can get a Centaura on he cheap more often than say a Cali. Back to the strings.
Rodan Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 I have two regular Hamer Diablo's and one that's the limited, birdseye-necked model...so I'll just say it's Diablo's.Going back to my Ibanez days, I found that pulling notes sharp with a Floyd' cost me a lot of .010 high e strings. That got me away from .010 - .046 and into .009 - .042. Turns out the lighter set feels all-around better to me...well, for a long time now. It may sound puss to guys who like heavy sets, but I think .010 - .046 served its purpose in my learning/character building stage. Now, I just don't enjoy the fight anymore.I used to use Ernie Slinky sets only. Lately though, I've OK'd 'Markley and other brands that set-up guys happen to carry. Brand isn't as important to me, I guess.
Submariner85 Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 Favorites are d'addario 10-46 with wound g string. As far as guitars go, I have 6 mediocre ones right now. I like them all but they're not top notch. Of those, my current favorite is my Epiphone Goth Explorer with Slash Pickups.
tombo Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 2006 Monaco Elite (which was found used and in ex. cond. @ GC) D'Addario XL 110s. I've tried all the brands and always come back to these. If I gigged all the time, I'd use the coated version.

proxmax Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 PRS artist NAMM model with ebony board. EB Rockers 9 - 46
gorch Posted December 15, 2012 Posted December 15, 2012 Thomastik Infeld Sliders became my favorites. They are on any Hamer right now except for the MIK Standard. 10s series on the Newport and Standard Custom and 9s series on the Tally. The Sliders are brass coated and create great overtones. Played with a brass coin provides great ringing tones. The Red Special Bo Diddley has the Optima Gold on it and the MIK Standard is equipped with .10 orange Pyramids.
