ptdesign Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 I bought this Eclipse off the bay. Asking was 1,049 shipped. I offered 750.00 shipped and got it. All fine and good. But it showed up with a odd screw in the side. (for mounting a wireless?) It almost appears stock as the finish puckers around it like a grommet. With no cracks /slpits. I don't think anyone could countersink a pan head screw into it now without spalling the finish. look like a factory upgrade? This picture from dealer shows it. I didn't catch it. No other pic or description of the screw in add.
currypowder Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 Is it possible that is the original strap holder location? I've never owned an Eclipse, but the strap holder on my 79 Sunburst is in that position, a little off center towards the top.
ptdesign Posted July 25, 2015 Author Posted July 25, 2015 Interesting. My other Eclipse has it right in the middle. it's a 96' This one a 95'I think it would be a flat drilled surface as the strap button would be contacting it flush. Really appears a screw was in place during the finish process.
kizanski Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 Notice the scratches in a perfect radius around the center of the screw head.
ptdesign Posted July 25, 2015 Author Posted July 25, 2015 Black. Appears original in every way. Here's the original add pic:

crunchee Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 Is it possible that is the original strap holder location? I've never owned an Eclipse, but the strap holder on my 79 Sunburst is in that position, a little off center towards the top.I actually DID have a mid-'90's Eclipse over a decade ago, that DID have the strap button in the 'offset' position, and NO signs of it being moved from the 'center' location...no touch-ups, no doweling/plugs, no nuttin', and I made sure to look. It was factory Vintage Orange, and it matched two other VO Eclipses that I had at that time, other than those two having the standard strap button locations. I actually liked the 'offset' position of the strap button, I think it offered better balance (which is my bet why Hamer did it during the early days), though it didn't really need it, it wasn't head heavy or anything like that.Edited to add: That was the ONLY 90's Hamer that I remember seeing with an offset strap button, other than perhaps on Standards.WHY this Eclipse has that extra screw, I have no idea. Sorry!
Steve Haynie Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 Let it go. Someone may have experimented with the strap button position and did not want to look at the hole when they moved the button back to the center. That raised ring is probably from the screw filling the hole being bigger than what was in the strap button. If you take the screw out you have a hole and a possible ragged edge in the finish.

I gotta believe the paint would have cracked had the wood gotten pulled up to that degree. That bevel is a mystery.

I gotta believe the paint would have cracked had the wood gotten pulled up to that degree. That bevel is a mystery.I'm sure I've seen an Eclipse with a heavily offset button but I can't be 100% sure but I could see that if he was trying to plug the hole with a screw (why ?) and bearing in mind the hole would be 3 to 4mm if he used a 5mm screw it could have quite a countersink which forced the paint up like that. And to reason it didn't crack: now obviously Stike's your gospel on this but my take is that modern (ie: non cellulose based) paints and polymers are designed to be a lot more elastic than cellulose hence it tends not to crack or check as much if at all hence the paint 'mushroomed' rather than cracked.Either that or it was another one of those day's in the Hamer paintshop and it never cured LoL
Punkavenger Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 Definitely existing from the stock strap mounting hardware ... moved the the strap mount location then filled the hole with a screw. The new screw did not cause the mushroom effect that was from the previous hardwareThats my story and Im sticking to it
Ting Ho Dung Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 Notice the scratches in a perfect radius around the center of the screw head. I did and I still don't know what it means.
cmatthes Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 The original strap location will have a countersunk hole for the strap button/rubber washer. The hole that lacks that feature is the one drilled after the guitar left the factory.I'm going with the relocated strap button crowd here. I'll bet that the rubber washer is sitting flat on the surface.
unfun75 Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 For $750 shipped you got a heck of a deal, screw or no screw.
maggieo Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 Black. Appears original in every way. Here's the original add pic: Man, that's a beauty!

Steve Haynie Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 So you were screwed by unscrewing. That is screwed up.
Ting Ho Dung Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 It's a great guitar. You didn't get screwed. Adam Jones said his favorite LPC Silverburst has a screw in the back. Or maybe it's in the headstock. I can't remember. Anyway, he swears that's what gives his guitar the tone it has. But then again, he's more Liar than EVH. But it is there. I've seen pictures. But wait. Forgot about my thread about photoshop and fake IDs.
ptdesign Posted July 25, 2015 Author Posted July 25, 2015 Yea, it was a good deal. I play dive bars so it is gonna get beat.
Hfan Posted July 26, 2015 Posted July 26, 2015 Beautiful Eclipse. Maybe we can start a poll to recommend an accessory that could be mounted with that screw? I got nothing though.
