The Hamer of mini/lunchbox valve heads!

So, due to only being a home player nowadays, I sold my 120w Bugera (a 6505 clone) head as it was far too loud for home use! I'm thinking of buying a Peavey 6505 Mini head (which can attenuate between 20w, 5w + 1w) just so I can get my hi-gain sound at lower volume. Now... I've looked at other 5w amps and, barring the Blackstar HT-5RGH and the Orange Mini/Dark Terrors (too loud for what I need), nothing has grabbed my attention!

Now, considering I play drop-tuning's and hi-gain metal, is there anything out there that is better than the 6505 mini? I know there's certainly cheaper ones so money isn't limited as I won't go over £500.00 (for the head) anyway (I've already earmarked the Harley Benton 2x12 Vintage cab for under £175.00)!

I know just shy of £700.00 is a lot for a mini head/cab but I want good sh** and, for once in my life, I can actually afford it!

What says you lot?

Find one of the Marshall 1 watt 50th anniversary heads that are decade specific in tone...I have the JMP and am absolutely floored at how perfectly it cops 70s Classic Rock JMP tone.

The JCM or JVM may be more up your metal alley. Marshall MIE quality and tone and within your budget.

Have you looked into the Ceriatone OTS-20? It has a lot of versatility in a head. Oriented toward the "D-type" tone rather than "M-type" but it seems to be able to do a lot.

20w is too loud that's why I'm thinking the 6505 mini as I can drop it to 5w or 1 w for room volume but no tone loss...

Mesa Boogie Express Plus 25w? Not exactly 'lunchbox' sized,

but weighs next to nothing. Maybe just a hair over your budget,

but not much. Can be operated at 5 watts...

Carvin V3 mini. Lots of features, within your budget, but lots of

anti-Carvin sentiment out there...

I'm interested in the Peavey Mini too...

I just paid £300.00 ($450.00) shipping/import tax on my new £600.00 [ESP Edwards E-EX-125D] guitar and am not paying any more import tax!!! So, whatever I buy has to already be in England! I'm highly favouring the Mini 6505 but thanks for the great suggestions!

You won't get any of the Carvin/Mesa mini's over here for anywhere near £500.00 (think £700.00/$1,100.00)...

When I saw the price of the Paycheck 15w! Oh how we all laughed!

So, we can't beat the 6505 MH then? I've actually looked at loads online today and out of all of the lunchbox offerings (Orange/Hughes&Kettner/Laney/ENGL/Blackstar etc), the 6505 sticks out for me! I think I'm gonna go with that plus I'll get a Vintage 30 loaded 2x12 to go with it! :D

+1! That 'Paycheck' is considerably more than MY paycheck could even think of handling right now.:wacko::ph34r:

Good choice. The 6505 is perfect for the sounds you are going for. Plus, you get a 2x12 cab!

The 2x12 cab is not included with the 6505! It's a separate purchase coming in at £155.00 (approx. $250.00). The 6505 MH comes in at £450.00 making a total of £605.00 ($920.00) for head/cab...

I think I'm decided on the 6505. Nothing else comes close enough to go for anything else...

There is a new competitor! The EVH 5150 III 15w (that can be cut to 1/4 output). I'm still favouring the 6505 mini but it might come down to which is cheapest in the January sales :P The EVH is cheaper than the 6505 mini over here! TBH, I don't think that anyone will convinve me that I should get anything other than the Peavey!

Shootout:

There is a Mesa that doesn't weigh a ton?

Yeah!!!

Hehe, Yah, according to Mesa's website it weighs 27 lbs, but seems much lighter to me.

I'd say it's comparable in weight to the mini Carvin, which is really light...

Over here the EVH is $200 more--straight to Ed's pocket, no doubt.

The 6505 seems to have many more features, albeit fait en Chine.

Won't stop me from getting one soon...

The Peavey just batters fk outta that EVH IMO!

Well that sucks! My car's engine management light came on this morning so I decided to scrap it (it's had loads of work and a replacement engine this year but I've had enough so it's going). I spent my amp money on a replacement 'A to B' car (an old Mazda 323 with 92k miles on the clock) so the amp is on hold for a few weeks! I will get the 6505 MH though :)

You`re british, aite?

Tried the Laney Ironhearts?

The IRT Studio head is awesome. Switchable to 1w as well.

Well, not British no = I'm English (there is a difference)! Thanks for the heads up on the IRT Studio! Now I'm unsure again! I will probably need an OD in front of the Laney for the tone I want but that's not too bad. I'm liking the Laney a lot! Now = I don't know which I'll buy (which means, in time = I'll probably get both) :P
