svl Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 It's been posted for sale for a while. HEL is a great luthier/builder/your term here, would imagine it's a damn spiffy geetar.
Sugartune Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Pretty cool. Very interesting....except for that damn trem. I've never played one like that, but they're so offensively ugly to me.
django49 Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 FWIW, those pickups, with 3 way switching for each, are very versatile.

mc2 Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Well....between BCR Greg and Shannon at HEL, you have to top luthiers who did the work and both know Hamers and Gibsons really well. So, it is sure to be a good guitar and accurately discribed.
Ting Ho Dung Posted December 3, 2015 Author Posted December 3, 2015 I seriously think that is fucking cool.
dhuber Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 I like it. I bet they have more money in that guitar than what it's selling for. I'd love to play it but I can't bring another guitar into the house.
Ting Ho Dung Posted December 3, 2015 Author Posted December 3, 2015 Does anyone want to talk me out of this? I've contacted the seller.
GASguy Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 FWIW, I think it is beautiful and cool looking as well.
mrjamiam Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 Does anyone want to talk me out of this? I've contacted the seller. It will match your dog nicely.
ptm1diver Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 I'd be concerned about the neck joint. Did they have to shave down the Hamer neck heel to fit that thin Gibson body and neck pocket?
Studio Custom Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 My first question would be why? Did the original neck break? Then destroy a Duotone to attach it to a different brand guitar? It's odd and wound be a hard sell, as the previous comments indicate.

The Shark Posted December 4, 2015 Posted December 4, 2015 I think it's going to have a "relaxed" feel with regard to string tension. Just not sure that it will sound like an SG. I'd want to try it out.
Ting Ho Dung Posted December 4, 2015 Author Posted December 4, 2015 I haven't bought it, yet. Probably not going to. Too many things in the air for me to spend the change just now. Maybe something will come through and I'll have disposable income. I really just think that is a cool looking guitar. And those pickups are awesome. I have a friend who has one in his guitar but not a set. I spoke with Shannon last night and he said it really plays nice. Then he started mentioning people I know and some of the projects he's working on for them so I believe him. Greg apparently did the assembly and it's set up like a Gibby with the 13 or so degree neck angle. Hence the pup height and shims under the Kay. I wonder why he didn't just go with the TOM.
T-51Fred Posted December 5, 2015 Posted December 5, 2015 I am not a fan of P-Rails. Have them on a very nice handmade LP style and they are dismal. By far the most beautifully made guitar I own, incredible neck, and I never play it. It's due for a pup swap. P-Rails P-90 tones have no brass, no balls. HB tones nice for clean jazz tones, but the functionality ends there. Rail tones lifeless. I have three way mini-toggles to maximize tone possibilities and have found only a couple of configurations that had a little mojo to them. My advice is to get the best pups for the tone you want. Just ain't no one-size-fits-all pups.
dhuber Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 I typically like keeping my guitars stock as regards to pickups. However that's already been butchered. I would think the P-Rails would sell quickly. A few years ago when I first saw the P-Rails I wanted one in the neck of my Tele. The urge has passed. I did not think the price on that guitar was that bad. I'm sure they have a whole lot more into it.
T-51Fred Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 I think the Hamer SG is really cool. I'd prefer the beefier Hamer neck to the SG's thinner one. To me an SG is a Humbucker platform.
Ting Ho Dung Posted December 6, 2015 Author Posted December 6, 2015 Wouldn't HB fit right in there where the prails are or are they a different size?
T-51Fred Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 Wouldn't HB fit right in there where the prails are or are they a different size?My P-rails went right into the HB slots and the rings git perfectly. I'm guessing that this one was originally an HB guitar. I love the Kahler trem also. I bet these guys would consider swapping pups to make a sale.
HELShane Posted December 7, 2015 Posted December 7, 2015 This is my guitar. To answer some questions: I have no idea why Greg used the neck he did or where he got it. The 67 SG body with a removed neck had been hanging on the wall for years.. During a sabbatical from working at BCR (me, not Greg) , Greg put it together with the Hamer neck, shot it black with a spray can and then ripped it apart. Why? I don't know, never asked, why Greg does some of the things he does is best off not questioning! Why the neck angle. Greg installed a Hamer sustain block bridge in the guitar, probably just because he had it, knowing him. This the need for a higher angle. He then yanked it, plugged it, was going to put a TOM on it, and got distracted by other things.... The neck set is solid, hasn't moved and has no tuning issues or wonkyness, however, I wasn't around when Greg set it in, so I'm not quite sure of the methods he usedThat's where I came in... If you notice my avatar.. Like Hamers, and I like the way Kahlers feel (just not keeping them in tune), and, I had the Kahler fixed bridge laying around... Sooooooo.. Why not.. I also figured it would give it more mass over a TOM and lessen the chance of it neck divingThe paint is original 1960 Cadillac Pellham Blue lacquer with Non aged clear on top. I did so many aged Pelhams at that time that I just wanted one "as new" to show the difference.Pups.. I chose the P-Rails because I like em and I wanted a versatile guitar. The bridge is actually the Hot version. I play a lot of metal and believe it or not, the PRails do down tuning very well, I think because of the fat coil. I actually like my P-90 equipped Jr with an overdrive set as a boost in front on my MP1 for stuff like Amon Amarth, but the noise is for the birds. The P-rails stop this. That being said, it's not a distortion pickup or a metal pickup (hence the overdrive), but it does have some grunt to it in bucker mode and will push your amp.The neck pickup is one of my favs now, I use it in combination with the Alternative bridge 8 in a lot of builds because, while, no, it's not a p-90, it's close and it's got the option of hum bucking if you wanna play some chunky rythem stuff (great for COCs "albatross)I won't be swapping out the pups to "attempt" to make a sale, if someone wants new pups they are free to do so, but I installed the mini switches just to control the P-rails in P90/bucker/blade modes, and, while they could be used for other purposes, at the price I have the guitar listed at, I'm already in the hole. And if it doesn't sell, well, I'm not heartbroken about it put it that way, it's one of my favorite guitars. It's just not an HEL, so, it's "expendable" If someone wanted different Duncan pups, I'd certainly install them at time of sale and sell the P-Rails separately to another customer,Someone mentioned that it's probably being sold below cost.. Ooooooooo yes... thats a $400+ paint job my friends! Now add up the parts... Yeah.. If it was not a personal guitar I've had for several years, I could definitely write it off at a loss on this years books!

I don't know, never asked, why Greg does some of the things he does is best off not questioning! Well I know why, because I was there. To bust balls. He had the busted SG, and he had a Blitz (I think it was a Blitz) with a hacked up body and a complete neck and Sustain Block. At some point, I mentioned that he should put them together and make one good guitar. His eyes lit up and he said, "Yeah! Imagine the shitstorm on the HFC!" And that's the only motivation he needed. Welcome to the HFC, Shannon! I'm looking forward to my Standard's HELification!
Ting Ho Dung Posted December 7, 2015 Author Posted December 7, 2015 Wonderful writeup Shannon. It was really a pleasure talking with you the other evening. I really like your guitar and the color. I'm really not a Pelham fan but on that guitar it rocks and I really like it. Welcome to the HFC.
