Clip-on Chromatic tuner recommendations

Pieman

Question

Posted

I think I want to buy a clip-on chromatic tuner as a gift when I visit my cousin in Europe next month. I know he has a 12-string.  Any recommendations?  Is a clip-on the way to go?

Snark's seem to be popular and they do seem OK as tuners but I find that the LCD's on them are of low quality so with a brand new battery they are somewhat readable and as the battery drains they degrade to barely readable.

I like this one by D'Addario - the display is small but legible and it's pretty unobtrusive.

I agree on the Snark,  with a new battery it is visible but that doesn't seem to last long.

I have the D'Addario and I use it daily on my repair bench, even on electric/acoustics with built-in digital tuners because the D'Addario always works better LOL. Five stars.

I have a newer snark, it's black and says super tight...    seems to work better than the previous

one I had...   was a deal, $5 on black Friday,

Love the D'Addarios. Very bright readout and hardly noticeable on the headstock. Great for 'pedalboard-free' jams.

I snagged a couple of the TCElectronics PolyTune Clip tuners as stocking stuffers for my sons a couple of years ago, and they work better than anything else I've tried.  I actually WON an all black one last year on their FB page contest, so am even a bigger fan of those now.

Bright, accurate display (visible in sunlight too, unlike my standard TU-2), easy to use, not expensive, slim profile...not much to not like.

I have a  TCElectronics PolyTune Clip tuner too, and while it's great as a one note at a time job... it advertises you can strum a chord and it'll will show you how they all are... and it always shows one string clearly out of tune... but when you check that string by itself, it's fine. My dealer said they're all like that (but the pedal works).

I have two and my sons each have one - we also have the PolyTune pedal - they work fine, actually.  Maybe yours is an older one or something?

Quick comparison

I've been trying to figure out which of these to buy.  Great question.  Thanks.

Snark. Cheap and works great. Buy the bulk batteries from Amazon and the price for batteries is better.

TC Polytune is the best.  Fast and accurate.   Snarks work well but break too easily.

That image is from the tc electronic website, it's of the white casing or original version. They also offer a black casing or newer version although I believe the only difference is the outer casing color

I have new respect for my Snark clip on tuner.  I accidentally dropped it straight into my drink during a gig last Friday night and figured it was done for. When I got home, I took the back cover off and removed the battery to let it dry out. After cleaning it up on Sunday (it was pretty sticky after dunking in a solo cup of vodka & Red Bull) I put it back together and to my surprise, it still works fine.

Does the Red Bull make the vodka faster acting?  At least at the outset/onset?  I need to explain this to my wife, who is a substance abuse counselor.  Last week the substance of choice for one patient was two bottles of liquid hair spray.
