That’s just a “Special”.

The “FM Special” didn’t appear until the mid/late 1990s!

The difference is that the 80s Specials have a paper-thin one piece curly maple veneer top, whereas the Special FM has a thick bookmatched flametop.

Well, plus the earlier version weee string-thrus with Sustainblocks v stop/tunomatic.

$3000 for an '82 with changed saddles and frets worn down to the wood?  Where's my credit card?!

Here's another '82 in rare white with matching headstock and black hardware (AND FRETS!) for almost a grand less.

That belongs to a fellow HFC member, and quite frankly, I am amazed it's still available 🤔

Those saddles look weird.

actually I think those are legit; i have a 1980 Special and Butcher has an early Special with similar looking saddles. I think they must have used a couple of different sources in the early days, and 'back-of-bar-napkin' "blueprints" Hamer handed to the vendors might have been inconsistent to be fair.  There are several variations, some machined, some cast (as in the case of the string ramps).  I measured three different sustainblocks for the 2FIG project and all three of them had different dimensions.

Thanks! When sale for white one fell through last year I took that as my sign to keep it, then relisted at a not particularly aggressive price when I realized it has literally been in closet for six months. Got it on here in the first place. Edit: Thanks @cornjulio

To be fair, that's not a bad price for the worlds only "four digit serial number" 82 Special that was mistakenly inked with a 1980 five-digit production serial.

Sure Kiz but I think this one is in slightly better shape and slightly older. Nonetheless there's always the option to offer a price; it's also possible the seller will drop theirs. On another note, I think I read somewhere that early models could occasionally have neck issues? I could be imagining things.

No.  Not true.

You may be confusing your recollection with neck twists that happened in some of the Tom Holmes bound and crowned Sunbursts in the ‘70s.

I had a '79 black B&C Sunburst that had a bad neck.  Got it at Music City in Orlando.  Could have waited on a replacement, but it was going to be a month or two (I was impatient even back then).  Got a Rich Bich instead.  Hated that guitar.  Skinny neck.  It's still in Orlando somewhere!

I had a 1980 sunburst that I bought several years ago with a truss rod making noise. Very annoying. Took it to a shop and they said we would have to remove the fretboard to fix it which didn't sound that great either so I sold it being open about my reasons.

I wish I hadn't organised the sale through reverb back then 🥵

Possibly heresy to some here, but. . .

When fair condition 80's Specials are listed at prices higher than very good to excellent 2010 - 2020s Les Paul Traditionals and (non custom shop) Standards, I'm out of the Hamer market.

I'm keeping my Studio Custom though.

$14,000.

"1980s Specials for $14,000? What a bargain! That is a bargain for me, I think I will buy some."

Nah.  Just having fun with Kizanski.  I'll let you know, if I do.
