I'll second Cliff Williams--an inspiration in that, he plays what he should, instead of what he could.

Still feeling the love for tubes
Bass Guy Dave replied to MCChris's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Single best tone I ever had was a modded Fender Bassman 50 head (McIntyre "Bluesmaker" mod) into a 4x12 Straight cab with Vintage 30s and a P90 Special. (despite that, I've since managed to sell/turn both the guitar and amp, lol!) I'll have to get that combo of git and amp going again someday -- it was just too good to not repeat. Earsplitting, but jsut beyond pleasure to windmill an E chord and tremble. Best hybrid guitar amp (tube pre /SS amp) I'd encountered was a Hughes and Kettner ATS120, but it really needed to be cranked, too. Bass, I can take either. I got to play a time or two through a Magnavox SVT and matching 8x10 which was pretty cool. (also a Fender Bassman 50 and the original 2x15 cab which was quite impressive and cool for 50 watts.) I tend to like the SS Tace stuff a little better than the Tube Trace, although the tube's not bad--just preference. I have a JCM900 50 watt Dual Reverb and 2x12 that hardly gets used right now with the young kids around, but it's pretty cool. -
I'd heard a couple of their songs on the radio in '05. A couple of the 'creepy' ones, (which was a pretty spot-on call by MCChris,) and a balladish thing that was worse. Then, without knowing who it was, I'd heard "Side of A Bullet" and thought "...now, that's not a bad song." I didn't know who/what it was about at the time--and ironically, it was hearing the guitar solo that caught my ear the most, thinking "....wow. there's somebody who's trying to really play again..." when I found out it was Dimebag, I had to go back and listen to some more of his playing, and issue a general apology for somewhat dismissing him as a player earlier without listening first. I still like the tune, but that's about it for Nickelback. Saw ayoutube thing of them doing a ZZTop cover, which was okay. Otherwise, I generally avoid 'em at earliest opportunity. More power to 'em though. However it happens, they made some success. No small feat.

List of members you've met IN PERSON.
Bass Guy Dave replied to zorrow's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Just a few. BCRGreg Alpep (LostArt) Tobereeno all at a NAMM show Kurt L, while I worked at a music store in Corpus Christi. Almost met mirrorimij while in Corpus, but it was not to be, due to unforeseen circumstances... everyone I've met in person or online/deals has been top notch. Great deals with Brooks/ Serial and Bruce919. Great group of folks. Would have loved to make a 4321 jam, or the like... -
Don't know if it was intended as 'sad' per se, but Simon & Garfunkle's "Only Living boy in NY" is about the most haunting song i've heard... One of my favorite lyrical ones is Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" Also really liked "She's Gone Away" by King's X for a meloncholy thing Interesting thread.

gone...poof
Bass Guy Dave replied to HamStd's topic in For Sale - Wanted to Buy - PIF - eBay & Other PSAs
No kidding...I'd love to have the Proto to complement a newer Phantom I've got. It's just not gonna happen right now though. Peter's a top of the top-notch guy, though.... -
Any Bon Scott-era AC/DC to remind me of the essence of the 'modern' rock era after Little Richard and such in the 50s. (ala-- good times) Preist's Screaming for Vengeance, Point of Entry (Nothing wrong with British Steel, Hell Bent,Sad wings, etc just I could be tempted to skip a song or two at times) Earlier stuff was pretty revolutionary and some great tunes...I just think they hit their stride at this point and had a nice variety of tunes between these. (also helped that I was 12 at this time..perfect timing) King's X "Ear Candy" Brilliant album that has a bit of everything on it. No wasted notes, solid grooves, meaningful lyrics and just crazy overall talent. Great loud. Keb Mo "Just like you" Kinda like the above record, just from a bluesy guy. top of the head, there. Have to think on some more (and check out a few listed here)

Cruise Basses - Pickups and stuff
Bass Guy Dave replied to BottomE's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I think the stock Duncans were (or were close to) the 'Vintage Jazz.' The actives were either Basslines (same as Duncan) or EMG, though usually Duncan, I think. The stock pickups sounded good in both era Cruises. I went to some Active Duncans (with the little switches,) that they haven't made for probably 10 years now, just for pickiness' sake, rather than a true necessity. Great basses. Pics? -
I've got an '86 that I love. I like to think of it as a Chaparral Single-cut Neck is slightly on the shallow side, but very comfy for the speedy stuff. (as though I could play speedy stuff, lol.)

Dug Pinnick, with some crazy vocal range, even though he's pushing 60, I think...

Great pics! Us guys, pre-haircuts and afterwards...

"Get Over Yourself" Guitar Solos
Bass Guy Dave replied to kizanski's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
More 'Solo Guitar' rather than 'Guitar Solo', and one of my biggest spine-chill licks is the little fragment leading into the end of "Got to get you into my life." LOVE that lick and tone, though I've never actually learned to play it. Another favorite less-is-more solo is from Joan Jett's "I love Rock and Roll." My current benchmark for not-a-single-wasted-note would probably by Ty Tabor's lead on "Mississippi Moon" from King's Xs "Ear Candy" album. I can't hear a mention of Fishbone without thinking of THE sickest, funkiest, out-of-control bass solo I've heard in "Bonin' in the Boneyard.' Straight from the heart...or lower. Good thread. -
I got to meet Vinnie Moore at the EBMM ALl-Star jam in '01 ( 7 years ago? Jeez...time flies.) Coolest guy in the world and fantastic player. Looked like a ton of fun, BTMN!

The best rock bassist ever?
Bass Guy Dave replied to Special J's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
The 2 guys I'll ask myself "What would _________play?" are: Cliff Williams and McCartney. Cliff Williams is amazing. For better or worse, (mostly for the worse,) I've seemed to have the ability to throw down some chops that people like, but that's a whole different league from being able to play. Playing the notes of an AC/DC bass line is not challenging. Playing it and making the song groove most certainly is. He simply plays the right notes --well. ("Gone Shootin" from Powerage being one of my favorite examples.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmayGJ4D7L8 Lots of great players listed here (the Ox paved a mighty wide trail,) but Williams has become a real benchmark for me. Excellent thread. -
So, so, so very sorry to hear. Peace to you and your family. Best Wishes

In vinyl, it's Judas Priest. With the exception of 3 or 4, I've pretty much got every album on vinyl since it was far and away the majority of what I listened to as a teenager. What I didn't have on vinyl I had on cassette, then started getting some CDs. Got 'em in a box somewhere, along with the turntable I picked up in a pawnshop for $20.00 that I never bought a belt for. One of these days... Great thread.

Found a great Keb Mo vid. Killer player, great vocalist, and tons of soul. (edited to say that I realized he also breaks a string halfway through!) Plus he plays some Hamers, too (but not in this one...)
-
I found a couple of Hamers - what are they?
Bass Guy Dave replied to jerseydrew's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Chaparral Max bass and a Phantom GT. You can't lose with either. Either I would consider a great score. Especially the GT. One fellow's opinion... Best Wishes -
The Blitz was my first 6 string Hamer. Bought it in a pawnshop for $85.00 in the early 90s. (Body was cracked diagonally from upper bout to control jack... ) was originally metallic blue and had to strip to repair. I even found out later I knew the original owner, who had traded it before the break occured (great local player who taught it all the right notes:D ) A friend and coworker of mine did the conversion for me. The sustainblock trem wasn't my thing, so we thought a hardtail would be more stable after the repair. He had a nice piece of mahogany at the time, and with the shape the rest of the guitar was in, I didn't worry about a close match in color. The guy who did the conversion was Pete Skermetta (who actually built the custom side of things for Fernandes for the last few years (don't know if he's still there now.) He'd built guitars for customers at the little shop we worked at that were just awesome--So I bugged him a bit and he did that for me as a quick freebie (I thought the guitar might still wind up as a wall ornament after the break,) and it turned out great. (funny enough, when we looked at it closer later, we'd realized that he'd mounted the tailpiece a smidge off center ) Can't complain, though. Free, quick and solid as a rock. It's an '83 and a great sounding guitar. (Gotta make a sound clip now, I suppose! ) Best Wishes

An older one of everything at the time. Hamers, an EB-3, MusicMan and Charvel, plus a couple cheapies a 2nd gen Phantom Custom I used to have plus a Blitz bass, P-90 Special, Duotone Custom and Chaparral Sustainiac that used to be in the fold... and the most recent addition, an import Chap bass (that is actually pretty dang cool. Great pics everybody! Best Wishes

Can it really get any better? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nO_U6VLsOg and I had no idea he could also do this...but why doesn't it surprise me? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SCZv7786KY
