I have had extensive conversations about PAF pickups with my favorite winder. He's seen the 50's Gibson specs, and the ONLY requirement for magnet suppliers to Gibson was that they be made of magnetic material! Alnico 2,3,4,5 were all used interchangeably (and even an occaisionally ceramic). The thing is that sometimes, there was a magic set, and those are what became known as the "PAF" sound.

Blue Oyster Cult - Pick any. Motorhead; No Sleep till Hammersmith -and- Golden Years EP. The later is one of the most kickass live recordings I've ever heard. Have it on original vinyl, but now is an add on to other compilations. The Ramones It's Alive. Frenetic, frantic, and just great fun. Who Live at Leeds. No more to add but yepp, the definitive Who. This is a hard topic to dive into; I had a longstanding argument with one of my bandmates years ago. Some material just is better live and some you can only pull off in the studio.

I find nothing wrong with a guy who has become obsessed with ideas and is trying to pursue them. How to get power tube distortion with larger tubes at lower volumes has been a long-standing holy grail for some. There is absolutely no way this guy can make a living doing it now, or in the future. If this is what floats his boat, and the so-called cork sniffers, so what?

WOW, I just saw him on an airing of his induction into the UK Hall of Fame Awards ceremony. During his performance, he seemed a bit weakened, but gave it his 110%. Conversely, Led Zep's induction performance was Wolfmother covering Communication Breakdown.

Ok, I'll play too, Yes, that is a Cali with ebony and dots.

Wow, a BIG time congrats, Kevin. Long overdue happiness is catching up. BTW, who's the hot chick in the blue dress?

I'm close to you agewise, and want to rock harder than ever. My 17 year old keeps yelling at me to turn it down, LOL. What a turn of events.

It is actually one of the better ones. I used to know the Mgr, but he moved on. Still go there for what I've always done; looking for used gear. Actually scored a Digitech 2120 Artist w/pedal board for $115. Go figure. Tried it out, didn't like it, and sold it for a substantial profit. You should try being there from 12-3 on a Saturday; makes my head hurt even thinkin about it.

WOW, I had the EXACT same experience recently, except it was a David Hasselhoff impersonator. And he shrieked like a little girl the whole time. Wait till things calm down before you go back. Then you'll be treated to the "Heh Dude" experience which is GC-speak for "I need you do buy something from me or I can't meet my quota". Real cool.

Opinions/price advice on Hiwatt Studio Stage?
seeker replied to polara's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Grat link, but don't think that's a Harry Joyce era piece. He was out of the Hiwatt production business by then. Would still go after it before the other one!! -
I've had Darkbursts in my Blue Studio before he had them on his website. Outstanding service, and great, great pickups. The treble bleed cap is to maintain the treble in a neck pickup when you turn the vol down on it. Usually, it will get muddy. I put one in my Blue Studio and would never take it out. However, have never felt the need to do it on others cause I switched to Alnico 2's in the neck with windings in the 7.5k range; much less susceptible to muddiness. I now get my non-bigboy pickups from Wolfetone Pickups. He does a 20 minute Q&A on what gear you have and what sound you're after. Nails em spot on, at least for me. Very competitively priced.

Marty, Sorry to hear of the loss of your father. May you remember him well, for he will always be with you if you do.

? about overdrive/distortion
seeker replied to hamerican gigolo's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Another, somewhat higher priced alternative, is the Fulltone Fat Boost. It can go from transparent boost to overdrive/distortion. One thing it does do to your signal is make it seem more clear and crisp. One of those hard to describe, you gotta be there things. -

A relatively inexpensive alternative is the Bad Monkey (Digitech). I've got many overdrive/distortion pedals, and it gets more than it's fair share of time. -

Weren't those just a bit above the BIN price new? If they're anything like the Eastern European (Czech?) quality, outstanding guitar! -

Which Rios are in it now? -
The volume pots have a steep slope the last 1 to 2 ticks (8/9 to 10). Gives you a more substantial volume swell for a small turn of the vol knob (for soloing). Have you been in contact with Hamer yet? Am curious to know how much latitude you have for "custom" work. Personally, I think you should ask for a gold-sparkle Newport, with Floyd Rose and a Hockey Stick headstock as an opening gambit. Anything should be easy after that LOL
