  1. It depends on the amp. If it is cathode biased, no. Provided the tubes are within production specs (which they should be if you buy from a reputable dealer). If it is "fixed" bias, then yes, you need to at least have the biased checked. BTW, the term fixed bias refers to the fact that the bias is set to a fixed value uisng a variable resistor (pot). What amp is it?
  2. I still have a Kustom silver tucknroll ported 2x15 that's a monster. Tried to get rid of it once, but just couldn't make myself do it.
  3. Here was one I ran across the other day on the local Craigslist; was flagged pretty pronto. LOL Overdrive Special by Dumble Im in the process of getting rid of my husbands junk. I dont know why he needed to many guitars and amplifiers but I am selling them all. This one says Overdrive Special By Dumble on the front, and my husband bragged about how he got it specially made and how great it was. It is all black and uses vaccuum tubes like the old tv sets. Since all of the new brand name ones are going for about 2000 new, I only ask about half of that. I want to sell this stuff quickly. I'm also gonna be posting more stuff soon so check back. They later posted a PRS for 500 bucks.
  4. There is no definitive answer; past a certain point it's taste. Having said that, I agree with most of the above. Entwhistle is just in a class of his own, talentwise. Close second are Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, JPJ, and yes, McCartney (65-70). Tony Levin has done some amazing stuff, although not all would call it straight rock. Plus, I've got a soft spot in my heart for ole motorboy hisself, Lemmy.
  5. That's a pretty wide open question. It depends on what type of music you play and what your amp can do. If you do want distortion, it does depend on what type. Typically, tho, you can get distortion from your amp, from pedals, or a combination. One thing would be to get a cleaner sounding amp that when boosted distorts. In that case, there are a few pedals that have seperate boost/distortion functions/footswitches, which would give you clean, amp overdriven by boosting, and stompbox distortion into clean. Even at that, it depends on whether you want to do leads or chords. Some stompboxes are great at leadwork, but have absolutely no note separation, making them useless for chords. Others are great for chords, but are anemic for single notes. So, what you after?
  6. There's nothing like personal experience to jam the point home if it goes bad. I do think that Fedex Ground tracking is a bit more flakey than UPS, but not by much. Fedex Air is a different beast; pretty accurate. I bought something from a guy in Texas and he offered to Fedex Air it to me. I was a bit floored, but accepted (no extra charge). Wouldn't you know, the 5'1" delivery driver wouldn't drag the package to my door. I had to go to the truck and get it. Alright, so it was an unloaded 4x12, but come on now!
  7. I know it's not geeky and pretty mainstream, but the Led Zeppelin DVD set is just an awesome chronicle.
  8. Sorry for the loss, my heart really goes out to you. All the best for a difficult situation.
  9. Grack!!! This is an absolute bargain, and Dave is a Great Guy to deal with! Besides, PLEASE, someone buy this because my willpower is weakening mightily . . .
  10. Older thread in a related vane I will say some folks are consistent.
  11. Don't know if you count these as early presents, but have been on my really, really want list the last few years: GE UK Branded Mullards, and not for a kings ransom either.
  12. Just from looks alone, it isn't your typical guitar pot. It does look an awful lot like, as they said, panel pots. I did do a look at their spec sheets, for giggles, when I thought you were looking for an NOS or good-used replacment. Of the current lineup, it looks pretty close to this one: Bourns Panel Pot Which, luckily, has an audio (log) opition vs all linear. If they can't tell from the old part number using their in-house documentation, that is definitely one thing you need to check out with a meter. The kicker is the whisper-quick rotation. Most of their current pots have more typical torque specs. Some of them have a WIDE range. Since that is one of your muy importante attractions to this particular pot, suggest you highlight that (if you haven't already) with the Bourns folks.
  13. Dumble has been known as Alexander and now Howard. He is still alive, but have heard he has some health issues. If he is building amps, it is definitely at a slow rate. Do believe some later Dumbles do have an FET on the input. Most of the goop is for hiding other things. I'm not a fan of most of the examples of Dumbles, but this one is kinda cool: Steelbender Dumble Sample Still prefer the Trainwreck sound. Recognize they are the polar opposites of amp design. Dumble - Complex, lotsa switches, heavy on preamp overdrive. Does benefit from being cranked, but not crucial. Trainwreck - Simple, Stripped down, and on the edge of outta control. Distortion first starts at the power tubes, which have to be pushed. Distortion then works it's way back thru the Phase Inverter, and only then to the preamp gain stages.
  14. Could you post a Full size pic of the bottom w/numbers? I'm not sure if have all the numbers; have got photoshop with a bunch of filters to try and read. Believe the first few are a date code (82 would make sense for mid 80s) but believe there should probably be a 504 in there somewhere too (500k).
  15. Not to mention that all prospective original buyers had to sign a lengthy agreement to not allow photos, etc. of the insides. Used to have a copy/link to a .pdf copy of the agreement plus his "ground rules" (not allowed to ask when it will be done, etc.) but have since lost track of it.
  16. Are those guitar pots you're looking for? (can't see photobucket from this machine) If so, might as well get em new. Spec sheet: http://www.bourns.com/pdfs/PDB241-GTR.pdf Supplier (Mouser): http://www.mouser.com/catalog/632/580.pdf
  17. Have never played even one, but sonically there are a few pedals that are getting darn close (if not there). Now, a Trainwreck Express on the other hand . . .
  18. LOL! The whole while I'm thinking, "I KNOW that name...WTF is it??" Me Too! I now remember he sent me a package a few years ago. Dang if I can remember what it was. THD 2x12??
  19. Yeah, this comes up when almost every Dumble comes up for sale, but the market will support it or not. Why are good muscle cars now tens of thousands? I could get one for 600-1000 bucks when they were a just few years old. Personally am not a big fan of all-things Dumble. But, if I had the cash, I'd snap up a Ken Fischer Trainwreck in a VA-minute. Brad Paisley did. That makes it ok, doesn't it? LOL.
  20. I'm the one wearing the black "Wolfmother" T-shirt.
  21. I'm a relative late-comer, 2001. It is a bit sad, so many things have been lost (otoh, some fights are best left in the dustbin). There was this gig-story thread I printed out in 2002 that was eye-tearing hilarious. Been trying to find it for the last few weeks. It's gotta be around here somewhere!
  22. Heh, while we're all speculating, let me have a go, LOL. First off: Boomers. Jol doesn't like doing them, so this is a convenient time to just cut em off. Let folks blame Fender. Crowns: Not inconceivable Jol did this as a defensive maneuver, before FMIC gets down to talking turkey on any specific models (and potential conflicts). The most obvious is their use on the Standard, which, um looks like another guitar. OR, Jol also has wanted to phase out Crowns anyway, and this is a convenient time to cut em off. Let folks blame Fender.
  23. I like em on Studios also. Agree that Victories might look a bit odd on a Standard. Have always thought that parallelogram inlays that match the body's angle direction would be kinda cool.
  24. Heritage was actually sold (partly?) to a local Kalamazoo lawyer. They've just reopened their doors. It's now the wait and see phase.
  25. I didn't misquote you, nor did I change the meaning of your post. And yes, you are naive if you think any of the things you mentioned have any bearing on what a corporate bean counter sees on a <Ace Frehley voice>P&L statement</Ace Frehley voice>. Yes you did. I AGREE with you that that bean counters don't give a whit about such things. Bean Counter = Bottom Line. "It depends on whether FMIC will use that cache or just go for the bottom line." Leaving that part out completely changes the meaning. If the bottom line/bean counters win, then they won't use that cache, which means all that Jol/GP stuff doesn't matter. Period. Agree. If you're trying to say that bean counters always win and none of this matters, then say so.
