DaveL Posted May 16, 2025 Posted May 16, 2025 (edited) Did, I just become a loothier? YUP!! lol pics of my precision guitar parts kit... got it for a good deal used. I did some light sculpting of the heel.. My training was watching Mike Shishkov do it for 15 minutes at the 2003 Hamer Open house... glued it... (clamps from harbour freight $4 each) and resting peacefully. Will get to grain filling soon. My plan is to shoot it with aged clear nitro... and then hit it with Oxford Vintage formula nitro and lightly relic and check it... I think the grain looks pretty good. More pics to come. edit... out of clamps and I cleaned up the heel a little more, not as elegant as a Hamer or Gibson Custom Shop but I was happy with it... done by eye with a rasp and a file (more harbour freight) I could have rounded it more but I didn't want to take away extra material. Seems like a very resonant neck and body. Weight is 4 lbs 15 oz as is, guessing high 7, low 8 f;;lly loaded. Edited May 19, 2025 by DaveL 26 Quote

Travis Posted May 16, 2025 Posted May 16, 2025 Oh, man…. That is going to be badass… I’ve been considering one of their Junior kits for a while but haven’t pulled the trigger yet… 2 Quote

I'm in the sanding, whiskering, sanding stage and plan to seal before I glue the neck in. Fun times! 2 Quote

DaveL Posted May 17, 2025 Author Posted May 17, 2025 For anyone considering a kit build, here is a really good thread on tgp that I’m referring to as I started on this one. https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/pgk-korina-flying-v-build.2544746/ 1 1 Quote
Ua D Posted May 17, 2025 Posted May 17, 2025 The grain looks great on that V. What are you gonna load it with for pickups? can’t wait to see this done 1 Quote

Yes, I love this grain. Was surprised by the quality of the wood. I’m going with something in the vintage hot variety. (Duncan Saturday Night Specials, OX4’s or Wolfetones) I do have some Gravelines that I haven’t tried yet. Quote
Ua D Posted May 17, 2025 Posted May 17, 2025 Nice. I have a Gravelin I just had Josh build me going in a project that's almost done. Good luck with the project. 1 Quote
Jakeboy Posted May 18, 2025 Posted May 18, 2025 Is that the one that was FS on TGP? I almost bought it!! This is really cool! Quote

DaveL Posted May 31, 2025 Author Posted May 31, 2025 Hi, some progress updates... I cleaned glue residue, sanded, grain filled... I used a walnut filler, which didn't quite pop... I hit it with a light hit of watco danish oil in walnut which did the trick, not vintage correct, but I thought it gave it a nice antiqued look... I'm going to let it cure for a week... use some light sanding sealer and then start the nitro (Oxford Vintage formula). so far, I've been happy enough with this project that I grabbed another Korina V from PGK's in stock bodies. (ETA next week). I'm going to talk to them about the possibility of a 1 pickup V kit... (which I'm sure is an upcharge) for some kind of V Junior mashup. pics... contemplated a stinger, but I don't think I can cover this up... 9 Quote

DaveL Posted July 6, 2025 Author Posted July 6, 2025 (edited) Update pics... I started spraying this weekend, sanding sealer, hit it with a very light amount of Stew Mac Vintage Amber and Aged Clear. Masked the neck and hit the headstock with Black nitro. The clear is Oxford Vintage formular nitro (spray can) which is a thinner old school formula which will check and chip nicely. level sanding every so often... it's going on very thin so it may take a while. I thought the color and grain looks good. Alot of work but I think it’s gonna be cool. Edited July 6, 2025 by DaveL 11 Quote
RobB Posted July 6, 2025 Posted July 6, 2025 (edited) Wow. The figuring on the back of the body looks like white oak. Are you doing a korina-yellow color or a tinted clear? Edited July 6, 2025 by RobB Quote
Dave Scepter Posted July 6, 2025 Posted July 6, 2025 Great job Dave and thanks for the paint type/brand 👍 2 Quote

Hi, so I shot a bunch of necks and I always thought the stew mac (and other suppliers) neck amber looks really orangey.... so I hit it with a aged oil (a la musikraft) sealed it and then used a very light hit of stew mac amber and blended it with aged clear... so it wouldn't look wierdly orange. I'm pretty happy with the color. I'm takin a break and letting everything cure... but will hit it with more coats of Oxford clear. Oxford lacks hardeners and dries quickly... so it should chip and check easily. 2 Quote

This is my first time spraying an open pore body so maybe someone else can answer better than me… I didn’t go as heavy on the grain filler so I’ll probably end up spraying more than typical. sorry for the non answer! 1 Quote
ZR Posted July 7, 2025 Posted July 7, 2025 I love the custom blue fretless fingerboard. Super cool!! 😉🤣😁 I'm surprised how nice the wood looks. I might need to look into those kits. Nice job on the neck heel too. 1 1 Quote
