DEMENTED Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Man! I keep forgetting how great this band was. Jake E. Lee is awesome and Ray Gillen's vocals are near perfect. What a great band. A couple of the tunes are a little weak but overall the debut album rocked. I hear that Jake is gonna have a new album out..any truth to the rumour?
hardheartedbill Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 great recording, the dry tone and black denim shirt made a huge impression on me !
Guest JackButler Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Ditto! Definitely a fave! I hear that Jake's album will be all cover tunes.

ZR Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Agree! I'm going to listen to that one tonight. Are their other cd (s) as good as the first?
pesocaster Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 one of my top 5 fave guitar records... smokin' playing!
quik Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 The second LP, Voodoo Highway, is also great. Dusk is cool, too, though harder to find.
shred dog Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 got to love that raw in your face tone on the first badlands cd!! on my top ten list
Craig Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 All three are some of my favs, Dusk really grew on me!
Hamer95USA Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Hey Jake E. Lee fans, I've seen Jake Lee perform with Ozzy Osbourne and Badlands in northern California quite a few times many years ago. I have all the Badlands CD and the first Badlands CD is a great one. He went back and dialed up his tone minus all the crappy effects that Max Norman (producer of Ozzy's "Bark At The Moon" and "The Ultimate Sin".) put on his tracks in the past. Ray Gillen was a good match for Jake Lee's playing and it showed on this album. Since Ray Gillen expired from an AIDS related illness, Jake Lee toured briefly and disappeared with the exception of him recording on a number of tribute albums. This new album with the cover songs is a step forward for him since Ray's death. I would be happy to see him come out and tour behind this album. I think the fans would love to hear him play onstage again, myself included. Jake E. Lee is perhaps, one of the most underrated guitarists in heavy metal. Guitar George
MCChris Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 I believe it was AdmiralB who burned this one for me a few years ago. Jake's stuff with Ozzy never did anything for me (like Hamer95USA said, too many gott-damn effects) but the Badlands debut is the shit. And how about some props for Eric Singer? GREAT drummer. Hell, he even made post-makeup Kiss a legitimately tough rock'n'roll band on "Revenge." Eric Carr ... feh. Too busy, and not in a good Mitch Mitchell/Keith Moon sorta way.
silentman Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Great CD. I'm not a fan of the whole disc, but there are some cool tunes on there. Ray is a fantastic singer. I saw them live open for Great White and Tesla back in the day.
princeofdarkness56 Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Ditto on the drumming of Eric Singer. A rock solid player. You can see him every year on the road because he has been Alice Coopers drummer for about the past 8 years. He is something to see live.
Jeff R Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Me and the Centaura, the MicroCube and a six of tallboys spun the S/T and "Voodoo Highway" a couple nights ago deep into the evening. Those records kick absolute ass.
Armitage Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 I loved Jake with Ozzy, but didn't care less about his Badlands stuff. I'm glad he's doing something though.
Jack C Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Eric Carr ... feh. Too busy, and not in a good Mitch Mitchell/Keith Moon sorta way.Blasphemy.
MCChris Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Blasphemy. Are you serious? Carr was terrible. What's with hitting a rack tom every time he hit the damn snare? Terrible. "I Love It Loud" was his "When the Levee Breaks." Everything else? Crap.
Jack C Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Blasphemy. Are you serious? Carr was terrible. What's with hitting a rack tom every time he hit the damn snare? Terrible. "I Love It Loud" was his "When the Levee Breaks." Everything else? Crap.Oh yeah, I'm serious. Sure the "hitting a tom and snare together" thing is annoying (friggin Kenny Jones did that on his first single with the Who) but Carr rocked. When I was a teenager I used to watch my VHS copy of MTV's "Animalize Live" concert all the time becasue of Carr. He was really good.Plus, he's dead and what's the point in bashing someone who hasn't posted in years and isn't here to defend himself?
ZR Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 >>>Plus, he's dead and what's the point in bashing someone who hasn't posted in years and isn't here to defend himself?>>> LOL!!
Kilroy is all about... Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Personally, I love the JAKE E LEE BADLANDS era. Similiarly, I love the '90 RIVERDOGS when VIVIAN CAMPBELL played from his heart and not his $$. I even blew-off a U2 concert in april of '91 to watch jake lee at a place in santa clara, ca...that i forget. He smoked 'way too much' on stage, but that strat and marshall combo delivered huge tone and tunes. Just recieved a DVD of a BADLANDs gig from chicago '91 at the Metro. I'll be making several copies ONCE I find someone with the necessary dub'n equipment. As for jake's ozzy work, I rarely listen to ozzy but for the randy rhoads era...weird..I know. Favorite 'no-where-hair' bands from the late '80s into the 90s: 1) the riverdogs (rob lamonthe's singing and songwriting are the tops!) 2) badlands 3) mccauley/schenker 4) king's x (they're still around, but it's been a couple of years since the last attended gig in l.a.'03). I've been tolded that jake is a farmer, working the land in Idaho, and, now, there's a new album. Great!! Dusk is my favorite, because I found it in Japan in '01 and listened to it everyday during my 30-day active duty stint following 9/11/01 (I was the only passenger picked up at reno-tahoe on the 14th of september as my navy picked me up in route to japan for 30 days of protecting THEIR borders...go figure that one? kilroy is attempting to get that sykes dvd dub'd for jackbutler and j.hughes, so be patient.

I'll check and see if it has DVD burning capabilities.
Craig Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Kilroy - don't forget me on the Sykes. I agree on Dusk, it just kept growing on me, and the heavier songs to me are so RAW in thier tone that it's scary. I happen to have the Riverdogs CD too, you should also check out Shadow King, a band he was in with Lou Grahm of Foriegner. My only regret is not stealing the acoustic album from my college radio station when I had the chance.
shred dog Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 dusk is a great cd . and the tone and playing on the RIVERDOGS cd is smokin viv was pulling out all the stops on that disc!!!!!!!!!! and rob writes great tunes and has a cool voice . shadow kings is also a cool cd viv has a killer crunch tone on that disc!! if only he didn't join def lep !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kilroy is all about... Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 craig- got ya' on the sykes dvd list. i have both shadowking, which i thought was good, but not riverdogs brilliant. I have the acoustic riverdogs cd and a lot of lamonthe's solo cds stuff, which is not as compelling as the riverdogs stuff. also, have the riverdogs germany only release with nick brohy? on guitar instead of bass. apparently, the riverdogs (viv, rob, and nick) get together for one week a year in l.a. for some song writing and demos. craig is your email: mbhw@optonline.net? if so then you're on the sykes list; should i start dubb'n the riverdogs stuff as well. kilroy posts.
