Steve Haynie Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 A seasonal song, but the sentiment remains year round...Please, Daddy (Don't Get Drunk This Christmas)The first time I heard this song it was sung by John Denver.

El Kabong Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 When I was a senior in high school, I was a huge fan of a local group when I lived near Vancouver, called 'The Grapes of Wrath'. They had some regional success with a song called, 'Piece of Mind'. One of the strongest lines in this Byrds and Simon and Garfunkel influenced song went:My father couldn't bother,To do the kind of work the job required,So instead of trying he retired,....I would hope that when we get older we may findA piece of mind. One day, I was helping a friend move into a funky, broken down tennament and a guy in his late 50's said, 'Oh, you're wearing my son's shirt'. I asked if his son had the same G.o.W. t-shirt. He replied, 'No, my son's Kevin Kane',(singer/ song writer). The lyrics all came together in an instant, when I could never make any sense out of Duran Duran...
mudshark Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 Not a song, but I've loved this poem by Theodor Roethke for a long long time:My Papa's WaltzThe whiskey on your breathCould make a small boy dizzy; But I hung on like death:Such waltzing was not easy.We romped until the pansSlid from the kitchen shelf; My mother's countenanceCould not unfrown itself. The hand that held my wristWas battered on one knuckle; At every step you missedMy right ear scraped a buckle. You beat time on my headWith a palm caked hard by dirt,Then waltzed me off to bedStill clinging to your shirt.
Brooks Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 Born into a scene of averice and greed, dominance and persecution. My mother was a queen, my dad I've never seen, I was never meant to be.And now I spend my time looking all around,For a man that's nowhere to be found.Until I find him I'm never gonna stop searching,I'm gonna find my old man, gonna travel around.'Cause I'm a wrathchildSay it doesn't matter ain't nothin' gonna alter the course of my destination.I know I've got to find some serious piece of mind, or I know I'll go crazy. But now I spend my time looking all around,For a man thats nowhere to be found.Until I find him I'm never gonna stop searching,I'm gonna find my old man, gonna travel around.
