Willie G. Moseley Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 "Prunetwang": Present home of the Electric Prunes"Generic Record Label": It was plain, black-and-whiteI'll go ahead and allude to Stiff's slogan before someone else does...
Steve Haynie Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Death Records seemed to have a lot of acts that would last forever.
sonic1974 Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Death Records seemed to have a lot of acts that would last forever.God that was a weird movie! Couldn't figure out if I was supposed to be laughing or not while watching.rob
unfun 75 Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 I thought the Swan Song logo was one of the cooler ones, ever.
cmatthes Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Mine are:Swan SongAppleCasablancaAny "Artist Enhanced" one, like Macca/Wings, KISS, etc. used to do.I always thought the IRS labels were cool, but minimalist.TAANG! Records had a cool one too...The Atlantic, Capitol and original White or Orange Epic labels were BORING. Epic did dress things up in the late '70s/early '80s with the midnight sky and silver logo, but even that was no great shakes.
Guest pirateflynn Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Death Records seemed to have a lot of acts that would last forever.Good choice, Steve. One of my favorites!Oh course ...... Apple all the way!
blackfbiv Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 "Amphetamine Reptile" jumps tp mind... we opened for a couple of their acts back in the early 90's... can't remember who 'xactly but...For some goofy reason when I fantasized about being on a label it was always 'Atlantic'.
Willie G. Moseley Posted February 7, 2008 Author Posted February 7, 2008 Trivia buffs take note: IIRC all of the Apple labels on 12" licorice pizza showed a GREEN apple, but when LET IT BE, the last Beatles album, was released, the apple was RED...the implication being that the entity had "ripened", and was thereby over and done with; i.e., terminado/kaput/gerschfinkto. Anybody got LET IT BE to check it out (wonder if it's the same way on CD)? Just a bit of intrigue that I've been wondering about for decades...
seeker Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Emergency Broadcast SystemCapitol - the original Beatles pressings with that rainbow/prism label edge. Could watch that go round and round and round and . . .
bamboohead Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 Barking Pumpkin. Ok,I'm a Zappa fan. But what a great name.
Willie G. Moseley Posted February 7, 2008 Author Posted February 7, 2008 Wasn't the Barking Pumpkin logo a jack-o-lantern saying "Woof!", frightening a cat? That label's motto was "World's Finest Optional Entertainment", and as may have been noted here on a few occasions, my personal credo is that all entertainment is optional, and I'll acknowledge that the B.P. slogan got me to thinking about such...maybe Zappa would have approved of such rumination.
BubbaVO Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 One of the reasons I've missed records is the artwork/photos in a size you can appreciate. My dad bought my brother and me our first album - Rolling Stones Greatest Hits "High Tide and Green Grass". The guys were standing in a forest glen on the back cover. On the front they were on some sort of castle/rocky surface. Inside were pics of the boys in the studio - I remember thinking about what they were like when I'd listen to Satisfaction , 19th Nervous Breakdown, etc.Unless you have a magnifying glass, the experience opening up a cd isn't the same.

Anybody got LET IT BE to check it out (wonder if it's the same way on CD)? Just a bit of intrigue that I've been wondering about for decades...The apple on my Let It Be album is indeed red. The apple on Abby Road is green, but the beatles only had 2 or 3 releases on Apple. I'm not sure if the White album was Apple or Parlophone/Capitol.ArnieZ
Bloozguy Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 The White Album is on Parlophone.+1 on the Barking Pumpkin...and the "scaring the cat" artwork. My favorite release on BP was the three-album set "Shut Up And Play Your Guitar; Shut Up And Play Your Guitar Some More; and Return Of The Son Of Shut Up And Play Your Guitar."For midwest folks, Soma Records was a biggie...plain yellow label but released "Liar, Liar" by the Castaways, "Turn On Your Love Light" by the High Spirits, etc. Didn't figure out until years later that "Soma" is "Amos" spelled backwards...Amos Heilicher, a big name local producer/manager/agent.
jwhitcomb3 Posted February 7, 2008 Posted February 7, 2008 I liked "Fifty Skidillion Watts", that filled up the record spine with a 5 followed by about 100 zeros.-Jonathan
