atquinn Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 Polara has a post about an eBay brush with "greatness" involving Asia, which made me think of how I sold a Vintage Rails pickup to "the" Mike Varney (of Shrapnel records fame/infamy depending on your view). Anybody have any similar stories involving eBay (buying or selling)?-Austin

kenjones Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 I bought a pair of Tannoy reference monitors from Ed Mann (ex-Zappa percussionist). I'm a HUGE Zappa fan, so of course I had to bug him by sending him a few emails.Oh yeah - and I had to send him a copy of my band's CD with our version of "Broken Hearts are for Assholes"!

serial Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 I bought Kip Winger's two original prototype Impact basses from the old ad after emailing him off of eBay when the pearl/grey one didn't sell at $1400. Actually, his tech listed them, but he emailed me in response to my inquiry. Kind of freaked me out a bit a few days later when he called (my # was on my email signature at the time). Really nice guy.

bigjel Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 I lent my Pod to Bruce Foxton from The Jam. Not sure how many of you Yanks know about them - they toured in the US with Blue Oyster Cult among others - but they were huge in the UK in the late 70s/early 80s
kenjones Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 I lent my Pod to Bruce Foxton from The Jam. Not sure how many of you Yanks know about them - they toured in the US with Blue Oyster Cult among others - but they were huge in the UK in the late 70s/early 80s I love The Jam.I tried to buy a live Rockpalast DVD with The Jam from a guy in Europe on eBay. I sent him my money but never got my DVD. I really wanted to see that show too!
JohnnyB Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 I used to frequent a vintage guitar store in downtown Seattle, where Chris Belew of Presidents of the United States of America would dump his endorser guitars when he no longer needed them. His Epiphones were ringers.First one I had was an LP Special with nickel hardware (including the good Grovers), Gibson P-90s, one-piece mahogany body, and the slickest setup and and feel I have EVER experienced with a guitar. Sold that one to a friend who'd bird-dogged it first, knowing he'd enjoy it more than I did. Serial number was CS005 (as in Custom Shop).Second one was an Epiphone Casino, red, with orange label inside, Nashville-made. Played like a dream. But even after I put Fralins in it (the original metal-covered P90s were Samsung), the Newport still smoked it so I sold that one as well.I've never had a transaction with him, but I met Andy Marshall at, of all things, a birthday party for pre-schoolers. The guy throwing the party was Dean Butcher, the founder/owner of Symetrix Audio, maker of recording studio equipment, so he and Andy were buds.
Nuclear Wessel Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 my Atari computer to Alan Holdsworth... So he's still using the Atari! Wow! I heard a number of years ago that he used one. I still have mine. I composed a bunch of songs on it over the years so I wasn't about to switch to another platform real quickly. In fact, the sequencing software I use on it still has advantages over MIDI sequencing software that's out for PC's today. But in '03 I did finally get a PC and Cubase SX.
atquinn Posted July 19, 2005 Author Posted July 19, 2005 Cool stories! I guess it's a small world as far as music is concerned. Keep 'em coming.-Austin
DaveL Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 No, but my friend had listed some vintagetype amps in our local trader type paper inMass. he was contacted by Joe Perry's tech who came out to look at the amps and bought acouple. He then reported back and got a call by the man himself. He has a message on his machine that said "hi this is Joe, I was calling on the..." I was suprised that he didn't refer to himself as "Mr Joe f$#ing Perry!!". he came by, didn't haggle and had his buddy pick them up.
bobsessed Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 I was at a guitar store in Atlanta in 1981, having my '80 Special's bridge adjusted, when Pat Travers showed up to give a clinic. He actually played my guitar and snatched a nice 4" leather strap off the wall to dangle it from. When it was all over Pat told me to keep the strap. I still have the guitar and strap...wish I'd got him to sign it! -Bob-
