Feynman Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Yeah - I know. Hamer Fan Club and all, but allow me this... I'm sure it's just a product of my age and my questionable tastes in music, but I still get a thrill at the sight of sharkfin inlays and ebony. When it came to fire-breathing metal pulsing madness, little lit my fuse like a dangerous/crazy looking Jackson ripping through an oversized Marshall stack. Jacksons were exotic unobtainium, a tool for the elite groups having way more fun than I was. It doesn't seem that long ago when Soloists ruled the arenas. I'm guess I'm getting old. Anyone else still dig Jacksons? I love the Soloist, Kelly, Rhoads, King V, and more. Care to add a graphic of a demon about to devour a barely clad women chained to a cliff? Even better. Throw in some pentagrams while we're at it. I'll take a platinum pink one as well, and a snakeskin... Walk on stage with one of these - well, you better not suck. I miss you, Eighties.
Guest JackButler Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 GREAT guitars.. I've owned a BUNCH of them.. best thing about them is the fretwork is flawless.
edgar_allan_poe Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 The Soloist is a horribly underrated guitar. It really isn't a shred only axe, it is amazingly versatile.I have had the pleasure of owning some amazing guitars and an Archtop Soloist and a PC-1 are part of a very select group that I regret selling.
Jeff R Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Had my share of Jacksons (and San Dimas-made Charvels) over the years. Coupla Soloists, a Rhoads and a slew of bolt-on stuff. Love them and will probably add another to the stable very soon ... Here's why -- The 30-piece 30th Anniversary "First Five" Rhoads guitar run unveiled at NAMM recently. One is a repro of Vinnie Vincent's gold sparkle Rhoads he played with Kiss ... this has been my dream Jackson guitar for as long as I can remember. The original's oddball features -- Inverted sharks on ROSEWOOD fingerboard, handwritten gold logo, non-fine-tuning Floyd, three-plank maple neck-through construction, unusual control layout and strap pin placement, among other things. Here's a reissue at NAMM -- the only difference I see is a fine-tuning Floyd (which I would have done to the actual original if I somehow found it LOL Tell me THAT won't kick absolute ass with a baby blue tuxedo jacket LOL

jisham Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 That would kick absolute ass with a baby blue tuxedo jacket.Indeed.I really wish I could figure out a way to get along with Floyds.
shredmeister Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 I have some experience with Jacksons. Last one is a Custom Shop Reverse Body Style Demon - absolutely one of the most killer guitars I have ever seen.
jisham Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 OOOHHHHH@!@@@@ Love that Charvel quilt top. I've been seriously eyeing the new Charvel Production Series.

Oh HELL yeah, another fan of the 80's! Thank you for reminding me that I'm not alone out here! I have owned numerous Jacksons over the years- couldn't afford the really good stuff until the last 10 years, had to settle for the (then) cheaper Japanese made stuff. Had a black Model 3, a purple Kelly Pro Standard, a faux stone-finish Randy Rhoads Pro Standard, a BEE-U-TEE-FULL San Dimas Dinky Strat in yellow desert crackle (MY god, why did I trade that for a Washburn N4???) and now I'm down to a black Charvel Star- OFR SD JB/'59, a 90's black Kelly Pro Standard that I've pimped out- OFR, reverse headstock replacement neck w/sharkies, Seymour Duncan Dimebucker bridge, a Bill Lawrence L500 in the neck and Dimarzio K500 pot. Just pimped out a Randy Rhoads Ex not too long ago- I stripped it, gutted it and painted it. Then I added an OFR, Seymour Duncan Blackouts (active), swapped the blade style 3 pos. selector for a toggle 3 way switch, and Schaller strap locks. Here's the body after I painted it. http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk148/v...50/DSCF0756.jpg
DaveL Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 Not so much Jacksons, but I recently entered the world ofSan Dimas Charvels... That stuff is really interesting. The the whole parts thing with guys building their own guitars is pretty to cool watch... I have a star body being painted in blue metal flake by Stike as we speak, will have pics in a couple days...

I'd save a bunch if/when I purchased a new or custom ax.
Thundersteel Posted February 2, 2010 Posted February 2, 2010 The local music store has one of these in Natural Flame Maple-I'm very tempted! [sL2HT Soloist with Fixed Bridge]
Jorge Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I love the Soloist. They should have a version with "normal" (floating, but non-Floyd) bridge.
Armitage Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I've had lots of Jacksons, and still have two Soloists "just because"... but I've never heard a good one. Way too much paint IMHO. Way too thick.
bubs_42 Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I never have bought a Jackson, just Charvels. I've owned a Sunburst 750XL, White Model 5FX , Blue Model 5FX, White Model 1, White Model 3, A modified model 2 with a Hand Painted Dragon on the front. I want to say there was one or two more but can't remember. The Neck through model 5's and 6's along with the 650's and 750's were from the Japan Custom Shop. Great guitar and I used to get them on ebay for less than $175 bucks.
atquinn Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I've had a few Soloists and they were all pretty good, but I found the control layout extremely annoying on all of them. - Austin

I had a San Dimas-era Rhoads Custom for a while, which I wanted and saved for forever (I was in high school), and ended up scoring a really good deal on, but I could never really get that guitar sounding like I was happy with. I sold it to a friend of mine who still has it and enjoys it as far as I know. That guitar still had some of the most character of any guitar I've ever owned though.
velorush Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Never had a Jackson, but this was my number one starting around 1986. I bought it new and loaded the EMGs (SA/SA/85) with the mid boost in place of the tone control. Had the Floyd been non-floating (or if something like a tremol-no had been invented), I'd probably still have the guitar (sorry about the plastic camera photo quality - how was I to know Algore would invent the Internet and I'd be posting these online twenty years later?) The compound radius neck was spectacular - got me thinking I'd like to try one of the new So Cals...
edgar_allan_poe Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Here is the Soloist Archtop I mentioned earlier. I was an amazing guitar in every respect. Fit and finish were impeccable and it was an amazingly versatile instrument.
Jeff R Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Jeff I've read that the guitar Vinnie had was actually slated to be for Randy Rhoads, hence the stuff like the real early, handwritten logo, but they didn't have it finished before he passed away, and Vinnie was able to buy it when they completed it. Yep, heard that story, never confirmed on the record by Grover to my knowledge but I'm inclined to believe it by comparing the timelines of Randy's tenure with Jackson guitars, his death and Vinnie's appearance with a Rhoads. Another 2010 NAMM "first five" guitar is a black Rhoads with a non-locking strat trem that was built for Randy but wasn't delivered before his death. The original one had a neck tilt alignment issue in regard to the bridge, and Grover shipped it off the "blank" to a case company to use as a template for case production. When he got the blank back, it sat in storage for years and years unfinished. A big Jackson collector who knew Grover eventually got the blank, got the alignment issue fixed or overcome, and had the guitar finished by the factory. Another Jackson enthusiast has it now. Here's the reissue ...
mc2 Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Jackson TBird matched pair topped from same piece of flame maple. Originally made for Brian Wheat of Tesla with Gibson '60s headstocks to piss off the boys in Nashville. Sort of related to this topic...the only Hamer ever done with Jackson sharkfin inlays. Unfortunately, still missing since the late '90s.
Guest JackButler Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Don't forget about the one that was supposed to be part of the lot for Randy that was on display at NAMM and Grover's wife accidently sold to someone right out of the display.. that guitar resurfaced for sale maybe two years ago or so? The guy had even posted video of him playing the guitar and iirc there was a huge thread that ran on the JCF about that guitar.. can't remember if he actually sold it or knee jerked and pulled it/decided to keep it.
Ethan Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Was that the guy that looked like Donal Louge? Charging ridiculous amounts of money for copies of a RR lesson transcript or something? I can't remember...Jeff that Rhoads is awesome too, I remember reading a seminar with Randy in Guitar World or something, and he said that apparently he had this guy set up his tremolos on his polka dot V and his Jackson V, and that afterward they stayed in tune so well that he didn't need a Floyd Rose...I guess that is why that one has the Fender-style bridge on it.

You mean dissun? IIRC, the guy said it's been his personal favorite and wasn't for sale, but he wasn't ruling out sale in the future for mega bucks.
