wyldbil Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 OK, all the jokes are obvious about the fat guy being hungry, yada yada yada...With THAT out of the way...Been rehearsing a lot lately for the first ever wyldbil show tomorrow night. (FINALLY.)The other day I noticed that I played better, tighter and more precisely when I showed up to practice with a rumbling, hungry stomach. Sang and remembered lyrics better, as well. So, I repeated the pattern the last couple of rehearsals and sure enough, it's true. At least for me it is.Has anyone else experienced this or similar? One thing for sure- I won't be having pizza before playing tomorrow night!
Nuclear Wessel Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Hmm. Interesting. I've read that after eating, a lot of blood heads to your stomach area, so maybe there's less available for the brain? I guess I wouldn't play real well if I was sleepy after eating a real big meal. I have noticed I DON'T concentrate on my playing and singing real well if I have to take a leak real badly. Happened once, and now I make sure to let the big guy out for some air between sets when we play out.
Jack C Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Has anyone else noticed that if you're playing under hot lights and you sweat a bunch during the set, you don't have to pee - even if you drink a LOT of beer? I always thought that was pretty cool.
BillW Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Has anyone else noticed that if you're playing under hot lights and you sweat a bunch during the set, you don't have to pee - even if you drink a LOT of beer? I always thought that was pretty cool. Yep - I rarely if ever have to pee when I play - and I drink alot. Either diet coke or beer, either way it never matters. Of course, I sweat like a stuck pig ....especially under lights
pesocaster Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Been a rule for me for 15+ years no food for 4 hours before gig time..... Always play hungry!
lonote049 Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 I'm diabetic so I have to eat before I play. I discovered that I was a diabetic one St. Patrick's Day when I had 2 gigs and had to speed from one to the other. I didn't have a chance to eat and collapsed on stage; the EMT's gave me glucose intravenously and I finished the gig...but I eat now.I also drink a lot of fluids and seldom piss during a gig and I also sweat like crazy.
Guest galejt Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 We spend upwards of 10 hours in the sun when climbing, drinking the whole time. Despite the opportunity to let loose on those beneath us, we manage to not pee until we get down, go to the Resturant and drink a six pack. You must sweat it out.
elduave Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Don't eat the pizza. I do hear that dairy, especially cheese is no good before singing. I hardly ever eat before I play but that's because it's easier to suck it in. I never have to pee while playing.Knock 'em dead Wyld!
shankyboy Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 While most of us are not athletic specimins, a gig can easily be compared to an athletic performance. We burn a lot of calories and typically sweat quite a bit. I treat gigs just like I treated wrestling matches in highschool & college. (except for the beer, of course) I never eat less than 3 or 4 hours before a gig and I make sure that the food I do put in my system is good energy food, such as pasta and other carbs. I did a 4th of July gig once where we played a 1 hour set and then they had some intermission activities for about an hour and the we came back out to play another 1 hour set. The people that hired us had prepared a huge amount of food for the band and we chowed down during our break. Problem was that when we came back for the 2nd set, it took us 30 minutes to get our groove back because we were all so sluggush from all of the food. I'll never make that mistake again.
stobro Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 I've always been a fan of the traditional 3AM post-gig gas station cheeseburger!-Brandon

tafkathundernotes Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 Seems like there would be more room for the diaphragm to expand into the abdomen without a belly full of food. I usually drink a lot of water on gig/practice days to keep the pipes loose.
HSB0531 Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 Did a gig last Sat. outdoors in the extreme heat. Two 1 hour sets.Sweat like crazy. Ate a minimal amount of food, but drank lots of Coke.Lots of fluids and saving the big meal 'till after the gig works for me.
hamerhead Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 Alright Bil!! Go get 'em, big guy! We did our first show last night (MY first gig in quite a few years). I get all nervous as hell beforehand and usually don't eat most of the day - maybe some lunch. Hopefully we'll be playing enough for me to lose 20lbs. LOL!
bobbymack Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 I've always been a fan of the traditional 3AM post-gig gas station cheeseburger!-Brandon +1 Waffle House, 3am...there's really nothing like it.
BCR Greg Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 We load in at 6 or so and then go eat at a local Chinese Buffet. We then go back and set up, so we are hungry by stage time.
m chops Posted August 27, 2005 Posted August 27, 2005 I don't know that I thought about in terms of hours, but I prefer not to eat before I play. I drink a lot of water and don't eat between sets. But I picked up a habit from nightwolf: I gotta have a sub after the gig. No Wawa in Cleveland, so I settle for a Subway.
Brooks Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 bil, i see you pioneering a new diet;the gig diet! fill up the booking schedule, weigh in and keep records. report back.i usually eat light and drink light beer, as i realized that my fave microbrews were too strong and i get too tipsy to cleanly execute my "guitarist intimidation licks" (trademark brooks 2001). esp w/ acoustic strings.
pesocaster Posted August 28, 2005 Posted August 28, 2005 I've always been a fan of the traditional 3AM post-gig gas station cheeseburger!-Brandon +1 Waffle House, 3am...there's really nothing like it. Any all-night "greasy spoon" (Denny's is a LAST resort)..... at 3:00AM after a gig... Breakfast is a must! Pete's Kitchen in Denver was a post gig staple when I lived there...
Guest JackButler Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 now THAT my friends is classics and funny...I don't care who you are!...LOL!
mattb Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 I agree. On rehearsal nights I drive from work to home (1 hour) grab my guit then off to the studio (30 minutes). No time to eat. I play better. I usually have a decent lunch and drink some beer while im playing. I completely agree. From one fat dude to another.
Hamer95USA Posted August 29, 2005 Posted August 29, 2005 Hey guys, I usually eat a light meal before I get to a gig. I don't want to spend money on greasy bar food. I make sure to stay hydrated with water and use my break time efficiently. If I had a few beers and I'm hungry, I do like having an early morning breakfast at Heidi's Pies in San Mateo(if I'm in the neighborhood) or a local Denny's since they're open 24 hours. Guitar George
Cheap Chick Posted August 30, 2005 Posted August 30, 2005 OK.. i thought about this thread - the last 2 rehearsals i didn't have dinner beforehand and i played better for sure! I played with more conviction - more oomph! is that possible? i have also had gigs where i didn't eat before and spaced out on stage and played like crap.. hmmmm. interesting though!
