Laura Press Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Hey guys & Gals, One of my bandmates played my dragon skin Chap. He amazingly turned into a Guitar GOD on the spot! He was EddieVanJeffBeck soring and divebombing. He couldn't put it down. It sounded awesome. He went crazy wild about it, and wants to buy it. I have already been successful at converting many other guitarists into Hamer owner/players, but this one was just too easy. Only problem is he wants it and I don't know what it's worth these days. It has a Jim O'Connor 1988 signature on it. Some buckle rash on the back. I got some not too great pics, but here goes.
Feynman Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I'm going to guess that just posting that pic gets you flooded with email... Very cool finish. I'm guessing it's worth a decent sum of money, but I have no idea what that would be.
DarrenD Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 All depends. Put it on ebay for a low reserve and see what it goes for. Wasn't this one on ebay before for around $1200 with no action?I would say $800-$1000 to the right person, little more if it had boomers. The chaps are just as good as its brother, the cali - but the market isn't as favorable.I see a sustainiac, but I don't see the mini toggles. Does it work?On a side note, I've never seen this color snakeskin before painted by O'Connor, so maybe the discriminating Connor fan will enjoy this one. I love the O'Connor paintings. I'm waiting for a faux marble w/sustainiac to pop up. Cool guitar.

I once offered it to an HFC'er looking for something unique, but this wasn't unique enough for him. I really wasn't looking to sell it. I hardly ever play it and keep it mainly 'cause it's so friggin' kewl and it was a present from Jon. Now my band mate loves it. He wants to buy it but I don't know what would be a fair price for both of us.BTW, it doesn't have mini toggles and I didn't change the p/u's. It is just as it was when Jon found it for me for a Christmas present a few years back.

It is just as it was when Jon found it for me for a Christmas present a few years back.It doesn't have a sustainiac; looks like a Seymour Duncan Rail pickup of some sort in the neck. The factory sustainiac in Chappies had two mini-toggles (on/off and reg/octave harmonic). ex Hamer Chap w/sustainiac
veatch Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Wow. I feel sorta funny and tingly at the moment...
DarrenD Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Duhhhh I can't believe I missed the Duncan rail pickup and mistaken it as a sustainiac!
GusS Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 before reading DarrenD's reply I was also gonna say $800-$1000. It's about a $500 guitar w/ a solid finish.

It's about a $500 guitar w/ a solid finish. Thanks for the feedback GusS.I honestly don't know the right price, but that sounds kind of low. I have seen non sustainiac Chaps for more than that without the Jim O'Connor paint job. But I do appreciate the feedback from all you guys. Anyone else have any ideas?
GusS Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 you probably saw chaparral customs w/ ebony and boomerang inlays.here's a nice non-custom for sale:http://www.hamerfanclub.com/forums/index.p...mp;hl=chaparral
cspot Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Way cool guitar...Keep it. I think you'd really regret selling it. Especially with the gift story. My $.02 BTW Fer some reason tho I'm seeing a giraffe finish????
Laura Press Posted January 18, 2011 Author Posted January 18, 2011 I thought I remembered a couple from here and ebay. Couldn't find any in completed items on ebay, but found this one here. http://www.hamerfanclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=46750And I see there were no takers. So maybe your estimate is more correct than I realized GusS.As far as the present thing goes, Jon is o.k. with me selling it to this guy. He is my band mate and Jon's friend. And I very rarely even take it out of the case. But it was a Christmas present and is still way cool regardless of how often I use it. Maybe I'll see if he likes my '81 Special with the EMG's instead.BTW, I can see the giraffe thing too.All other $0.02 welcome.

I actually already did send him that link. Maybe he can buy the '81 Special w/ the EMG's too!
Laura Press Posted January 18, 2011 Author Posted January 18, 2011 Thats a sweet Chappy man.Thanks. But what's the right price IF I sell it?
The Shark Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Laura:You have to understand that "the price" is very subjective. It sounds as if your best bet is to "auction" it. I'd choose eBay and pay the money for a reserve that meets your lowest expectation. Those that don't know what their guitar is worth are best protected by a reserve auction. If it doesn't sell after a couple auction cycles, you'll know those expectations are too high. The Shark.

I'm trying to decide whether or not to sell it to a band mate who is also a friend. I'm not sure I want to sell it at all. And I'm not sure a fair price to sell it to this one particular guy - if I sell it at all. I'm torn.I just wanted to bounce it off the HFC for a guesstimate of a fair price to a friend. Meanwhile, we are in the studio tomorrow and Jon wants to distract him from the Chappy with the Special.
DarrenD Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Regular rosewood fretboard chaps go around the $500 range. A guitar center actually has a nice condition chap with a ugly finish for $400 that hasn't moved in almost a year. Since yours is an O'Connor finish, I am going with my original estimate of $800-1000 to the right buyer, most likely on a large market (ebay). You might be able to fetch more if you are willing to ship overseas. There is a huge difference between rosewood fretboard hamers (when relating to chaparrals and californians) and ebony/boomer fretboards. Having the ebony/boomer combo boosts prices on most Hamers, but californians more than chaparrals. There was a very unique single-humbucker californian standard (rosewood) with a Jim O'Connor red snakeskin graphic. The reserve wasn't met and the price was around $875. The EXACT same californian with an ebony/boomer combo would have doubled that price easily.....just because of the ebony/boomer combo (yes, crazy isn't it?). Californians are more sought after, and considering the cali snakeskin didn't even fetch over $900, I cannot see this chaparral fetching more than that. A plain chaparral with an ebony/boomer combo usually fetches around $900-$1100 on ebay. Last one went for 1k I think. The Hamer market is very skewed and picky. It is easy to get confused with the models and their values.
The Shark Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 So, the premise is the market doesn't matter and it's a friend? Just give it to him. Any cash is only subjective.
cmatthes Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Laura:That's a very cool guitar, and that finish is terribly rare.I'd ballpark it at between $800 - $1,000 (like posted above), maybe a hair more, depending on condition and originality. I would consider that a fair price if I were buying, but probably wouldn't sell one like that for less than $900 myself unless it was to a friend (like you're considering). If it had boomers, it would definitely go higher.
zenmindbeginner Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 The guitar is a gift from someone special. Just because your guitar player wants it does not mean that he should have it. The guitar player most likely turned up his nose at Hamer guitars in the 80's & 90's. Lo and behold he gets to play one, he loves it and must have it. Where the hell was he when Hamer was still around? There is nothing that pisses me off like when you show off your gear to a friend and they immediately ask if it's for sale. Taking $900 for that one of a kind guitar that was a gift from a loved one is almost an insult. Tell him to keep his paws off of your axe and to get in a time machine and become a Hamer fan. Or direct him to an eBay auction where he can buy a Chaparral that doesn't have a one of a kind finish and is without sentimental value.
