I thinking of getting a mulitple guitar stand. My music area now has a couch/tv and game room in the nearby space. Right now I just have two guitar stands that I alternate a guitar and bass and pull from the cases occaisionlly. I'd like to have moreI have three electrics and 2 bass and 1 Acoustic. I'd like to get a 5 guitar stand or build one. Does anyone have one of the below options? Anyone ever build there own?

I'm quite adept at woodworking so I'm thinking I would prefer to build my own but I wonder if there are any design flaws I should avoid.

Any ideas, advice or things to avoid?

I have one of these and several of the 7-place versions. They seem to be pretty good but the bottom foam will compress if you leave guitars on there for a long time. I just take the guitars off and rotate the foam tubes periodically.

I had one like that and was always afraid that if - for whatever reason - it tipped over, there's some awfully expensive lumber on the floor. I'm pretty paranoid, so I gave it away.

I don't know what the answer is, but if you put 'guitar multistand' in Google images, you'll get quite a few good ideas. Maybe some more stable........

I have that one and have used it for years now. It's handy in the studio and a real space-saver on a crowded stage. I don't leave stuff on there for extended periods of time and take a little extra care with it while it's in transit and it's in excellent shape. Once you put a guitar or two on it it's very stable. I do make a point of having its back to something solid, though, just in case, and I've never had a mishap. It also comes in handy as a rack/stand when I'm cleaning multiple rifles. :D

I have one of the first ones. Since I got it it's been to easily 100+ gigs and still works great, and I really don't take much care getting it in and out of the car or club. I don't use it at home except to take a "family" pic every once in a while.

I used a Warwick 3 guitar Rokstand for years as using only floyd'd guitars you need a backup or two close at hand. Again, no issues, stable and handy and i doub't i'll ever bother selling it even though i stopped playing out in 2007, it's just that handy.

By design, I'd worry about banging the guitar bodies together.

Yea, me too.

That is why I'm thinking of building my own to add seperators in the bottom and top.

I've had one of these for several years and as stated before, once you get a few guitars on there it is very stable. I move the guitars around every week or two, if they don't get moved from playing just so the foam doesn't get compressed from sitting in the same spot for extended periods of time. For home use I don't think you could go wrong.

If this isn't intended to be portable, you could probably build something similar to the lower row of this pretty easily. Hangers could be easily built into the design, but there are also enough different styles on the market that you could hang them at an angle (as pictured) or completely sideways like your photo.

Since it's a hanging only design, you could run a couple 2x2's between the bottom supports and build some sort of slat system to prevent your guitars from looking like this:

So, is it better to hang from the neck or rest on the body?

We're talking about a Prototype II, import Standard, 83 Cruise, Fender Bass, and an acoustic that I want on this stand.

edited to add. Thanks for the ideas and advice so far.

Hey - maybe I got a crappy one. :D Didn't like it, though. :D

I prefer them to rest on the body, but again, I'm paranoid. Something about them hanging just doesn't seem right to me (but there are 6 hanging as we speak. Go figure).

As far as banging bodies together, I swore I saw one with adjustable carpeted dividers, so all guitars were sitting in a rack with 'walls' in between them (If it doesn't exist, I call copyright!!). That'd be the way I'd go.

The problem with owning a whole wack of guitars, is where to put them... I was looking at stands like this a few years back, and it quickly makes your guitars look like "old stock" instead of kind'a special. It's real easy to make half a dozen guitars look like half a million bucks with pot lights and stuff, but 70-100 tend to look... unspecial... (I can' think of a better word).

Separate stands aren't any better...

Wow, those photos are older then I thought...

Of course you can just toss them on the floor like this pic from 89...

Have to avoid the floor storage method because of this cute girl...

I had a 5 guitar unit but usually only kept 3 on it due to body to bridge conflicts. This is worse with Floyds. Separators would be a darn fine idea.

I'd like to see the completed project.

Love this pic! I see Ace, Gene, and Paul in there. It reminds me of my own Malcolm and Angus version.

And I agree that you have so many guitars that some don't look special :D so I'll PM you my address and you can all of those to me. :D

Well, I've started the project today. Got a lot done. Still have some shaping, staining, and finishing up to do. Trying to decide what to use for protection. Felt, carpet or some type of rubber. Haven't decided.

Decided to make a mod of standard stands like this to accomodate my XT standard. So far it works pretty well. I don't know that I would want to stick a USA Standard on it though.

Pics of the current stage of completion...

I made my own like you are doing. The problem I found with "off the shelf stands" is that none (with a back) are deep enough or tall enough to hold a multiple Standards without twisting them around and knocking them together to get them in and out. I covered mine with speaker box (or trunk lining) material. Got it Here: http://www.rtboxes.com/fabric-speaker-box-carpet/

I have the carpeted spacers in the bottom of the stand which helps prevent them from twisting into eachother they are maybe 2" wide and 2" high, only on the bottom, not like walls as Armitage suggested, that sounds better and cooler than what I did.

I will try to post pics if I ever figure out how (I have read how to, it just does not work for me)

Edit for here we go trying to post pics

I like that enclosed box stand for the standards.

Here is mine finished and loaded with my standard modification.

Pretty happy with the result.

It looks great!

I don't recall the specifics, but do double check that the material you used for padding won't react with the guitars' finishes.

I had some kind of a hang-by-the-neck stand for a few years and never noticed that it was eating away the corners of the headstock finish on one of my guitars.

It's a well-loved player anyway and I generally don't fret from about 1" behind the nut, but it's still a shame and I'd hate to see it happen unexpectedly to anyone else's guitars.
