'82 Special Basket Case...

So, I find myself with an '82 Checkerboard-logo Special that I purchased from eBay a few years back. The shipping, as I recall, cost more than the actual guitar, but I took a chance because the pic on the auction looked like the original pickups were intact. It was missing the bridge and looked to be in really deplorable condition. I received the guitar and it had an unmistakable funk about it, was beat to death and was basically just junk.

The guitar had been routed (badly) for a Kahler Pro, and many of the screws attaching the hardware had been replaced with things like sheetrock screws.

But...The guitar had no breaks and the pickups were undamaged and actually worked! I brought it into the shop with the full intention of bandsawing it up and cutting my losses.

I just couldn't do it. I started talking to the techs in the shop, we decided to rescue it if we could. This is going to involve a good bit of work and skill to make this thing back into a Hamer. The initial exam showed that someone had shaved off one of the 'horns' quite a bit, almost 3/16".

So, the next step is to re-rout the trem cavity and block it in with a piece of mahogany. The Kahler mounting holes will be doweled and trimmed.

The plan: Since the neck angle is shallow on these, we are going to remove about .075"(+/-) of the original top and body, down to meet the sanded part, and cover the top with a AAAA maple cap. The top then gets bound with creme celluloid and I'm thinking a light Tobacco Sunburst finish. It'll get a 2-FIG bridge, new machine heads and all new hardware along with the original pickups.

I'll be posting up more pics as we go along on this project, along with descriptions of problems and solutions as we go. Stay Tuned!

I love the way the burst remains transparent to the edge. Great job Kim!

What caused you not to do the same on the headstock? Curious.

There had been some touchup done with Magic Marker and the ink soaked into the veneer and we couldn't get it out effectively enough to go to a transparent finish.

Almost ready for this:

I'm with Kiz on the logo. It is too small. Should be an easy fix at this stage of progress, right?

He needs one of my perfect early 1980's Special logo recreations...

These obviously don't have the little USA in the corner. These all got thrown away and I had another batch made with the correct USA in the lower right corner. I can get you the graphic design I used and created from scratch (yes, the SPECIAL letters were hand drawn). I consulted my 1981 and 1982 Special logos extensively for accuracy.

They are perfect but the graphics place got a little sloppy with my second batch and out of 8, only 4 or 5 were good.

ZMB,

That would be great, thanks! kkeller@fender.com...

I actually like the slightly smaller logo, it makes the guitar quite distinctive and you will all know what it is when you see it. It's my guitar, after all, so there's GOT to be something on it that pisses people off...I learned that from that 'Ken' guy (private joke for the REALLY old-timers here).

The final finish coats are on as of about 10 minutes ago, now we wait for the finish to cure (about 2 weeks).

Crappy lighting for photography, but you get the idea.

LOL!!!!!! Yeah...that 'Ken' guy was a real dick. HAHAHA!!!!

Jesus, I just realized that understanding that joke make me a "real old timer". Bummer. :)

BTW...the guitar looks spectacular Kim.

I'm digging it.

The waiting is the hardest part...

I kinda like the semi-gloss thing it has going on right now, but after buffing it will be spectacular. Beautiful.

I found this pic, before we peeled the stickers off, that accounts for the aformentioned 'funk':

That sticker should have been re-applied in the control cavity!

Al,

I'll have it on Sunday for the shoot on the boat. I'll bring this down for you, though, and toss it off the bus on the way by your place:

Thou I am a big hamer fan, I find, feel that Guild has found a nice home. A well respected name for a very long time with a lot of heritage in craftsmanship. when I was at the GCS, and the "flood guitars" started to come in... Duane Eddy's collection came in as well. His vintage Guilds were mixed in with others. Very sad. The worst part was seeing those Guilds being tossed aside with no attention to them at all. Made me very sad and angry at the same time. I offered to do whatever I could on my own time to at least to clean them up and stabilize. Nope. Very sad.

Sorry to derail Kim, but posting newly built pics of Guilds... I get a little teary. Nice to see Guild has a good home. I love my old M75

Jay,

No worries, Duane's Guild ended up at our Nashville shop and came up here, where we restored it:

This pic was taken during the process, but before completion. I can't find the finished pics right now, maybe they are at home...

Doyle Dykes was in when we were finishing it up (we worked on his '62 Starfire III) and called Duane while we were standing there. Rumor has it that Duane had forgotten about the guitar, written off to the flood and had forgotten that we had it and was tearful on its return. We had to pry it out of Doyle's hands, that particular guitar had a lot of history, most of Duane's hits were played on this guitar.

Yup, I remember that one.

Nice to see that some of them made it out to be restored.

Broke my heart. I was sooo pissed, a few months after, I stopped by at the FMIC location and applied... :o
