benjammin308 Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Jay, thank you for the superb work and the great pictures. A little background:The guitar: 1978 LPC, purchased at a Racine, Wi music store in the late eighties by a bandmate and good friend. Heavy as hell, but sounded huge. The damage had already been done: Kalher, Dimarzio's, tap switch, etc. It was boogered but Les Pauls were dirt cheap at the time, I'm talkin' maybe $400. I bought it from him when he switched to bass in the early ninties. I actually wanted it because it had the Kalher and at the time I needed a backup that had one. In recent years I've gotten away from the whammy thing (never was good at it) and this guitar had become a wall decoration. Except every time I looked at it, that big chrome Kalher became uglier and uglier, and I would wonder what it would look and sound like if it were still original. The pickups: the Dimarzio's sounded awesome but didn't seem "right" to me from an originality standpoint. I had this pair of old something-or-others in my parts drawer that I was told when I got them were Ibanez. They were actually in my 1980 Hamer Special when I bought it about 1988. I got the whole guitar for $150, so I didn't care what pickups were in it. They sounded good in the Special but the gold covers looked dumb so I took them off. Some years later I put some period correct Dimarzio's in the special because I couldn't stand the thought of having Ibanezs in my Hamer. So anyway, one day more recently I'm going through those parts and notice that the pickup bobbins have a little "T" molded in them. These are Gibsons! I didn't know what a T-top was back then but I do now, and these might be perfect for the old LPC.A couple of years ago I found the HFC and started drooling over Jay's "shop haps" threads. It soon became obvious that he was the right man to restore the LPC to its former glory. I finally got the courage up to box it up, throw in the T-tops, and send it to Nashville. I am completely excited to rock this thing once again, looking and sounding like it should.
murkat Posted May 12, 2013 Author Posted May 12, 2013 and to add about the T tops...they appear to be late 60's ish T Tops.Might have been re worked at some point, or not... red leads.they are hot for T topss, mid 8's.and the neck pup is jazz pup, narrow spacing...after correcting a few issues with them, potted them lightly, and install in the LPC, OMFG,... T Tops with balls and growl.Very, very nice.I am sure the TOM and hvy TP are adding some J Lo to the tone table...But, even with a modded ABR-1 bridge for that top end shimmer, they "wood" be still juicy good.J
murkat Posted May 12, 2013 Author Posted May 12, 2013 I'm guessing that "J Lo" = big bottom? you got skills
MCChris Posted May 14, 2013 Posted May 14, 2013 And I don't care what anyone says, his nippers are still nice.
