Imiss85 Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 I know he did use a Hamer Sunburst in the early years (there's your content!) But does anyone know what kind of Amps/Pedals he used on the Sports album? I've always loved his sound on that album.
MCChris Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 I blame that sumbitch for being the reason Hamer won't put a Standard headstock on a Sunburst/Special/Studio (I remember Hayes' custom Gibson had that headstock/body style combo).Anyone know why he isn't in the band anymore? He appeared in their "Behind the Music" episode and there didn't seem to be any hard feelings. Did he just get sick of the touring?

Anyone that would cause Hamer not to do that must be HATED.I want to buy MANY Hamers, but I NEED that headstock. In a double cut.
Imiss85 Posted November 18, 2005 Author Posted November 18, 2005 Yeah, I think he just got tired of being on the road. He did fill in on a few dates on their tour this past July when their current guitar player had to miss some gigs.
LucSulla Posted November 22, 2015 Posted November 22, 2015 Necropost. I was just thinking how much I liked this guys guitar work today. When you google him, this post pops up on the first page, haha.
Len Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Loved Chris Hayes ... but Huey's current guitarist Steph Burns is Smokin' ...
ARM OF HAMER Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Great player! Chris could do so much more than what he was playing on stage for Huey Lewis............... he was a very hot jazz and fusion player so he really had to turn it down in terms of what was needed for the "News" band. I read somewhere that his other family members[sister and Brother] are also similarly talented on their respective instruments. He grew tired of all the traveling and wanted to spend time at home with his family. When I saw the "NEWS" band he was Hamerless. ..............playing Gibson "SPIRIT" guitar. But.....................here he is "BURSTING"
elduave Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Loved Chris Hayes ... but Huey's current guitarist Steph Burns is Smokin' ...I feel like I've heard that name before.
The Shark Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Saw Huey w/ Chris in the late eighties. What a great band.
RobB Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 The fact that the last thing Bill Graham saw before he died was Huey Lewis proves that, indeed, there is no God...
tommy p Posted November 23, 2015 Posted November 23, 2015 Loved Chris Hayes ... but Huey's current guitarist Steph Burns is Smokin' ...Loved Chris Hayes ... but Huey's current guitarist Steph Burns is Smokin' ...I feel like I've heard that name before. He spells it Stef with an "F". Dave, you probably heard his name from being in Y&T for a few years, but a Google search will show you he's played with some other folks too.
Steve Haynie Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Today is Hayes' birthday.November 24, 1957 – Chris Hayes, guitar (Huey Lewis and the News)
tomteriffic Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Slight derail: Saw them when Mario Cippolina was playing bass. He was rocking a 1st Gen Cruisebass, red with a black pickguard. i didn't know what it was at the time but eventually figured it out, once i got Hamer-savvy. Still casually looking for one like that all these years later.
Willie G. Moseley Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 RE the Sunburst w/ a Std. headstock: I'd thunk it was a Gibson Spirit model (I only seen it from a distance in concert). The band played in Montgomery, AL in '87, on a night that was originally supposed to have been an off night between NOLA and Atlanta, so the university that booked 'em reportedly got a good deal.Robert Cray was the opening act, supporting Strong Persuader. Richard Cousins on bass, Tim Kaihatsu on second guitar. My recollection is that Hayes played a steel blue guitar as described above, while Johnny Colla played a Strat when he wasn't playing sax. Cippolina played some kind of candy apple red headless bass, with a standard-looking body with pointy cutaways...a Status, maybe? The highlights of the evening, for me at least, were "Walking on a Thin Line", as well as the participation of the Tower of Power horns. They really got into their duties, and had a huge sound that supplemented the band in exactly how it should have.Big fun, some 28-29 years ago.
