RichRS6 Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 This must count as one of the biggest one hit wonders ever. OK He had others but none that even came close to this one.
Biz Prof Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Fun song. Recall seeing that video years ago, but until the song went viral on the web as the musical backdrop of an iPhone video-captured fight on a city bus, I never noticed that Bill Barlett's Lester is a custom-build and not a factory Gibby. He was really into modding Mosrites back then, so perhaps this Lester is a rebuild of a Gibson. Freeze-frame at 0:41 for a good look at the headstock. And while we're watching....this video contains a slew of 70s exaggerations and cliches: Nearly all members sporting poorly-groomed facial hair One member wearing Paul Willlams-style modified aviator glasses One member balding/wearing a bandana At least one Les Paul Deluxe Gibsons with odd modifications Standers-by appearing to be high and malnourished At least one sighting of a tuck-and-roll Kustom At least one sighting of a muscle bike And what the hell is that guy on the left (black shirt/jacket with white pants) doing? He's within the "stage" area, but he's not playing an instrument. He does appear to be inebriated.
Feynman Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 This must count as one of the biggest one hit wonders ever. OK He had others but none that even came close to this one. Umm...wow. I always thought that was a woman.
RichRS6 Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Don't worry, it's been covered by just about everyone, including some women.

grahams98 Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 That cheerleader song. Bm Toni Basil. She had her own T.V. show over here. Geeky factoid. She played a hooker in Easy Rider and got her norks out. I left a band with paying gigs when this was a hit because the lead singer/keyboard player insisted we play this song. I now realize I might have been guilty of taking myself to seriously...then again, it still sucks.
mc2 Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 RAM JAM...BLACK BETTY...... That band formed in LI/NYC area....same guitarist from the "Green Tambourine" one hit wonder Lemon Pipers and Billy Joel's old bass player from Joel's pre-solo band The Hassles. Toni Basil....Yeah, she is the other hooker chick with Karen Black in Easy Rider in all the New Orleans scenes with Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda. Classic!
Tres Aardvarks Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 And what the hell is that guy on the left (black shirt/jacket with white pants) doing? He's within the "stage" area, but he's not playing an instrument. He does appear to be inebriated. Isn't that their main singer? If not, it's damned weird.
mc2 Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 That Ersel Hickey tune reminded me if this...one of the first, if not THE first, U.S. reggae/ska hits. Desmond Dekker & The Aces - "Israelites"

Looked it up and you are correct.
mc2 Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 This must count as one of the biggest one hit wonders ever. OK He had others but none that even came close to this one. That may be because he didn't write this one....a Badfinger tune !! I love old Badfinger and their hits are first class...but Neilsen's version IS much better than the original Badfinger version. BUT...Neilsen DID have a bigger hit....Theme from Midnight Cowboy (Everybody's Talkin')...staring Angelina Jolie's future poppa!! Everybody's Talkin' . Midnight Cowboy
Brooks Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 r/e ram jam, i thought i read that was their buddy/dope dealer
crunchee Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Maybe they had another hit, but I can't think of it, so there you go... Perhaps revealing my southern upbringing here, I dig the unapologetic redneck rockers. They kinda did, minus Dan Baird...this old chestnut:
aknapp Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 They may have had other hits in Canada, but this is the only one I remember in the States. ALWAYS puts me in a better mood whenever I hear it.
Feynman Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 r/e ram jam, i thought i read that was their buddy/dope dealer That song goes way back, probably well before this guy ever recorded it: I've heard there was some slavery commentary going on in the lyrics, but Google informs me there are several possible interpretations. Perhaps one was the foreshadowing of Ram Jam's dope dealer.

Midnight Cowboy My favorite Nilsson song is 'Jump Into the Fire,' famously heard on the soundtrack to Goodfellas.
HamerHokie Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 I think this is one of the best pop songs ever for a number if reasons. New Radicals - You Get What You Give - Green Hamer Cruisebass in this one!! The critics said the New Radical hit reminded them of World Party and the Waterboys - both famous one hit wonders themselves! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_BoAXopS54
