RichRS6 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 May not really count as a OHW but it's certainly the one most people remember them for.
LefThanDed Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Can't believe I forgot this 1960's classic: "That Thing You Do" by The Onedershttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzllVlzzeuo(Sounds like Fountains of Wayne were heavily influenced by these guys.)
jim777 Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 http://youtu.be/Ldyx3KHOFXw "Cars" was Gary's second hit, behind "Are Friends Electric" http://youtu.be/55f9x-mbKHQ
crunchee Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I don't think Unknown Hinson has hit any charts, but I like his stuff. Unfortunately, practically all his live videos on YooToob have muddy-sounding vocals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWMwE6y_RQs This one is from a band from Atlanta, IIRC. I don't think it charted anywhere either, but it's catchy!
mudshark Posted July 31, 2014 Author Posted July 31, 2014 He's enjoyed a stellar career on the Zydeco circuit, but far as I know only a single hit:
Toadroller Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Level 42, Something About You.http://youtu.be/wbyqri2sfto
jamminpete Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Aldo Nova`s Fantasy would have been my pick, Toadroller beat me by 12 hours...... 2nd choice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6nRGBwnw1M I`d love to find one of those ESP/Killer guitars........ Thunder in the East is a killer album and so is Lightning Strikes. I've seen Killer guitars on ebay. Here's an esp Takasaki model for ya: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ESP-AKIRA-TAKASAKI-Signature-Model-Random-Star-TARAKU-LOUDNESS-MODEL-Back-Order-/280916257247?pt=Guitar&hash=item4167e9e9df only $13,500 He is a great guitarist one of my favorite.
tommy p Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I'm loving this thread and the link to one-hit-wonders by decade that Johnny B provided! It's amazing how many of these my band does or has done.
mathman Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 One of my favorite local bands. They played quite often in Pensacola in the early 80's.The Producers She Sheilahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bq9nXgbhyLg
mc2 Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 In trying to find a clip of this band...I just learned they were from San Diego. For some reason, I always assumed they were a local NYC band from maybe NJ and thought this was just a regional hit. Also just found a clip of them live on Merv Griffin....uh...beards and NuWave were a bad combination choice. Always thought this was a great pop single....turns out the band was signed to a Japanese label that pulled out of the U.S. market while the single was climbing the charts before the band 's music video was shot...then they signed to CBS and got shelved. Another case of "Death by Label." The Monroes LP version Dub on Merv Griffin 1982
Willie G. Moseley Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Fair to say that Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend" qualifies (and it's a great song, particularly for guitar lovers/players, on accounta the presence of Robert Quine and/or Tom Verlaine)?
TBP Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Great thread. Some of those that jumped in my mind have been posted, especially "Mexican Radio" and "Turning Japanese," but then there's this. The Men's Church of Logic, Sin and Love. Goofy song, but I remember first hearing it while taking a long trip. It emerged over the radio while I was zipping through a long stretch of flat interstate somewhere in Indiana. I'm not sure if Focus qualifies as a one hit wonder, but I don't think they nor anyone did something else quite like this:
RichRS6 Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 No one has ever or will ever do anything like that again. Not exactly a OHW but probably the only hit to ever combine yodelling and awesome rock guitar playing.
Feynman Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 No one has ever or will ever do anything like that again. I hope you are right about this.
Punkavenger Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Is "Sonic Reducer" a one hit wonder? If so ... thats my fav
Teh Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 And I'm surprised no one has brought this (cough) classic up yet...
RichRS6 Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 I saw the Seagulls in my local pub in Leeds at the beginning of the New Romantic" thing before I ran charted, the place was packed with weird haircuts, everytime someone turned round they nearly had your eye out..They were pretty good actually.
Willie G. Moseley Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 To what extent was AFOS's "Wishing" a second hit after "I Ran"? Granted, it didn't set the woods on fire like "I Ran" did, but it got a decent amount of airplay, the video had decent rotation on MTV, it had a decent electronic sound, and that sustain/buzz on the outro was a tone to die for, IMO (although it might be generous to refer to it as a "guitar solo"...). Of the two, I actually preferred "Wishing"; YMMV.
Toadroller Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 You want 80s? I'm a child of the 80s! Another 2 hit wonder, Dead or Alive Round and Round Brand new Lover
oldskoolrulz Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 heard this on the radio earlier tonight, pretty sure it was their only hit
oldskoolrulz Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 and this band is one my fav one hit wonders who are currently still rockin' their asses off, if you ever have a chance to catch them live you will not be disappointed
jamminpete Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 I used to here this on the radio all the time. They were one of the most underrated bands. I have all 3 of their CDs and every song kicks ass!
