Hamersaur Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Argent - "Hold Your Head Up"Jonathan Edwards - "Sunshine"
rj2858 Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Great White - Rock Me You may have forgotten these 2, and at least as far as the Great White video, I'm stunned! Great old Ian Hunter tune and Bobbie Brown! and this even had a pretty cool cover done around 1983, by Josie Cotton. I always thought this was a better song than "Brandy"
rj2858 Posted September 3, 2015 Posted September 3, 2015 Though my 2 favs were posted long ago, (Amboy Dukes & The Blues Magoos), I'll play. One was a song I liked back then ('68 - interesting to note, Mike Appel was in this band) , , the other... well, it was a one hit wonder.I tried to use the Ian Whitcomb song to stump a Chicago area player who performed at a buddy's Dad's bar, and had a standing bet that if he couldn't play and sing any song you named that was released on the "A" side of a nationally released Rock 'n' Roll single between 1953 and 1970, he'd buy you a drink. Guys' name was Gerry Grossman, and he goes by the nickname "The Human Jukebox" (still to this day). I never saw this guy beaten, and thought for sure I had him one night in 1984.. Sitting at the bar one night with some friends, I raised my hand when he was looking for anyone to try, and Gerry looks and says to me, "You always have good ones, wadda ya got?" Confident, I said "You Turn Me On", and before I could say any more, Gerry fires back with; "by Ian Whitcomb, wow, great song, you know he just released a book about the old days of the British Invasion", and proceeded to play it. Oh well...
Toadroller Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Scandal (Patty Smyth) - The Warrior Patty Smyth was actually Eddie Van Halen's FIRST CHOICE to replace DLR in VH. Sammy was his second choice. Nothing against Patty, but I can't even imagine what the band would have become without Sammy stepping into the band when he did. More of the bizarro world of EVH.... Oh, I think Patty could have held her own. I remember watching this live in my dorm room.http://youtu.be/EjrAGQEYTFY
veatch Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Make that a two-hit wonder... Edited for spelling...
BubbaVO Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 1986...Melissa S***man. Way above my league. Or at least that's a shot of beer a minute for 60 minutes told my 140 lb. frame back in the day.
rj2858 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 And speaking of Donnie Iris, I submit this little ditty when he really was part of a one hit wonder;
LefThanDed Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 and this even had a pretty cool cover done around 1983, by Josie Cotton. I always thought this was a better song than "Brandy" As I recall.... K-Tel superhit band "Looking Glass" morphed into arena rockers "Starz":
rj2858 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 ^^^ you be right about dat, along with former "Stories" guitarist, Richie Ranno, I believe.
Armitage Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Yup. I already said that when I posted Brandy. Same drummer and bassist.. got rid of the keyboard player... then new singer and guitarist. Richie is actually really cool too.
Toadroller Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Scandal (Patty Smyth) - The Warrior Patty Smyth was actually Eddie Van Halen's FIRST CHOICE to replace DLR in VH. Sammy was his second choice. Nothing against Patty, but I can't even imagine what the band would have become without Sammy stepping into the band when he did. More of the bizarro world of EVH.... Oh, I think Patty could have held her own. I remember watching this live in my dorm room. I'm not saying Patty isn't a good singer; I think she's an awesome singer. What I'm getting at is the song content; Sammy brought so much maturity to the table songwriting-wise that re-defined post DLR Van Halen as a band, and in a good way. Patty is a great singer, but she hasn't produced near the wealth of original material that Sammy Hagar has and I just have to wonder what would've become of Van Halen if they went with her instead of Sammy. All you really have to do is look at what happened when they brought Gary Cherone in to replace Sammy Hagar. The band imploded. The song composition was at best lackluster and that showed in the lack of albums sales. It completely tanked and much of the fan base hated it. Gary Cherone is at least as good a singer as Patty Smyth. I have to agree with you. 5150 is a fabulous album and still in constant rotation. Watch the "live without a net" concert and you'll be amazed at the energy and showmanship back in 1986. The Cherone era (or weekend, if you prefer) wasn't much. Having seen the reunited VH in 14 at a corporate gig... Well, 1984 was obviously better. I remember being blown away by this Patty performance on Letterman back in the day and was thrilled to find it on YouTube. I even remembered the extra guitarist flipping his Kramer over his shoulder!
3of5 Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Don't think this has been posted. The greatest Beatle rip off ever. Great song.
mrjamiam Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Reminded of this one today. Not an overall smash, but a top ten modern rock hit, back when they used gee-tars in music and videos.
Sentinel Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Mr Bloe - Groovin with Mr Bloe. Their only hit. Peaked at no 2 in England. I was 14 and loved the song (instrumental), with it's clever harmonica melody line. Bought the LP when it came, it was my FIRST album. Ah, sweet memories.

I have all 3 of their CDs and every song kicks ass! Love Mindfunk, esp their 2nd album "Dropped", great grunge band that never hit it big.
Brooks Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Not exactly a one-hit wonder Vehicle (cover by Generic Hustle) 1979 DFW Regonal hit by The Telefones - She's In Love With The Rolling Stones

I didn't know anybody had ever heard of them! I have 2 or 3 CD singles of theirs that I got while working in a CD store. I'll find them and let you know if they have unreleased songs on them. If so, you're welcome to them.
