Doyle Dykes

Word up y'all!

I went to a guitar clinic at a local music store last night to see some dude named Doyle Dykes play his guitar. I've never gone to one of these because, I don't know, they seem lame.

It was very cool! I'm still in the discovery phase of what this guy has done and can do, but holy wow, can he ever play! He sounds like an orchestra on a 6 string!!

He was doing demos for Godin, and his new signature model, which is, for ease of description, like a Chet Atkins electric/acoustic thing (Carved and chambered 'hog back with spruce top), with LR Baggs Piezo, as well as an LR Baggs internal microphone that can be blended in to taste. Sounded like the best of a mic'd acoustic, combined with the piezo.

Anyway, based on the full house and the age range in the store, I'm late to the party.

You folks know of Doyle Dykes? If you don't and have the chance to check him out in any way shape or form, do it! Doesn't matter what style you play or prefer, he'll blow you away.

Saw him in 2005 in Shreveport, LA with @Jeff R and @Hamerica.

The man plays like he has four hands.  Just beautiful and amazing.

Seen him several times over the years when he was endorsing Taylor.  Virtuoso on an acoustic guitar. If you have not seen him go !!

Wasn’t he a Guld endorser when Fender owned Guild? I thought he performed at a Guild open house I attended

Yes, I think he attended the Eddie Van Halen School of Endorsing.

I've seen him live twice. Unbelievable.....

I have also performed live with him in the audience (no pressure, ha).

Fine -tuning: The Taylor sig model came before Guild. Also saw him in Shreveport James Burton Festivals in '05 and also there in '09. As I understand it, he's the only guy who Burton invited back to every festival, and that's sayin' somethin, considering the players who appeared over the years. Here's an '09 image.

Comparison invited--it'd be hard to find another player who is that much of a virtuoso on both acoustic and electric.

His duet with Eric Johnson on "Red Clay" (on the Bridging the Gap album) is a jaw-dropper.

Ditto Dykes' live Warp Ten version of "Wabash Cannonball"

The Chameleon album is mind-blowing as well.

The first time I saw him a number of years ago at a Taylor clinic, I felt like I needed to go home and throw out my guitars because I will never come close to that level of player. It's like he has a band in his fingers.....

Exactly! Like four hands, using every part of each hand.

Not sure why the Taylor thing fell through, but I think he joined Guild and it all collapsed before anything happened for his model. He was just going to use whatever he had on hand then Godin kind of fell into his lap.

It was his birthday, and the rep brought out a cake. He started playing "When I'm 64" and kept saying "It's my birthday, but I'm not gonna tell ya how old I am!" The song sounded like it was being played by the full orchestra!!

ArnieZ,

I'm pretty sure that was the last time I saw you.   I know the Guild Open House that I attended Doyle was there!   Doyle went to Guild after he moved from Taylor and they made a Doyle Dykes Model.

I had a trip planned to pick up a 4 digit Standard I had sent to the factory after dgstandard had his done.  Mr. Kim Keller had restored for me with the wonder folks at the factory and ensured it was done in time to coincide with the event.   Not Steve, Stonge and the lovely Ms. Stonge, Amy, and Alpep I can recall were in attendance.     My wife and daughter attended the Guild Open House tour at the New Hartford factory.  Lunch was at the ski resort and Doyle performed.  The wife and daughter won a several posters and the daughter won the grand prize a custom one off Guild Guitar, (there is a good story there).

After Doyle performed, he signed all the giveaway posters and we purchased one of his books and a couple of CDs for him to sign as well.   Doyle was just as mind-blowing then as he was when I saw him with Kiz and JeffR.

That Shreveport Trip was also the first time I saw Greg Koch.   Bad Brad Paisley was trying to get into a guitar throw down with Eric Johnson and he was not having anything to do with it.   EJ did find polar north that night or I should say his tech did - ; ^ )

He is a fantastic player and a really nice, down to earth guy.  We had a nice surprise at one of our holiday parties at the shop when he stopped by and did a christmas concert for us. I think he was a Guild artist at the time. He brought one of his Christmas CDs for each of us, signed them and spent time hanging out with us for a while. It was a cool day, wish I could find my pictures from it.

Nice guy and a helluva player.  He stopped by to play a Christmas party at the shop and then played the following year when we had the Christmas party at ski sundown.

he autographed a copy of his audio book “ the lights of Marfa” and gave it to me.  The man had an opportunity to play with Elvis straight out of high school and turned him down.

I worked setup at Guild at the time.   Doyle’s preferred setup was a pain in the ass to replicate on his signature model.  Ultra ultra low action ..

Indeed! last time I saw any of the aforementioned folks. The date was September 20th IIRC. Had to leave before the end of the show and the giveaways as my daughter-in-law

decided to go into labor with our first grandchild. Peter was there as well!
