G Man Posted December 10, 2020 Posted December 10, 2020 I'm reading this thread and wondering where the hell was I last June. This is less than an hour from me and I totally would have grabbed this bass. Oh well, glad the new owner is treating her right.
Chazman Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 Just beginning the project, but here are some pics. I'm thinking a natural finish once the yellow paint is removed. Are you happy now, Rodi ?
stonge Posted December 12, 2020 Author Posted December 12, 2020 looks good so far. any signs of another finish under the yellow? my guess was that somebody just rattle-canned over the top of an original finish. I can't imagine someone going to the trouble of stripping it just to spray paint it that color.

The one in the front, without, is an '88. About 5 years ago, I drove from Minneapolis to Norfolk, VA to pick up the front one. :). I really like the yellow color on the one in the OP. Worth another road trip? Hmmmm. Glad to see it's gone to a good home.
Chazman Posted December 13, 2020 Posted December 13, 2020 It looks like it originally had a natural finish. Then, it looks like the body was refinished "professionally" to yellow. After that someone went over the whole thing with a spray can. It originally had a pick guard. There are little white dots where the screw holes were. This is my first refinish.

Best of luck on the restoration.
gtone Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Prolly wanna remove the hardware before you go any further with that project. Just sayin'...

Chazman Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 Sanding starting tomorrow (1/1/21). I bought 2 grades of sand paper 120 & 220 also 000 steel wool. Ordered Tru Oil for finish. It played so well, I didn't want to mess with the bridge or electronics (this is my first refinish). I'll post pics after sanding and before I start finishing. This is truly a labor of love. Happy New Year, Rock On!

Mahogany is an open grained wood and the guitar you start with will end up being an expensive toothpick and a pile of sawdust before you know it (speaking from very regrettable experience, unfortunately).
Dutchman Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 Don’t forget the filler before you shoot the clear or it’ll never look right!!
JustKid Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 I might add my 2 cents - I wouldn't start with 120. If you use sander, do the 220 and see where it takes you. You might even have a chance not to sand thru original grain filler
killerteddybear Posted January 1, 2021 Posted January 1, 2021 Why not a chemical stripper or heat strip? They don't risk the removal of wood.

Punkavenger Posted January 2, 2021 Posted January 2, 2021 I had a similar project and it came out awesome. Used citrus stripper and let it soak for 24hrs in a plastic trash bag. Tru oil 7 coats . 0000 steel wool between coats. Pics might have been posted here somewhere. Take off all the hardware and pickups ... its really not bad
JustKid Posted January 3, 2021 Posted January 3, 2021 About the steel wool...while it's a great thing to have, it creates so much dust, that you will definitely need a mask, so it's kinda 20th century. For my last project I used pads instead, like CANOPUS - 3M Scotch Brite Scuff Pads, they come in fine , ultra fine and other grids, and they create the same finish but without all those wooly small particles flying around. and you could wash them too.
