#89

...and gone to heaven, Shawn. Well, it's pretty close anyways.

#89 is cool for a lot of reasons. I had Hamer #89, a 1977 Sunburst, that was a busted mess and Greg put it back in order. Being such an early one actually saved its life.

Then I put an order in with Mike and got #89, an alignment of sorts I guess. It was a hodgepodge of all the guitars that came before it with a couple tweaks for good measure.

It's got the Les Paul's switch placement and Ebony board, the Junior's P90 and fat neck (Mike nailed it!), the Special FM's flamey goodness, the 30th Anniversary's chambered body, the last Sustain Block made by me, and a tip-'o-the-cap to the woman who keeps me alive.

These pictures suck. The random flame happening is beautiful and reeeelly tough to photograph. I know the color knocked down the wildness of the top, but in a good way. If I had a niggle, it's that the color is more red than expected, but that worked out, too. The deeper burgundy I'd originally wanted would have totally killed the top.

The faux binding is killer, as are the Luminlay side dots and Sperzel open-back tuners. The 24-fret thing was mostly to move the neck pickup closer to the bridge and thin it out a bit. It worked.

And once again, Josh nailed the pickups. I said '50s P90 for the bridge and a single coil in the neck, both in humbucker size. And he delivered!. I haven't A/B'd it with the Junior, but my naked ear says this P90 is pretty damn close. How does he do it?? Thanks, Josh!!

So... Shishkov #89. A huge Thank You  to Mike and Trish for bringing it to life. The build quality is amazing. Mike really takes the very best of what Hamer did to another level. It's pretty f***ing cool.

Didn't see the color coming, but man that looks beautiful.  That's the coolest faux binding effect I've seen, and maybe the first I've seen on a headstock.

LOVE it!

now...  when you say the neck is “fat” how fat do you mean, really...?

So...  not even a little fat then. Just old and saggy.  Got it...

The faux binding is indeed beautiful as is the entire guitar.the pickup choice is awesome and is exactly what I have in my Newport, except they are Rumpel...the slug single in the neck adds a lot of clarity.

I have those same Sperzel tuners on my 12 string and they are a wonderfully ingenious locking tuner that work VERY well.

I like fat necks.

That piece of art is AMAZING. Period. Nicely done!

Amazing! And a great story too! #89.

Faux binding is a great alternativ to real binding. One of my guitars has it on the headstock too. Very nice.

I never did answer that, did I? God my wife hates that.

I asked Mike for 'big, like my 2005 Junior' and he knew exactly what that was and matched it perfectly. It's not a tree trunk, but a really nice comfortably big handful. So if you've played any of the BCR Juniors from around that same time period you'll have an idea what it is. I appreciate it more as I get older.

What I didn't expect was how great the neck heel is. Best of any guitar I've ever picked up. It just perfectly flows into the palm of your hand. Pretty sweet.

Ordering tip: You married guys listen up. I showed her the truss rod cover with her name on it and she smiled. I flipped it over to show her our Anniversary date stamped into the back of the headstock and she almost cried. INSTANTLY off the hook for getting another guitar.

Unfortunately, I have not had the pleasure of playing a BCR junior. I’m trying to decide between something big and round like that or a V carve like my Talladega neck.

That is a really good tip on the TRC, tho. I wonder if I get that on #0123, my wife would be good if I immediately put in another order  You know, one with my name on it to match.

Ok, just talked to my wife about it. Here’s how it went down...

showed her the TRC with your wife’s name on it and told her the story. She said I should get my son’s birthday stamped on it so when he inherits it, it’ll be more meaningful.

I said, if that’s the case, then I should order two more, one for each of us.

Also, my wife’s name is Holly. So, instead of her name on the TRC, I could get leaves of Holly stamped in there.

or, wait...  instead if a “tree of life” inlay like on a Jem, vines of Holly inlays..... 🤔

Yeah, she probably wouldn't like 'Diane' on there then.

My two Hamer COs had my kid's names on them, so I had to do the wife. Hers is removable though, in case....you know....things don't work out.....

What's the story here?

BCR Greg talked Hamer into doing a run of Sustain Block guitars in '02. I made about 30 of them, some going on guitars, some sold separately. I stashed one for a future Hamer CO, then they went away.

I had two questions for Mike: could he put the switch on the upper horn, and would he use my last Sustain Block. Having my parts on a few Hamers and now a Shishkov is pretty amazing.
