diablo175 Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 Loving my recently-acquired Standard but not it's 'top hat' volume and tone knobs. The stock ones fit aesthetically but functionally they SUCK! I've got the knurled, dome-type on the vast majority of my harem. Looking for suitable alternatives to the top hats. Hoping to find something that checks both function and aesthetic boxes. Suggestions?
DaveH Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 Would something like this work? Knobs ETA: May be too 'present', with the shine
ARM OF HAMER Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 This may be "Blasphemy" for Hamer fan here but what about something like this? Back in the day I had quite a few Ibanez guitars including several "Artists" that had these knobs and they do work great for you to " GET A GRIP ON THINGS" Ibanez Sure-grip guitar knobs 1970’s - Gold original vintage MIJ Japan Artist custom agent | Reverb These shown are original but I do believe Ibanez reissued these knobs also.

These are exactly what I was thinking! But 44.00 per knob??? Well, truth be told, I could just get one and replace the bridge volume knob seeing as I don't touch the rhythm and tone knobs anyway
Cboss Posted November 11, 2023 Posted November 11, 2023 I can't stand the witches hats either, put these on my standard and they look and work great for me. Gibson makes them for double, SURE they are exactly the same knob. Schecter speed knobs are the shit but have not gotten anywhere finding them

Slippery little devils.

I came here to say the exact same thing. I’ve seen the sets of 4 (or 2) sell for under $10/knob recently.
Jim85IROC Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 What about PRS lamp shades? I think they look great, they feel great, and the numbers are very easy to see.
Jeff R Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 I also love the look and detest the functionality. Since you and I find them hard to grip and turn ... replace the OEM pots with either Bourns or Seymour Duncan low friction pots.
ARM OF HAMER Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 Knobs with the rubber grips have been around for quite awhile, Ibanez had them and their guitars back in the day and so did Peavey. These were original on the Peavey Odyssey I owned at one time .
diablo175 Posted November 12, 2023 Author Posted November 12, 2023 Just ordered a set of these in solid black for the Lester Axcess and a set of the Ibanez top hats for the Standard
ZR Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 Those Ibanez sure grips or whatever their official name is are my favorites. I had those Ibanez knobs on my early 80s Destroyer II.
Jakeboy Posted November 14, 2023 Posted November 14, 2023 The Peaveys are fantastic and look great with a deep amber color..,call Peavey Parts and Service.

I had those knobs with the rubber strip on my 1981 Ibanez Destroyer II guitar. I'm glad to see that someone is making them again, but the downside to having them is that if you rotate the volume knob a lot, the rubber strip gets stretched out like a belt on a car motor, starts to get loose, then after it becomes loose, it just flops around on the volume knob hanging on, then it gets entangled underneath your volume knob/volume pot. It becomes a nuisance after that. Ask me how I know. You can always wrap around a small rubber band on your volume knob if you want that fast grip when your hands are sweaty onstage. It's easier to replace and cheap to do.

Anyone can go to Home Depot or Lowe's, buy some a couple of rubber plumbing washer rings, and slide it over their volume knobs.

Turns out, it fits fine. Maybe a tiny bit loose due to their being used. Luckily, I only ordered one in case of any issues. Now I can order 2 more for the set.
diablo175 Posted November 18, 2023 Author Posted November 18, 2023 While I'm at it, anyone know some foolproof approaches to secure a slightly loose fitting Vol knob?
ZR Posted November 18, 2023 Posted November 18, 2023 I've never tried it in this application, but what about a wrap or two of Teflon plumbers tape?
Dave Scepter Posted November 19, 2023 Posted November 19, 2023 2 hours ago, ZR said: I've never tried it in this application, but what about a wrap or two of Teflon plumbers tape? Probably not Teflon but perhaps a tiny piece of aluminum foil placed over "blanketed" the shaft "that retains spine shape" to fit knob tighter?.. a tiny drop of hot glue would also work... would have to experiment/trim aluminum to control snuggness.... same with hot glue
