I went to 9.5s on 24.75 in LP/Hamer Studio sclae gutiars a while back and have found it to be a real happy medium. I've went to 8.5 or 9s on 25.5 fender scale stuff. Really depends on what feels best on the guitar for whatever reason. I can see really see why some of these well knwon fols have went lower as my hands/wrist/etc. all feel great and so much less tension, and I generally just play better.

Hamer in the front, Peavey in the back - me like this. And he is absolutely right. If it comes to guitars or to photography, the gear rabbithole should not matter. But it dies, if course. It took me (like anybody else, I guess) several years to realize that more or „better“ gear doesn‘t make me a better player or photographer. It just makes you a player/photographer with less money…

Shane is the real deal... I have lots of great guitars and gear, but my mantra is, "I can suck equally on anything".... If i spent half as much time practicing as I do screwing around on the internet forums and screwing around with my gear, I'd still suck! So, that's why I love having the toys!! 😉

There was likely a time I played 10's but it would've been back when I didn't know shit and was playing basic power chords and single string passages. Since the late 80's, I've played nothing but 9-42's. The exception would be on my Hamer Standard where I have a .48 and the rest are the usual .09- .32. I've wrestled with neck size and profile as well and have run the gamut of Wizard-thin to baseball bats on a BC Rich Warbeast and a few earlier Hamers. I now find that I hover in the middle with the Charvel and Jackson D shapes as my fave but have actually learned to get on with every neck carve in my collection- CS Axcess Les Paul, 50th Anniv. SG, Hamer Standard and Cali C-shapes, etc. I think @Steve Haynie might be right: it seems more an issue of having grown comfortable with the necks I have in the collection. I played Jackson D shapes back in the early 90's before discovering Hamers, and now I'm back to them. Luckily, I haven't encountered any serious, long-term hand issues... ...yet.

My preference has been for medium to thicker necks in the last 20 years. Recently, the thought of selling my thinner neck Special has been getting more and more justified. It could be a matter of "what you're used to" rather than willingness to adapt, but I really think it is time to say goodbye to thin necks.

I have found that larger necks are less stress on my hands than thinner ones. I know this seems counter intuitive to some people, but it requires less pressure than squeezing a thinner neck arniez

Went out with my wife and a whole bunch of bandmates, local musicians and legends to catch Del Amitri in a tiny club (Atlantis) on Sunday night. They’re always phenomenal live, but I really wanted to catch one of my favorite local acts, Dot Dash, who was the opener. As my wife and I were enjoying a cold beverage on the rooftop deck, Hunter Bennett from Dot Dash came over and said “Chris! My Hamer guru!”. We’ve chatted online for years about gear, specifically Hamers, and he has some incredible stuff (including Tom Petersson’s old 8 String FB, and a green flametop B-08M that was custom ordered by somebidy here years ago. Anyway, he let me know he was slinging his latest - a set neck mid-80s Cruisebass with an amburburst flame top. Hunter is an incredible player, and is a cool combination of Peter Hook, Bruce Foxton, Entwistle and the lead bassist from Ned’s Atomic Dustbin. 😉 Really a solid and talented guy, and always has the best tone live. Anyway, here’s a crappy pic or two for y’all, but seriously check out their stuff - great catalog
