belgian Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 A friend just got this Redwood Studio, and he's not really happy with a flaw in the wood, it's a black line (almost as made with a black marker). What do you think he should do ? What would the dealers on this board do, if they get a really expensive guitar like this custom order for one of their customers ?
sw686blue Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 I think that's a "natural" flaw of mother nature. Does it exist on the other bookmatch side?
seeker Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 I recall that Jol said he'll not do redwood guitars again; had to go thru too much wood to get the quality they wanted. Maybe this one slipped thru. If it is sent back, it'll probably be run thru a bandsaw.
Steve Haynie Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 Your friend can make a complaint. He may or may not get a response that suits him. I could live with a natural flaw in the redwood. I would be more concerned if there were an indentation rather than a discoloration.I had a 1980-81 Rickenbacker 4001 that is probably the last maple instrument that I can remember not having a knot or some kind of imperfection anywhere .
Sentinel Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 It's like when a pine gets twisted by the wind. All natural. But that doesn't mean that you have to like it, of course. My Elite is full of knots, etc... I like it. It gives her character!
thecajunboy Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 I think Al Gore invented that type of flaw. But seriously, that's just a minor character in the wood. I wouldn't even get in the least bit worked up about it. My ulitmate topped Studio Custom has a wicked marking on it. I thought briefly about rejecting it. Keyword there was briefly. It didn't happen. These are the things that make guitars unique and different from each other. As for Jol's comments about not doing redwood, well, all I can say is that he "dissed" the hell out of black korina/black limba/whateveryouwannacallit and they built a Standard with it. Its easier when you can accept that some of Jol's quotes are intended primarily for marketing purposes.
kizanski Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 As they say down in da bayou, "Dat's like pickin' gnat shit outta peppah."
silentman Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 His arm will be covering that. Or is this a museum piece? Wood is a natural thing full of 'imperfections'. I think Frank would have rejected that one if it wasn't up to standard.
Gabe Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 I'd ask customer service. However, the problem is that they will probably NOT believe what is clearly visible in the picture and request that the guitar be sent back to the factory, which will cost your friend at least $200 to and fro when sent the cheapest way. I had this with my Studio P-90 custom (See picture below, as is clearly visible there is no gold paint between the neck pickup and the neck). Maybe the dealer/importer should do what is expected from him to do and take care that the guitar is replaced by one without a flaw. I dislike BCRGregs answer that your friend should not buy guitars. Come on Greg, I'd expect better customer care from you (I know that Conrad's friend is not your customer, but suppose he was, would you tell him not to buy guitars???) Gabe
belgian Posted May 31, 2006 Author Posted May 31, 2006 Your friend shouldn't buy guitars. The guy is in fact the importer for Hamer for Belgium, Holland and Luxemburg. He ordered the redwood in fact as a showcase for what's the Hamer quality. It's in a way normal then he has a problem. I already proposed him to take it over from him for the HFC approved price.
Guest pirateflynn Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 It looks pretty minor.........I'd probably like it better that way.Let's see a picture fo the whole guitar, to put it in perspective.
JohnnyB Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 I think it's sort of like the mole on Cindy Crawford.
edgar_allan_poe Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 My Redwood Huber has that all over it. It looks great and is simply a quality of that particular wood. There is nothing wrong with it, and that is actually an exceptionaly clean piece of Redwood. Not really much figure to it though.
BCR Greg Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 I dislike BCRGregs answer that your friend should not buy guitars. Come on Greg, I'd expect better customer care from you (I know that Conrad's friend is not your customer, but suppose he was, would you tell him not to buy guitars???) Gabe, gimme a break. These things are made of wood. The very thing that we prize in wood is the imperfections when it's flame or quilt. Should he reject the guitar because the top isn't perfect like like white spruce? To get crazy about a tiny dark spot on a gorgeous piece of redwood is silly to me. Whether he's my customer or not is not the issue. If he WAS my customer, I WOULD say that to him. Really. These are guitars, not crystal.Really.I'll take that guitar if he doesn't want it.

kizanski Posted June 1, 2006 Posted June 1, 2006 That top is spalted maple and not black limba. True, but he actually dissed both. I believe "pallet wood" was the term he used.

I just thought that this was the guitar being referenced.
