I was reading the bio on this website...it says that Jol was out of Hamer from 1993 to 1997. Funnily enough, that's my favorite year groupings for Hamers. Coincidence?

Hope you're feeling better and mend fast, Brooks!

PSA: Hamer bass on ebay
crunchee replied to specialk's topic in For Sale - Wanted to Buy - PIF - eBay & Other PSAs
Damn, that's a looker! Of course, another auction ending in the middle of the workday... I'm curious, anybody know what kind of pickups those are? I'm guessing that the bridge is a EMG? Is it a passive or active P/U bass? Plus side, it's solid maple, easy to fix any blemishes, so I'm told. Negative side, no case plus I'd bet it'd be plenty bright sounding--a toss up depending on what you'd want. -
I once played around with the idea of putting a lefty Bigsby B-5 (the short, screws down on the top one) on a righty Eclipse--so I wouldn't have to worry too much about having the pickup switch or knobs in the way of the trem handle, or vice versa. Just a thought.

Famous last words: 'How can I be out of money? I still have checks left!' Cool scores, all! It is definitely a buyer's market out there.
-
His departure is probably as relevant as it was the first time he left. Does anybody remember what years those were? I can't tell from the quality of guitars that Hamer made during his absence--they were just as good quality-wise as what came before and after his return. As far as I can tell right now, his departure is a non-issue. Regards word-of-mouth advertising, that seems to me to have been the Hamer/Fender (possibly even before Fender got involved) game plan for the past few years, but that is yet another can of worms. If anything deep-sixes Hamer, it'll be due to the bean counters and upper management.
-
WOW! Congrats, hope it gives you many hours of playing enjoyment! Just curious, now that Jol's gone, are Standards with the 'proper' logo placement going to be an option, or better yet, permanent? Does anybody know?
-
Wow, stunning! I love the way they have the grain going along the headstock edge. Also, I don't think I've ever seen perfectly CURVED flame like this! But, for some reason, I suddenly have a craving for lime Jell-o.
-
Considering which ones to get.... I really like the logos on the picks--if Hamer ever does another Fan Club run, I vote for this logo on the headstock.
-
I'm curious, what did they say at the store when you asked them to actually test drive a few at higher volume--or wouldn't they let you? Don't they have the facilities to let anyone really TRY an amp, or are they just selling expensive furniture? I'd recommend trying a few at the volumes you're looking at before throwing cash down. You might change your mind.

More unsubstantiated bullshit. "Just like high school." Jesus, man. Get over it already. Kim was the one who made the factory jams happen. Can you imagine Jol lowering himself to schlepping gear? LOL! Please. \ I missed the first year because I was very ill. I was at every other one. don't like what i have to say read what stonge says. junior high is probably a better description. I saw you at one Jam Chris nothing I sad is bullshit or unsubstantiated. You guys must have interesting get-togethers. The last time I think I compared anything in life to high school or junior high was...in high school or junior high. That was roughly back when SNL was in it's first seasons. Having a military career took that out of my system pretty quickly.

+1 at what E.A.P. was saying. I remember reading about Jol criticizing the years where Hamer was trying to be everything to everybody (the early to mid '90's), when he wasn't there. Sounds to me like he wound up 'eliting' (or 'elite-ing') himself right out of Hamer. I wonder how long Hamer will stay commercially viable at this rate, just because it seems the only recent press (within a year or so) that Hamer has gotten has been right here at this Forum. I know about one dealer who carried new Hamers, he participated in the Triple Threat edition, but since Hamer went to 'order only', he's demoted (maybe that's too harsh a word, any suggestions?) Hamer on his website list to the 'misc. electric guitars' category instead of the previous brand name basis, since all he has are used ones now. P.S. I think Gibson does a 'upcharge' for white on many of their guitars (LP Custom, for instance), depending on the model.

I thought 'F spaced' meant string/pole spacing for a Fender-width bridge HB pickup. From what I've seen, a 'normal' spaced HB does fine in the neck position (many a Tele has this as a mod), but they're a little too narrow for a Fender bridge--the poles don't quite line up with the strings at the bridge. Correct me if I'm wrong, I've never needed to get a 'F spaced' HB.

I should clarify--I know about internet radio, I've used it in the past, but my habits are stuck in 1999. No excuse, I suppose, I should get new speakers for the computer. I HATE carrying a cellphone around, I have a work-related phobia about that, so no iPhone for me, thanks. If I was 20 again, I'd be like a pig in poop with all this technology, but I still look at some of it as a encumberance rather than something liberating. This quote from Ogden Nash tends to fit me: 'Middle age is when you're sitting at home on a Saturday night and the telephone rings and you hope it isn't for you.' Now, get off my lawn!

+1 to Thundernotes! I remember when Punk and New Wave hit, some was good, some was absolute crap--memories tend to be selective. I dunno, I think it (the clip) sounds familiar in a way. I've heard live early recordings of some popular bands before (I think most of us here have), where 90% of it sounded like crap and it was quickly put out of it's misery, but 10% sounded pretty good and gave a good hint of the direction they were going in. Hindsight is 20/20, of course. The only lament I have nowadays is that I don't have easy access to what's going on in the music world, except for mainstream outlets. I'm reduced to listening to 'World Cafe' on NPR for something that's different. One complaint I DO have...what's the difference between 'Bieber hair' and The Beatles' hair style, circa late '65? P.S. Speaking of Kiss being 'out there', anybody for Disco?

And that my friends is what is so mind boggling for former Hamer players like me. WTF??? Well, just look where Jol is now. OUT at Hamer. It would be naive to think that his attitude didn't have something to do with that, especially given Hamer's current status as a custom order shop only. +1. For years, I thought that the JB in the bridge, in my Hamers, was a little too trebly and shrill for my taste, and it was just me that thought this, and I was doing something wrong or wasn't using the right amp or right setting or something. Recent discussions here on the Forum seem to reinforce this, I'm glad that I'm not the only one! Time to get out the soldering iron... Now, if Hamer will just start doing Boomers upon request...

I was browsing at six string basses tonight on eBay and found this. Actually, the seller is doing a positive service by showing photos of actual wear, but it also makes me think that either the seller doesn't know what 'mint' means, or he hopes the buyer doesn't. http://cgi.ebay.com/CARVIN-6-STRING-BASS-H...=item519370bf0e I've seen descriptions of 'mint' misused so much on eBay, not just with instruments but other things--equipment, collectibles, clothing, you name it--that I seriously doubt the motive or knowledgeability of any seller anymore that uses that particular word, regardless whether it's used correctly or not. I'm posting this particular listing as an example of exactly what I mean. As MCChris says so often, 'eBay sucks'. I'm off my soapbox now.

Hmm...is Sebben Fitty the new Tree Fitty for Studio Customs? -
Occasionally something would come on MTV
crunchee replied to Feynman's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Oh yes, I remember that video (the Chris Isaac one) well! Nowadays, just SEEING a full video on MTV or VH1, without idiot commentary from a Z-list celebrity, or watching it at a civilized hour (early AM ain't it unless I just got in from a night out ) would stop me in my tracks. BTW, MTV has dropped 'Music Television' from it's logo, effective February of this year--now, it's just plain MTV. Not that it WAS 'Music Television' for the last decade... In a previous life, I was stationed in the UK (courtesy USAF) in the late '80's/early '90's, MTV Europe could get really interesting late at night, I remember this video in uncensored form (the brunette in the video was fully topless! Haven't found THAT version on Youtube yet): Ah, I miss the good old days, when you could just watch videos on TV, and everybody else did, too! I've read that most people under 30 get their music videos via online searches & sites. Frankly, I don't have that much time in the day, or the patience, to surf the web constantly. -
WOW! Masterful work! Just curious Greg, has anybody ever asked you for help in 'moving' the Hamer logo on Standards to their 'proper' place at the end of the headstock? I can guess what the answer was...
-
I like W'IT because of the cherry back (I think Amberburst, or Aztec Gold transparent on mahogany is kinda bland, but great on figured maple)--otherwise I vote for Jazzburst.

Speaking of 'live' performances... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1uHWyQHMK0...feature=related

Had a great time on the phone with Paul Hamer today.
crunchee replied to BCR Greg's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
wait ~ is that wishing for Paul or someone that just took a shot of Jager? It's hard to tell. I'm guessing too many peppers in the Thai food, and now there's trouble on the outbound flight. "Honey? Bring me a Popsicle!" G.E. Smith impression? -
2005 Studio Custom on eBay
crunchee replied to crunchee's topic in For Sale - Wanted to Buy - PIF - eBay & Other PSAs
Ah, now it makes sense to me! I just would've never expected them on a Studio with that type of mounting.
