Victor (Fret Friend) Posted September 5, 2024 Posted September 5, 2024 That's a lot of money with de-Kahlering of that quality (not great). With a better match/finish maybe but...
DaveL Posted September 5, 2024 Posted September 5, 2024 I am pretty sure I owned that guitar in the 90's. If it's the same one, I think the original ship date was 8/28/81 or 82? I found it for $225 in the Want Advertiser (a print version of craigslist or the recycler in the Boston area) I later sold it for $350... I made bank! not... one of my many stupid moves to come. I despised the kahler so much (it had a wierd black plate to cover the stop tail holes), it just ruined it for me This was a couple years before the HFC. Had I known, I would have gone with a nice veneer with vintage correct curly maple rather than a patch... I remember there was alot of chipping at the headstock where the kahler nut was, I will say it looks alot better than it used to...
79Sunburst Posted September 5, 2024 Author Posted September 5, 2024 If I owned that guitar with all the visible repairs made to it. I would have the fingerboard removed and replace it with an ebony board bound and crowned and simply have it refinished black. Had it never been Kahlered, I wouldn't have done anything at all to it.

Eli Posted September 9, 2024 Posted September 9, 2024 That Kahler repair is so less than great, it makes me want to put a Kahler back on it!
crunchee Posted September 9, 2024 Posted September 9, 2024 Seller is Galaxy Music Company in CA, huh? The asking price is astronomical for sure!

Yep, and for that money they should have first filled in the hole with a billet of mahogany, replaced the entire veneer top, and reshot it in Transparent Red.

There's another picture on the sellers page with a closeup of the bridge area. You can see the lack of quality work done in that pic. Also: 4-digit Hamer guitars and basses had wider spaced dot markers on the 12th fret. So it could have been either a fretboard replacement, or maybe they ran out of the older fretboards?

Sunbursts also stopped using the wide octave dots after ‘79. I believe it was the same across the brand.

I guess the owner or the seller opted for the cheapest repair, and mechanically its a perfectly acceptable repair but: https://reverb.com/item/80755315-hamer-standard-1982-red-4-digit?utm_campaign=listing&utm_content=80755315&utm_medium=android-share&utm_source=android-app this workmanship to me, doesn't warranty a $8,699.00 price tag. I don't know enough about the Sunbursts to say what the timeline was I was only referring to the 4-digit guitars/basses. But yeah they still had the wide spaced dots in 1981 at least: https://www.hamerfanclub.com/forums/attachments/
cmatthes Posted September 10, 2024 Posted September 10, 2024 Take off $2500 for lack of original HSC. That's a mid-2000s case.

And no "USA" after Hamer Lucky for me I still have the original flight case and receipt that says #0531 came from Hamer in a Calzone case.😁 Unluckily for me, #0531 isn't a guitar.

Yes it was on the Starship Enterprise and just came back from a 5 year mission. https://www.americanrhetoric.com/MovieSpeeches/startrekintro.html The crew signed the back of the control cover.

I don't believe this guitar was posted prior to last year, however, I could be wrong. I wonder who did the refin? Hamerica

Hamerica yes, I called into Hamer at the time and spoke to Jim Allen, I remember that date was my wedding anniversary, my first one... lol. at the time, I thought it had what looked like the original case...
bry4321 Posted September 10, 2024 Posted September 10, 2024 I think whenever someone says “that price is outrageous” they should be required to offer something equally cool for a lower price 🤣🤘 It is helpful to see what people think things are worth though to be honest. 😇
