I don't need permission but I always tell her, yeah I'm thinking of getting this and she is always cool with it.

Most of the time if I buy something new, I sell something to offset the costs anyway.

I have to deal with three daughters, that's worse than a wife.

Those 3 girls must be very understanding.............considering the BEAUTIES you keep pulling in!

My wife doesn't much care for my music hobby, so I don't make many purchases. When I do, it comes out of money raised from selling some other piece of gear. When I was gigging, I bought more stuff and paid for it with gig money. Now, I'm just a bedroom wanker who doesn't need much stuff anyway. Someday, though, I'd love to have a TLE Custom and a Valvetech amp. Of course, home improvements and braces for my daughter and college tuition and credit card bills and automobile expenses and medical expenses and on and on and on are going to be taking my money for quite some time.

The old blade doesnt give me any trouble when i buy gee tars... half the time she points at one and goes i like that one go git it... the other half is omg you bought that?.... either way i have the support from my wife knowing full well that it WILL get played and used .... and the fact im going to be buried with them.

BUT

always budget yer money and remember the wife and kids are more important than any material component...

and with that being said... time to order another 12 string ...... after I move that is...

I don't need my wife's permission but I always let her know if I'm planning a new acquisition. Anyhow, these days it's one in, one out approach to guitar buying.

In our house, I'm usually the one who wants a new instrument (bass), but since Carmie plays guitar, she understands and appreciates the reason for my interest. She's very supportive, and sometimes she ends up getting a new guitar too like the "Extra Special" we (She) acquired this past weekend. It's cool when both of you love guitars. :(

Our setup is similar to Badger Dave's.

Yup, ours too.

When I met my wife in the late 80's I had cars squirreled away all over the place. I got out of that that when the sportscar market went through the roof, and started collecting pinball machines.... So she knew what she was getting into right up front :( LOL!

About 6 months ago I wanted to buy this old scruffy Marshall 4x12 straight cab to complete my 77 stack, I was a little short at the time, she loaned me the cash. I think I picked the right gal...

Who was the sage HFC-er that coined the expression, "It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission"?

Genius.

I did'nt "coin" the phrase but Quoted so..that would be me...I have lived by that phrase but then again...I'M DIVORCED!!!!! hehe :(

Years ago, I had to sell one of my vintage Les Paul Sunbursts to get through a tough time. My then girlfriend(now wife) Kristin told me "We'll get you another one, don't worry".

She helped my aquisition of my guitar store, she being the CPA, I being the tool user.

All thing being said, she has me on the "One in, one out" rule.

There have been times when a recent Hamer left the vault and another vintage Gibson entered. One in, one out!

As to the phrase "'Tis easier to get forgiveness than permission", my grandfather (who had just bought a new car) said that to me when I was young. He was the smartest man to ever walk the earth.

My wife and I have incomes that are close to equal. We decided long ago to maintain completely separate bank accounts. Any major household purchase or expense is split 50/50 after we decide to spend the money. I pay the mortgage every month. She pays all of the grocery, utility and miscellanious expenses.

Our checking, savings, retirement and and discretionary accounts are completely separate. We do some joint retirement planning, but we don't combine funds.

IMO, this is a near utopian way to run a household. I have never asked her permission to buy a guitar, car, or anything else. I'll occasionaly ask for her input, but she doesn't get a veto. Same for her - she uses her money to buy what she wants and never even thinks about asking permission. As a result, we haven't had an argument about money in 15 years!

As for guitars, she is mildly interested in what comes in and out. All of my guitars and basses are displayed in our home - 5 in the family room and the rest in a basement room that I finished as a "guitar room".

Good lord! You just described MY guitar/money/wife situation TO THE LETTER!

(Must be a Wisconsin thing.)

When I met my wife I had aquired a collection of 12 Charvel's and was starting to make the jump into vintage instrument's, Flying V's, Hamer's, Les Paul's. After 5 years of not being able of keeping a tab of

what was new and what was old, and coming home too, "I wonder what's in that box" I have been leashed.

;) 1 Major buy a year, and I cashed in on a 4 digit, I think that was March/April. Come on 2007!!!!

I NEED A HIT LIKE A CRACK ADDICT NEEDS A HIT!!!!, if you know what I mean.

I always show my wife a picture of some REAL expensive guitar (or other gear), tell her the price, then tell her the one I REALLY want can be had for 1/4 of that.

It used to work better. I think she's catching on..... ;)

My wife has wanted me to buy a Monaco bass for about 1-1/2 years, and an acoustic upright bass, too.

I say I need to get more back in the habit of playing, and get rid of some gear to make space for a doghouse bass if that's the direction I go.

She's totally wonderful.

But the wife is the neck.

And when the neck says "No" then the head is inclined to be shaking with the neck!?!!

Gabe ;)

P.S.: I have no complaints about the neck, it doesn't shake too often. ;)

It's not so much asking permission as to find out what else is in store for the income. We are a single income two child family. So basically the only toy buying, since I don't actually earn any money with the guitars, is usually for the kids. I can sometimes supplement a purchase by selling vacation time, but that only screws me over if I ever leave my place of employment.
