DavidE Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I heard that Elliot Easton quit Creedence Clearwater Revisited (what a joke that was - no credibility without the man behind CCR) in order to make time for a Cars reunion. Now, I'll probably go see the show, but the Cars without Ben Orr? Who's gonna sing one of their best songs, Drive? He had a killer voice and it will be missed.
Scottcrud Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 How is there going to be a Cars reunion without Ben Orr? He sang a lot of songs, Candy-O, Drive, ummhh, ok what else did he sing?
edgar_allan_poe Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I'll do it....(Poe sits and waits for the call)
Jack C Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I always thought Ben Orr sounded a lot like Ocasek...Edit: I just noticed that it says "advanced member" under David's name. Heh.
serial Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I thought Ocasek sang "Candy-O". That's one of my favorite Cars tunes. I gotta get that on cd someday. My vinyl, tapes and all of my 45s from that LP are pretty much shot (well, not the 45s).I spoke to Elliot about this time last year on the phone and he was telling me about the Hamer korina Artist he was having made. He was unsure as to what pickups he was going to put into it. He actually asked me if what I thought. I laughed. "Elliot Easton, one of my all-time guitar heroes (Definitely top 5) is asking me ANY guitar-related question?!" He was very nice.
HamStd Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 And you recommend EMGs for it right Steve??? Just kidding.Peter.
Mr Fuzzy Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I saw the Cars a few times at their peak back in the early 80's and honestly they were kind of boring live. I was very disappointed.I can't see how a reunion would be any better without Ben Orr. (their best singer IMHO)Elliot Easton is a damn fine guitar player though.
serial Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 EMGs AND I told him to cover up that unsightly yellow wood with baby blue opaque paint.
MCChris Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I saw the Cars a few times at their peak back in the early 80's and honestly they were kind of boring live. I saw 'em on the Heartbeat City tour. "Wooden" doesn't even begin to describe their stage presence. In terms of energy, Wang Chung (the opener) blew 'em off the stage. Pretty much says it all right there.
Brewmaster Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I agree with the sentiment on all sides, without Ben Orr there is no reunion and they did suck live. Their albums however are another story. Lots of fun diddies. Oh yeah, Ben Orr also sang lead vocals on "Just What I needed"
Scottcrud Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I saw that tour, they sounded just like the record, and did not move at all except for Elliot Easton would walk around in a circle, he was badass, I was 16 and got extremely stoned out of my mind that night, I think one of the joints was lace with pcp, After I passed out, I woke up back in the driveway of my best freinds parents house. Went inside poured myself a bowl of cornflakes and sat down and ate it, only it wan't cornflakes, it was fritos cornchips, that's right, I poured milk over cornchips and ate them, while my best friend and his mom watched. There is a lot of the story I'm leaving out as well.
DaveL Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 A good week for Beantown! The J.Geils band is also reforming...
jwhitcomb3 Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 It would be cool if they reunite to record. I never saw them live, but the various live recordings I've heard weren't wonderful.Nothing wrong with being a great recording band though!-Jonathan

Wooden stage presence for the Cars is a dead on description for my memory of them.Wow! The J.Geils band is reforming. Now I recall them as being a great live band. That is a show I would like to catch.
Phloored Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 "Wow! The J.Geils band is reforming. No I recall them as being a great live band. That is a show I would like to catch."Hell ya! J Geils was a most excellent party, second only to NRBQ. NRBQ would do this stint at a local Ho Jo's and the parties were legendary. I mis big Al.
Brooks Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 i saw the cars ~1980, panorama tour, a real yawn fest.it was my 2nd concert ever, i was in jr high, and i was STILL bored.

gregc Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I loved the Cars music but they were absolutely 'nothing' to see. Yer better off putting the vinly on the table and watching it spin. I hope they release something new at least. They werre a good band in a time where there were a real lot of bad bands being sold.gregc

Smakutus Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 I saw the Wang Chang/Cars tour too.. On all the then new Cars tunes the background vocals sounded just like the record, but on all the older tunes they sounded like shit.. Hmmmm?I'd love to hear some new J. Geils. They totally screwed the pooch when they broke up. They're the one band I never saw live that I wish I had back then..out..Jeff.
rmahurin Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 My mom still has my old tour shirt -- On The Road 1980 - black with a white tire track up the back.
DEMENTED Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 "I saw the Cars a few times at their peak back in the early 80's and honestly they were kind of boring live. I was very disappointed.". I saw The Cars in '82 with Nick Lowe opening. While it is true they were boring to watch, the sound was amazing. I have read that they were absolutely horrible live before they had an album out and they were really only good at putting it together in the studio. It is also rumored that the record company put them up in a rehearsal space in Boston so they could play "live" together and try to make it seem like they were a "band" with some sort of stageshow. You , woodshedding to be able to tour in support of your new album.I really like The Cars by the way.
alpep Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 I met eliott easton a few times in the early ninties at some of the NY guitar shows. somewhere there is a pic of us together. he seemed like a nice guy.
DavidF Posted March 4, 2005 Posted March 4, 2005 The J. Geils reunion was a one night gig to raise money for Cam Neely's charity. It was $2500 a pop to get in and, from what I read, was well attended by celebrities.
