BTW ...Whoever thinks anybody can tell Tom Petty to do anything knows nothing of his history. " I Won't Back Down" is more than a song, it is his Credo.

Which is exactly why I expected more.

my $0.02 (ya knew it was coming). If you are a fan of TP & Co, you loved it. If you are not a fan, it was boring. I'm a fan, I loved it. I must concede that on the close-ups of Petty's face he looked like he has aged a ton over the last couple years. Perhaps, the nonstop touring has caught up with him.

Perhaps, the nonstop touring has caught up with him.

Or, perhaps the fact that he's 57 has caught up with him.

This is true!

Touching on David E's comment above - I was a little surprised this AM when I tried to buy tickets for the show at Nissan in June. Tom "This Record is $9.95" Petty and the Heartbreakers tix would have set me back $500 for 4 average seats in the pavillion. Seats in the first 15 rows were $291 + Ticketmonster fees of $18.75 per ticket.

He's one of the better acts to see live, but I'll probably pass on paying those prices this time around.

$291 per? Holy crap.

Yeah, but in all fairness, I think that includes a t-shirt.

I'm sorry, but what the hell is "fair" about any of that????? Wow.

They're cheaper than Hannah Montana tickets. How's that?

I'm guessing that TP will not help his ticket sales with that performance which is too bad since I'm such a fan. He's always had a killer band with one of the best side men ever, such a cool sound, such great songs, such a great rock n' roll attitude without ever being stupid. I mean seriously, he was good enough to be a freakin' travelin' Wilbury!

An AP story:

Tom Petty Plays It Cool at Super Bowl

By DERRIK J. LANG – 12 hours ago

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' surprisingly subdued Super Bowl halftime show was as uncomplicated in person as it looked on television. There were no wardrobe — or any other kind — of malfunctions.

Moments before the performance, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers calmly waited on the Patriots' side of the field. Once given the go signal, the musicians quickly took the stage, picked up their instruments and started performing. They made playing a concert for about 100 million people look almost effortless.

On the field, it was impossible to tell that the illuminated stage was heart shaped or that a large arrow was headed straight for it at the beginning of Petty's by-the-book rendition of "American Girl." The visual effect wasn't broadcast on the jumbotron. There were other illusions at play, too.

That cross-sectioned crowd of moms, dads and teenagers didn't descend from the stands to spontaneously rock out at Petty's feet. No, they had been assembled just outside of the University of Phoenix Stadium, waiting for their moment on the field since the start of the game in a long line reminiscent of an "American Idol" audition.

However, the audience did actually sing-along when Petty launched into "I Won't Back Down." That wasn't fake, although the screens featuring the words behind Petty seemed slightly unnecessary. Everyone sang like they already knew them.

When the stadium lights dimmed for "Free Fallin,'" those weren't lighters the audience just happened to have in their pockets, ready to whip out in unison for some groovy ambiance. They were actually tiny flashlights that had been previously distributed among the crowd. Hey, free souvenir!

The most spontaneous moment during the halftime performance didn't even make it on TV — and it probably happens every year. After Petty closed the halftime show with "Runnin' Down A Dream," the mob assembled around the stage confusingly ran off in all directions as stagehands frantically disassembled the stage at the same time.

It was the craziest part of the whole evening — except for the part when the Giants won.

Hangover kiz?

Yea - the good kind.

If there's one bad memory from Superbowl XVII, it's that Dance of the Living Dead band that played during half time.

Granted he wrote/writes great songs. He was still boring as hell at the Super Bowl.

Yeah, I'm a fan, loved the documentary but thought it was too subdued.

I like TP. Good band, good tunes, etc. But I could never understand why that band got inducted into the Rock Hall. The music is more derivative than innovative. Give me The Byrds any day.

Still, TP is on TV and I'm not.

wow, you guys are harsh! i thought they were great.

they have never been a head-banging running laps around the stage guitar smashing act,

just watch some 70's footage. they don't have to jump around like kiss, they've always had a cool laid back vibe. the tunes do the talking, i think they rule. if you haven't checked out the new "running down a dream" dvd, do it.

Amen brother, I thought they were great! The mix was good this year too.

That's the point, though. You can like their music all day long, but to hype up the Superbowl half time "celebration extravaganza" and then cart out Boris Karloff and the Crypt Kicker 5 is not a good fit.

I don't want to return to the days of Spears, Jackson, and the boy bands slinging their sugary shit all over my TV, but there should be something visual going on.

I like TP. When his songs come on the radio I usually turn them up. He is a quality song writer and the band members are excellent muscians. But if you ever expect me to pay money to see him in concert after that super bowl show, forget it. I have seen more enthusiam from wedding bands or lounge acts.

I have always been a huge fan...shoot, my late older brother used to go watch TP play for free in Gainesville, FLA parking lots back before the day...killer tunes, killer musicianship, but.........

no energy.

I know TP has never been a run around the stage type, but all the non-musician types I talked to said "I love his songs, but man that was just boring..."

I wish he would've played "Refugee", "I Need Tio Know", or somenthing a bit more rockin'!

"American Girl" was cool.

Breaks my heart to say this but that performance guaranteed I'm not puttin' out $55-110 per to see him at the Sprint Center in KC this summer.

But I LOVED seeing him playing that Ric!
