Russ Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Middle aged guy here, been playing for 30 years. Gear has come and gone, and come and gone. About 2 years ago, I stumbled across what I perceived as a great price on a very gently used 95 Studio in blue, with a pair of '59s. INSTANTLY, that guitar took over my #1 spot (bumping an "old factory" PRS Custom 24). It being my first Hamer, I just "assumed" it was a fluke guitar. I mean, how can I pick up an under a grand guitar that plays and sounds like this? About a year later, another deal presented itself, on an 00 Artist Korina P90s, so I jumped. The ONLY thing keeping that one out of the top 2 was that the pickups are just a tad too noisy on stage. Playability and tone, just phenomenal. A few weeks back, with a few idle moments at work, I stumble across an absolutely gorgeous Mirage II, and I POUNCED. The very next gig, I brought her out, and, just couldn't put it down. Haven't decided if it's the new #1 or not yet, but, it IS in the top 2!tried uploading some pics, but got a permissions error. I'll find some I have hosted and add 'em later.
edgar_allan_poe Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 You have to put the pics up on a site like Photobucket.com and then link them. The size limit for uploading pics is very small. Welcome to the family.
Guest pirateflynn Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Hey, that sounds great! Welcome and let's see some pics.
Feynman Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Welcome! Pics ASAP, please. USA Hamers are amazing bargains are they not?
JGale Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Take a look at the Dimarzio DLX-90s for a P90 swap.
Russ Posted September 5, 2008 Author Posted September 5, 2008 Here's the studio... And the Mirage II... I've got some "in use" pics at the band website ( www.etownexpress.com ) and on my myspace page ( www.myspace.com/russtheguitarguy/ ). I'll see what others I have handy scattered around. Appreciate the info on the P90s. I "love" em as they are at home through my Palomino V32, so don't know if I'll swap em out or not. Info stored though, thanks.
Jimbilly Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Welcome!, You've got a good start on a real collection going there!
ArnieZ Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 WelcomeNice diversity in your Hamers so far...but there is much yet to discover!ArnieZ
Russ Posted September 5, 2008 Author Posted September 5, 2008 Thanks...There WILL be more...But, the pockets are not bottomless...I've got a few years left in me. I'm eyeballing a few right now, one an Artist Ultimate, not too dissimilar from that sig pic...(more orange though)
Bloozguy Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Great looking guitars!...and welcome to the family! Just remember that you have started something for which there is no 12-step program!+1 on the DLX-90. I have a Vanguard with one DLX-90 and one Virtual P90 in it and they're quiet and they sound good...but nothing matches a real P90 if you can deal with the noise.
tomteriffic Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Beautiful Wraptail Studio! did that come from a shop in or near NYC? It looks Like one I drooled on.
atquinn Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Nice looking guitars! And 3 already! Looks like you'll fit in fine -Austin
Russ Posted September 5, 2008 Author Posted September 5, 2008 Thank you...It could very well have been in a NYC shop. Got it from a guy in Albany, who makes frequent "purchasing pilgrimages" down that way. I was a little skeptical on the wraparound, for like 2 seconds. Just an all around incredible guitar. I'm way overdue to take insurance photos of the "inventory", hopefully over the next couple of weeks I'll make some time to do so, and post some pics that do justice to the stuff (I clearly won't bore you guys with the PRS, the Parker, the Tele, the Carvins, or the basses and acoustics) (yeah, this isn't a recently acquired illness).
silentman Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Wraptail studios are the shiz. Well now that you have found some enablers, you'll increase your hamer stable much faster then 3 in 2 years, I can tell you that.
veatch Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Welcome aboard! Three Hamers are a nice start, but i'm sure you can do better. I double dog dare ya'! The Virt P90s are nice, but i agree with Bloozguy - stick with the real deal if you can. I have a pair of Rio Grandes in the 00 Artist Korina here, BluesBar/JazzBar. The JazzBar is RWRP, so between songs, i flip to the middle position, and the guitar is quiet enough. I've only compared these to the stock SDs so far, and the RGs are a huge step up to my tastes. But opinions vary, so trust yer own ears.
hamerhead Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 I love the blue Studio. Killer guitar.....And your sickness has just begun. Hide your wallet!!Welcome aboard!
BubbaVO Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Awesome start. The guitars alone suck you in. THen this place feeds the addiction. Totally sick. Welcome.
Russ Posted September 5, 2008 Author Posted September 5, 2008 Guess I should have lurked for a while first. I figured this would be like an AA type of place. Hi, I'm Russ, and I love Hamer guitars...I haven't purchased one in 84 days... Fueling the fire is NOT something I need help with. Yes, there are many many (many) folks with collections to put my paltry 15 total to shame, but, ...I WAS headed somewhere... Oh yeah...Appreciate the warm welcome and words of encouragement...
BTMN Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Welcome!!! Hi I'm BTMN(Gene) and I haven't purchased a Hamer in 7 days. See other thread.......

Those pickups in that guitar are just right. My first Hamer was an Archtop GT that had the stock hot Duncan P-90's and while it was fun, they were too hot and too noisy. But one of the great features of Hamers are really well voiced volume and tone controls, so make sure you work those before swapping out. Hamers also seem very responsive to different types and gauges of strings, so that's another very cheap alternative to swapping guitars or pickups.Oh, and welcome!-Jonathan
Bloozguy Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Hi I'm BTMN(Gene) and I haven't purchased a Hamer in 7 days. Hi I'm Bloozguy (Ray) and I haven't purchased a Hamer in 4 days...I'm hoping that I won't start thinking about what's next at least until this one arrives! My first Hamer was an Archtop GT that had the stock hot Duncan P-90's and while it was fun, they were too hot and too noisy. I put underwound Fralin P-90's in my Archtop GT and they sound great. Not nearly as hot at the stock Duncans but still plenty of that wonderful P-90 grind when you want it.

What Carvin's do you have?
belgian Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Welcome Russ ! Stay away from the "for sale" part of this board. Believe me, it isn't healthy over there.
Russ Posted September 7, 2008 Author Posted September 7, 2008 Ted, I've got a '92 DC135 Koa, and an 05 C66 (HSH, Mahogany body, flamed maple cap, maple neck, birdseye maple fretboard, no inlays, vintage yellow finish). Also, one of their B4 basses in pearl silver. The DC135 has been in parts for pushing 4 years now, waiting for me to get around to applying some fresh tung oil (my money's on 'it ain't gonna happen'). The C66 is actually for sale at the moment (to fund another Hamer), however I don't seem to be getting many bites on it (only have it posted on 2 small boards though, I imagine if I flung it on TGP, it would move quickly, gorgeous guitar). Pics of it RIGHT HERE The B4 I'll never get rid of, as it's quite light (under 8 lbs), solid, and sounds freaking awesome. It's only been out of the case twice in the last 2 years, but, that's only because I've been gigging on the skinny strings for those years. And I've "skimmed" though the for sale section...Will try and stay out until buying funds are replenished.
