cmatthes Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 They're not for me, but if you like yours, that's fine. I've played some I really liked, but 99% of them look either overdone, forumlaic or the wear is nothing like I've seen in three decades of handling a LOT of vintage guitars.
Jason01 Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 So far nobody has been able to answer the question- if you ding your relic guitar is it worth more or less? From a buying and selling standpoint a relic would seem to hold value better than a brand new looking guitar if you actually took it out and played it and dinged it? I can see the point on wearing down the edges of the fretboard and stuff but why ding them all up? Then again, I never bought ripped jeans either.
Mindseyes Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Ill buy a used guitar that looks fucked up and has been playedBut I will not buy a new fucked up guitar!!!!!!I remember the days when you could get the guys at the music store to nock a few bucks off the price because the guitar had some scratches on it, now they wanna charge more for it.........hell no!!!!To each their own!
DaveL Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 If it makes people happy, who really cares... I don't think it's any sillier than Hamer cutting 30 pieces of abalone inlay to make it around the corner of a cutaway.
DavidE Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Ill buy a used guitar that looks fucked up and has been playedBut I will not buy a new fucked up guitar!!!!!!So, is it ok to buy a used relic?
Hamer of the gods Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 The gimmick factor of relics notwithstanding, the ones that I have played with few exceptions have been amazing guitars sonically as well as visually. Some I have seen have unusual wear or are overdone, but the ones I own personally I think look and sound pretty authentic.
sw686blue Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I'm really not a fan of relicing new guitars. I can see only 2 reasons why I would do it. 1) Put in a few dings so that I don't worry about taking it out to play.2) Render the neck feel as if it has been broken-in after years of playing.
JGale Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Relicing only counts with horseshoes and telecasters!
ac15 Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 For those of you who think the relic thing is ridiculous, you may appreciate this:http://www.themusiczoo.com/preowned/Fender...g_CF674_PO.html

JES1680 Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I'm always amazed at these threads. 1. It's a finish on a guitar. It could just as easily be hot pink sparkle. 2. I'm amazed at the number of people who get offended at the idea of a relic guitar. Don't like = Don't buy. It's not like these are puppies that are being beaten it's a piece of wood. 3. If you take your new poly coated guitar and play it for 20 years it ain't gonna get worn like a relice'd lacquer guitar. 4. Does anyone really think that people are buying these to pose as a rocker that's been around and played in dive bars for years??? Really?? Personally a worn guitar played by anyone doesn't give them "cred". If I played and releiced my own guitar the "natural" way in bars for the last 25 years I'd still sound like SHIT!5. I believe the major draw to most relics is that they don't feel like a new guitar. They feel worn in. Some people like that and can't afford a vintage Fender with all the finish naturally worn off the neck. They also may not have another 20-30 years to get a new guitar to that point. 6. I have one relic guitar that was done by our own Roy B. It's an amazing instrument regardless of the finish, it blows my naturally reliced 66 Tele out of the water. Play, Feel, Sound and a distant looks... are what drives me to buy a guitar. YMMV.
hamerican gigolo Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I own two " reliced " guitars. Love them to pieces. As far as the anti-relicers are concerned, can't we all just get along?
sw686blue Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 As far as the anti-relicers are concerned, can't we all just get along? No!
hamerican gigolo Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 HFC has relic bashing threads also? I would never have imagined it. Any guitar can be great or suck, it all depends on the individual instrument. BTW, I have 3 relics and 3 normal guitars, I buy and keep what ever sounds the best, nothing else matters.+1. It all depends on the intent behind the purchase. If you bought the guitar because you bonded with it, that's fine. If you bought the guitar because of a collectibility factor, that's fine too. If you bought the guitar to portray yourself as someone you're not, i.e. someone who busted up the guitar by playing the shit out of it a hundred times a year on some of the shittiest stages in the country, that's lame.Don't you find it amazing that others have the gall to ? your gear purchases & the reasons thereof? With all due respect, feel free to front me the $,then i will be glad to buy whatever you deem suitable.Have a pleasant day!
santellavision Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I was just thinking of Relic'ing my Huber. It just looks... too new. What do you guys think? Just kidding!
Mindseyes Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I was just thinking of Relic'ing my Huber. It just looks... too new. What do you guys think? Just kidding! Well it would be cheaper than if you would have had them do it.....LOL With Huber that prolly would have been like a 3K upcharge.......... Ha!........i like yours unrelicked!
santellavision Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I was just kiddin'. Works of art shouldn't be messed with.
HSB0531 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I think the whole relic thing is literally insane. If I spend (and I have) big $$ on a bass, I expect it to LOOK flawless as well as play & sound exactly to my liking.I'm the one who gets to nick, dent, & scratch the thing...if I choose.
Travis Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I was just thinking of Relic'ing my Huber. It just looks... too new. What do you guys think? Just kidding! I'll do it for ya....cheap.
Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 It seems like you can make a guitar that looks new/flawless, yet still has the worn-in feel in the neck.As far as the sound is concerned, the vintage sound comes from the materials used, but also from years of aging and playing. ABSOLUTELY NOT from the appearance. There is no way to relic a brand-new guitar to sound like a vintage guitar any more than a new-looking brand-new guitar. So it seems clear that those who buy relic-ized guitars are not buying them for the sound. And while it may be for the "feel", it is unlikely to be for the "feel" alone, since we've already established you could have the feel without the old appearance. So maybe the anti-relic side is jumping to conclusions about the motivations of people who buy them.I admit, it seems to me that if all that matters is *really* just the sound and feel, you can find it for much cheaper on a guitar that actually looks as new as it is.But that's not important, really.Bottom line: If you *really* love your relic'd for the sound/feel only, and the accusations of "poseur" really aren't accurate, why let it bother you so much?
santellavision Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Besides guitars, Fender has Relic'd amps too.
Jason01 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Oh good, I can call my 4x12 "reliced" now and charge more!
DavidE Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 "Bottom line: If you *really* love your relic'd for the sound/feel only, and the accusations of "poseur" really aren't accurate, why let it bother you so much?"I really think that the relics bother the anti-relic crowd more than anything. Frankly, the insults are often over the top and discouraging. Rather than letting people like what they like on such an inconsequential issue, the anti-relic people take a holier than thou "I'm right and you're wrong" attitude and often get down right mean, insulting and well... they act like complete assholes. I think those reliced amps look cool.
Travis Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Well, I would never buy a new guitar that had been relic'd. I have no problems buying an old beater. However, I could care less what other people spend their money on. If they want a relic'd guitar and it makes them happy, who am I to piss in their Cheerios?
guitarzandstuff Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 I do own some relics and I like the look! I'm allowed!! To each his own...
