lesterpaul Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Little Jimmy Dickens -- Raggedy AnnLittle Jimmy Dickens -- Letter To SantaRicky Van Shelton -- Life Turned Her That Way (originally done by Little Jimmy Dickens) Warning: Listening to Little Jimmy Dickens while consuming alcohol can lead to suicide...haaa!!Little JD was in Tootsie's(Nashvegas) one afternoon while I was playing in the back room-he walked in and my partner actually knew a LJD song...he said, "get in E.."..we did it..and LJD walked to the front of the stage...didnt even move...dropped a 20 into the jar and out the door he went..all dressed up in that flashy suit!...another sad one-"Pick Me Up"..Ryan "Don't Call me Bryan" Adams...not really sad, but it has a yearning, wistful, wan ,melancholy, etc vibe
zorrow Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 More from Freddie: Freddie Mercury - (if you ever had a short-lived, high-intensity love affair, this one should sound quite sad to your ears )Freddie Mercury - Queen - (more pathetic than sad, but well...)Freddie Mercury - (Again, more pathetic than sad. BTW, I know it's The Platters', but Freddie nails it the right way IMHO)
BlueRedWhite Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 1. Queen's "Love of my Life" is sad and beautiful...but mainly sad2. Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" in any of its versions3. Clapton's "Tears in Heaven"...because of what inspired it...4. The saddest one: Johny Cash "Hurt" (it is a cover of Nine Inch Nails, but watch his video on youtube)
tomteriffic Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Saddest song I know;It Makes No Difference / The Band
specialk Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 Wow.... Thanks to all of you for these great suggestions! Some are in iTunes already, some I know and forgot about, and more than a few I'd never heard of but will be checking out! Steve, thanks for the links. My wife is a big Ricky Van fan! My personal choice for saddest song ever? He Stopped Loving Her Today by George Jones. Besides the country, a few in there that haven't been mentioned are: Sad And Deep As You by Dave Mason He Went To Paris by Jimmy Buffett The Rose by Bette Midler Seven Spanish Angels by Willie Nelson & Ray Charles Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper Family Line by Laurie Morvan Again, everyone... THANKS! (now keep the razor blades away from me, )

lesterpaul Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 "the drugs don't work"..The Verve...covered by Ben Harper.....WHAT?....THE DRUGS DON'T WORK??? ...talk about sad....
Uncle Thor's Hamer Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 If this one doesn't break your heart, nothing will. Scabs by Scarlet LaceAll about sad, Ode by Scarlet Lace I haven't quite figured out what all this one means, but it is sad. Capo 6 by Scarlet LaceThose are my daughter's duo playing some originals live.It Hurts to Play the Blues This is my daughter singing one of my songs. It was an attempt at a BB King style song, though I don't claim that the solo does any credit to Mr. King. All are set up as free downloads for HFC members for a few days.
Bass Guy Dave Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 Don't know if it was intended as 'sad' per se, but Simon & Garfunkle's "Only Living boy in NY" is about the most haunting song i've heard... One of my favorite lyrical ones is Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" Also really liked "She's Gone Away" by King's X for a meloncholy thing Interesting thread.
Punkavenger Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 most Nick Drake ... Elliot Smith has got some good ones ... Mazzy Star, Portisehead ... Leonard Cohen ... The Cure, of course. edited to add "and most versions of "Long Black Veil"
Moose Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 s ... Mazzy Star, Portisehead ... If you enjoy down-tempo, you should have all of Dummy there, anyway. It's THE quintessential trip-hop album. But, for sad songs, at least Roads. Possibly Glory Box just to remind you how nutty women think, though it's less sad and more longing.Someone said Radiohead before -- Fake Plastic Trees, High and Dry, and Bulletproof...I Wish I Was are great sad ones. Granted, most of High and Dry doesn't make any sense, but you only remember the lyric "you just sit there wishing you could still make love" anyway.
Brooks Posted July 7, 2009 Posted July 7, 2009 saddest song ever;Waiting Around to Die, by Townes Van Zandt
