zorrow Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 I wanted a Korina V and I was also caressing the idea of getting a Dean guitar. Suddenly, a Czech-made beauty arrives and it's a Dean V and... it's Korina too! And what do I do? Well, I grab it without hesitation! So, meet now my new acquisition --BTW, inspected and approved by no other than Nick himself! Enjoy! Cool, isn't it?
specialk Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Very cool. How does it feel/sound compared to a Hamer V?
lord nelson Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Looks great! The czechs have C-necks right?
Ted Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Way to go Z! Yeah, How does she perform compared to a Hamer Korina Vector?
zorrow Posted December 23, 2009 Author Posted December 23, 2009 The neck I would say it's between a "C" and a "D" shape. The thickness should be medium+. I like this neck a lot. Very comfortable to play. The fretboard is ebony. That's very slippery; I'm more used to rosewood. The frets are medium jumbo, I think. The action is set the way I like it: not very low, but not high. The fretboard feels very "fast", probably also because the radius seems to be wider than my Vectors'. About the sound now: it's actually very sweet. Compared to my Vectors, the later sound more "cutting", while the Dean is way smoother. To give you an idea, when played unplugged it sounds almost like a classic guitar: loud and clear, with a lot of richness in the mid range and loads of sustain. When plugged, it has almost no "chug". The "Fenderish" "snap" I get from my Vectors (supposedly from the sutainblocks, or so I believe) is not there at all. This guitar vibrates just transparently, like a nylon guitar, though it does handle well my high gain settings --the distorted rhythm tone through my rig is "thick" or "dense", never harsh or aggressive, but it's not muddy either. By the way, I did the test of trying to find the notes when tapping the neck and the body. The body seems to be tuned to Eb, while the neck is definitively G. That means they are a major third apart, which is a consonant interval, so it should be ok --according to Steve Vai's criteria for evaluating the natural resonance of guitars.
BTMN Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Great stuff! Wondered when you were gonna post that up. I really dig the two Czech Korina Vs I own. One in clear like your's and one in Trans Amber. I see your's has had a pickup change at least to the neck slot. What's in it? Enjoy! Light aren't they?
zorrow Posted December 23, 2009 Author Posted December 23, 2009 I see your's has had a pickup change at least to the neck slot. What's in it? The stock Dean pickups were replaced by Duncan JB (bridge) and Jazz (neck). I got the stock pups too. I might try them later. Any hint about their sound? Light aren't they? Yes, which is surprising, given its size. Was that Saint Nick? Just my neighbor veteran HFC'er. But his opinion is important because he knows about guitars, and in addition he's my friend.
backinit Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Congrats Zorrow. I guess you were on the nice list.
BTMN Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 I have never gotten a 100% answer but I belive the pickups in those to be Schaller pups. I have found the ones without a Dean logo sound better than ones with a Dean logo. Not bad but worth a try. I'm sure the combo you have is nice although Duncan '59s tend to sound better in Korina. Funny thing is in the other Czech made Deans the upper level models got Duncans. I never understood why they did not put them in the Korina models. Enjoy! Trans Amber has Duncan Antiquities and the Clear has the unlogoed Deans in it.
zorrow Posted December 24, 2009 Author Posted December 24, 2009 This guitar is addictive. I like the way its neck feels, and I like it A LOT.The sound however is not what I prefer. The neck pickup is great, but the bridge doesn't give me the "attack" I'm used to. Too sweet for my tastes. So, I definitively will try other pups for the bridge position. Can anyone please recommend me something? Preferably a Seymour Duncan, as I don't want to change both pickups.BTW, The stock pups are the unlogoed Deans. I haven't tried them yet.I'm also wondering how humbucking-sized P-90's would sound on this guitar. I definitively want an "edgier" sound than what I'm getting now.
humfree Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 The music store that sold me my Hamers carried those - they were available for about two months as I recall and were in the $400-$500 range.. man, I wish I had gotten a pair when they came out.Nice find.. I don't remember seeing one of those for many, many years.. wow!
LordOfTheThighs Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 Great score on the Czech V. A lot of guitar for the $$$. My Dean ... Not korina, but a pretty nice Dean Time Capsule Z. I really like this guitar. V carve neck. Pretty comfortable. I had never played a V carve before, but I like it.
GaryT Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 I remember them, very well made. They did a Evo Supreme also that was a killer piece. Nice score Bro.
sw686blue Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 Zorrow texted me yesterday saying "You got to see this! Can I come over?" Hell yeah! Well, when he showed up, the guy was grinning from ear to ear. I opened up the super-sized case, and what a stunning guitar! Absolutely flawless! Beautiful korina with a kick ass ebony fretboard. What a sweet sounding (unplugged) and playing guitar! Ionel, did damn good!
BTMN Posted December 25, 2009 Posted December 25, 2009 I put a Duncan SH14 Custom Custom in my '96 USA Korina Caddy and it rips. I even got it custom made in Double Cream by having a cover lightly soldered on. Try the originals. You might like it.
chap Posted December 25, 2009 Posted December 25, 2009 LOL I'm sure it was a real accident!"But honey, I swear it just followed me home."Have a great Christmas everyone.
zorrow Posted December 25, 2009 Author Posted December 25, 2009 LOL I'm sure it was a real accident! "But honey, I swear it just followed me home." Not really, excepting the "surprise factor". Honey had given me a check of a "certain amount" the day of my birthday. She said: "buy the guitar you want, provided it's priced around this amount". I saved that money, because I had no plan of purchasing anything. So, when this Dean arrived I just had to pull the trigger, as my gun was already loaded and also had the boss' authorization to shoot. Have a great Christmas everyone. Ah! This date comes in handy too! Great Christmas to everyone as well!

Ted Posted December 25, 2009 Posted December 25, 2009 Great score on the Czech V. A lot of guitar for the $$$. My Dean ... Not korina, but a pretty nice Dean Time Capsule Z. I really like this guitar. V carve neck. Pretty comfortable. I had never played a V carve before, but I like it. I love the string through asymmetrical V plate on the Dean Zs a lot. Also she is looking good in Black! LOL I'm sure it was a real accident! "But honey, I swear it just followed me home." Not really, excepting the "surprise factor".
