There was lots of great music over the last 10 years. Some of it by bands I knew, some by folks I'd never heard of. Some of these are tremendously obscure (The Pieces), a couple were big hits (Bob Dylan, Fountains of Wayne). The one thing my top 10 have in common is that I've listened to over and over without tiring of them.

A.C. Newman - The Slow Wonder (2004)

The Pieces - The Pieces (2003)

Francine - Forty on a Fall Day (2001)

Gillian Welch - Time (The Revelator) (2001)

Bob Dylan - Love & Theft (2001)

They Might Be Giants - Mink Car (2001)

Suzanne Vega - Beauty & Crime (2007)

Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers (2003)

Merry Amsterburg - Little Steps (2000)

Caitlin Cary & Thad Cockrell - Begonias (2005)

These were near misses:

Midlake - The Trials of Van Occupanther (2006)

Lloyd Cole - The Negatives (2000)

Ron Sexsmith - Blue Boy (2001)

Old 97's - Blame it on Gravity (2008)

Lewis Taylor - Stoned Part I (2002)

Ad Frank - Ad Frank is the World's Best Ex-Boyfriend (2005)

The list seems skewed a bit to the beginning of the decade. I suppose it takes me a while to decide an album is great. It could also be that I haven't had much time to listen to music over the last three years...

I have a hard time thinking what was significant about the aughts, musically.

In the 60s you had psychedelia, Monterrey Pop and Woodstock.

In the 70s you had what we now call classic rock.

In the 80s you had MTV and new music.

In the 90s you had grunge and the beginning of the Lollapalooza-format touring shows.

In the aughts you had...?

It's quite a time span. I really have to think of what's being important to me. Apart from the usual main stream stuff, those were highlights.

Tommy Merry - As Above ... So Below

Tommy Merry - Drawing Down the Moon

Tommy Merry - 3

Oli Brown Band - Open Road

Rob Tognoni, mostly anything over the years.

Queen + PR - The Cosmos Rocks (not just because it is different)

The Darkness, both albums plus Stone Gods plus Hot Leg

Deep Purple - Concerto for Group and Orchestra

Steve Vai - Sound Theories

I think its just a matter of what the corporations are promoting. ... There are some great bands out there but you have to search for them. I have this late 20's girlfriend I hang out with sometimes. Shes always playing me just amazing stuff. Well, its in her Ipod anyways. Buys everything online and downloads. Bands I've never heard of and I try to be somewhat informed. The latest one she sprung on me is "The woven hand" Wow ...
