DEMENTED Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 I am kinda ashamed to admit this but...3 years or so ago, just before I joined this board I was at my cousins guitar shop. I was telling him how I felt G*bsons were too expensive for me considering the build quality when he shows me this little ole Hamer Sunburst , bound and crowned, nice 'burst color, great player and only $250 for me 'cause we're blood ya know? now, before y'all start a flaming me, let me say he had at some point since owning it, installed a third humbucker and glued on a tortise shell pickguard. It was kinda ugly ya know? So .....I passed on it and he ended up selling it to Daddy's Junky Music in Warwick , R.I. for $275. If only I knew...bound & crowned..D'OH!!!!!!!!!!!So, make me feel better, what's your story?
serial Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Hmmm, I suspect BroChris will chime in with the time he passed on the original Electraglide at a show in DC...

KeyOfZ Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 I feel that I may have one in the making My local dealer has a brand new 2004 Monaco Elite Mahogany in Cherry finish that he is letting go for $999.99 with OHSC. All my funds are going towards a custom order but I have played the thing a couple times and it's a very tempting little axe. *sigh*
kizanski Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Are we talkin' "guitars that we didn't buy but should have" or "guitars that we sold that we shouldn't have"?Either way, I have a couple of each. Also there are "guitars that I shouldn't have bought, but DID" stories.

chewie37 Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 No Holy Grail story from me, but I have sold 2 very nice Chaparrals and regretted it. I think I've still got the ebay emails floating around somewhere, but one was a first generation set-neck mini-switch version, and the other was a bolt on, boomer, sustainiac model. Both were white - the set neck had yellowed a bit, but the bolt on was pristine. For whatever reason I got a wild hair and sold them both. The set neck went to Canada and the bolt on went to Rocket Syntist (I think). With hindsight being 20/20 and in my best Home Simpson impression - Doh! On the flip side, way before Mars music went in the crapper (and when they had a decent used gear room in Tampa), I scored an '83 Vector in "Schenker" black/white and a case for $500. So win some/lose some
tafkathundernotes Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Hmmm, I suspect BroChris will chime in with the time he passed on the original Electraglide at a show in DC... Bro Chris has my old Cruisebass - the one I let get away. I'll know it's in good hands and if he ever decides to part with it.... he knows who to call first.
Kurt L Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 4 digit Standard. #0335 - I sold in 1997 for around $850.
cmatthes Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 The Thundernotes "Thunderbass" is getting heavy use (with love, of course!). Brian has first refusal on that one if it ever leaves the rack (and now it comes with TWO pickguards!)I can't bring myself to talk about the sad, sad Electraglide story right now (choke, sniff). I did just find the negatives of that from a picture I took at that show along with a pic of me with a beat '78 Standard. That was in 1990, a year that will forever mock me for not having $350 cash in hand the first day of the show. (yes, it was ACTUALLY $350!!)
BruceM Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Danny & Cindy's Music (former Twin Cities Hamer Dealer), just before they moved to their current location, about 5 years ago IIRC, had a beautiful emerald green artist custom with gold hardware for $999. I think it was the gold hardware that queered the deal for me. I stopped a week later and it was gone. Oh well. I still don't have an emerald green guitar. <sigh>
cmatthes Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 I believe that one was purchased by a guy I used to play in a band with. He bought it from a shop in MN 4-5 years ago as well...coincidence?He bought a nice Hamer Miller logo a few months after that.
David B Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 I passed on a few that bug me a lot.1. near mint '81 Special in sunburst - $300 (I'm stupid)2. pretty beat 4 digit Standard with thin neck - $600 (I'm dumb)3. nice Standard bass in trans. cherry - $500 (you can call me an idiot)This was when you could get Hamers very cheap, so I had many, but these three always bothered me.
kurtsstuff Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 I don't even want to tell you of the many Cali's that have passed through my hands... a few set necks, many many graphic's, and one extremely rare one that I'm working on getting back hopefully!!!!!! shit.....I need a drink....WHO STARTED THIS THREAD!!!!!!
gatorbyte007 Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Hey Guys: Back in 89-90 I bought a light blue cali, with a block graphics from jim oconnor. it had led fret markers, It was used by Neil zaza for his clinics, It was returned to Hamer, Because at the time ,Neil only wanted to play his superman, I bought it for $750.00 from the guy who used to have Kims job. His name was Jim Allen. A great guy. I then decided I had to move to Ft.Lauderdale,Fl. So I sold it For about 800.00. Man do I miss this Guitar. Excuse me while I now go and drink my sorrow away. Steve.
SirDouglas Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 I dont let anything get away i cant live with....... hence why i own 35 guitars even after thinning the herd last month. always remember the one you "let" get away is easily replaced by another somewhere down the road... which is why i dont own 100 gee tars (yet) Sir Douglas Randy
silentman Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 I had a '96 Standard flametop in natural w/dots that foolishly sold to Rockfish. I still want it back.
darc Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 Somewhere around 1999 Neil Zaza's scalloped Watson went up for sale. He posted a reasonable price of $1200 IIRC. Not knowing the market very well at the time, I decided I'd call him *after* lunch and arrange the deal. This story ends in the "got away" pile, obviously; I think that Zaza still resides in CA.
JohnnyB Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 I came across a very nice condition ~ 1981 Special at a local Music-Go-Round with one-piece natural maple figured veneer top. It was $369, but I passed on it because it had a Kahler. It's funny how prejudice works, because actually the guitar sounded and played wonderfully.

Most likely it's languishing at a one Mr. Fungs house.....he's got all the cool guitars...the bastid!!! ya know I love ya Peter...
Jeff R Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 I passed on Standard 0010 or 0015, can't remember which of the two it was, for $1K even in the mid 90s at a vintage show in Texas.
darc Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 "Most likely it's languishing at a one Mr. Fungs house..."Bing! That is correct.
HamStd Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 "Most likely it's languishing at a one Mr. Fungs house..."Who is this Mr. Fung and how do we get into his house to get some of this stash you all talk about ??????I heard a rumor that that he and Ed Roman are one in the same person as you never see the two of them in the same room......hhmmmmmmm Sort of like some of the "characters" here....LOLPeter.P.S. Darc, I can tell you from first hand experience, the Zaza went for more than $1200
hudpucker Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 My first exposure to Hamers was when a buddy bought a checkerboard Special in the early 80s (I don't know the exact year). It was a fantastic guitar and I told him that if he ever wanted to let it go to call me first. Well, a few years later he bought one of the best telecasters I've ever played (still, to this day) and needed cash quickly so he gave me a call....the day after I had bought a freakin' Kramer and was flat broke. So he sold it to a music store and got less money than he wanted. Lose-lose for all. Well, except the music store.
Hamerjunki Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Hello Kurt L...I am the proud owner of that killer tobacco sunburst Standard #0335. Rest assured it has gone to a loving home. It's in great shape and sporting D'addario 9.5s. I bought it from Brian at Bizarre Guitars at the Chicago Guitar show at the Odeum in I think '95 or '96. I'm pretty sure I bought it before '97. The only mods done have been a replacement vol pot on the neck pick up - the orig eventually fried - and Dunlop straplocks carefully and lovingly installed so that I can practice, gig and record with it without fear it doesn't take a nosedive from it's heel strap button. I have crazyglued it's original gold knobs together on a couple of occasions. If you like I can post a picture of me gigging with it a few short weeks ago at Park West in Chicago. It's the most balanced, resonant electric axe I own and it sounds killer through my cranked TopHat King Royale combo w/matching, closed back 2x12 cabinet.Best,HamerjunkiOther Hamers I own:'77 cherry sunburst - Sunburst # 7 0091'79 tobacco sunburst - Sunburst # 9 0985'83 midnight blue Phantom A5 # 3 8253
