sixesandsevens Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 I know the oldest 4-digit models go for quite a bit higher than others, but are there other price brackets out there for USA Standards? What are they? Thanks! Edit: I'm looking for a "player", not an investment.
cynic Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Regardless of year, none of them have ever sold for more than someone was willing to pay.Simply put, 4-digits > 95/96 Korina's > Standard Custom > Mahogany StandardThere are lots of variables within that like a 00XX serial vs a 03XX serial. 001 of 100 vs 042 of 100 for the korina's. Custom upcharges when new may or may not still translate to greater desirability, It would come down to the pool of buyers for a particular sale.
crunchee Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 Don't forget about Da Punisher! One off custom order, sure...but it'sTHE ONE custom order that still gets the lion's share of attention and name recognition. No, I don't own it. Dammit!
LordOfTheThighs Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 Simply put, 4-digits > 95/96 Korina's > Standard Custom > Mahogany Standard4 digits > $4KKorinas > $2KStandard Custom $1500 - $2000 (But the market value appears to be inching up, since Hamer's demise.)Mahogany $1200 - $1500 (Again, the market value appears to be inching up, since Hamer's demise.)I'm no expert, but over the past year or so, this seems to be a ballpark estimate of USED Hamer Standard values, in my estimation.Theres been a few recently on e-vilBay that have sold a bit higher, but a definitive trend hasn't been set ... yet.The fanbois will pony up the $$$ for a Hamer, because of their newfound collectability. Others may be turned off by Hamers "failure" to remainrelevant in the guitar market.
crunchee Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 Where do the Rick Nielsen models fit in? There's the USA Korina RN Futuras, the import "Korina" RN Futuras, then the dozen or so RN Signature Standard Customs that were made for the Japan market:
cmatthes Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 The '97 Nielsen Standard Customs really haven't been sold enough to come up with a market price. I'd say that I've seen two for sale in the last decade, and only one was in the US. At the time, they were both priced just slightly higher than the regular Standard Custom from that era. That being said, the more recent Standard Customs seem to bring higher prices than the '95-'2000 versions in general. Just a trend I've noticed - it could be because people paid about a grand more for the more recent ones new than they would have paid new in the late '90s.For reference, I paid $1,250 in 1995 for one of the first "reissued" BRAND NEW Standard Customs in '59 Burst from Dave's Guitar Shop. In 2007, I paid well more than a grand higher than that for my Greenburst Standard Custom from Elduave's Guitar Shop (Rocketeria). The 2007 Standard is really a much better guitar, which I found really hard to believe. As far as the Korina Futuras, same as the Nielsen Standards - there were even less of those done, so a market is tough to nail down. Those would probably bring better money than most Standard Customs, more like in the $2k-$3k range, I'd think. Same with the Nielsen Korina models. Part of the problem with the Futura guitar is that most people absolutely hate that body shape! Definitely an acquired taste - I like 'em, but that's because I've played them and appreciate the ergonomic genius behind that design.
sixesandsevens Posted July 4, 2013 Author Posted July 4, 2013 Regardless of year, none of them have ever sold for more than someone was willing to pay. Simply put, 4-digits > 95/96 Korina's > Standard Custom > Mahogany Standard Ha! I guess it sounded more like an investment question. I want one to rock out on, not stick under a bed. While I have a sense of how Studios and Specials are selling, I've not been watching Standards. The Punisher caught my eye when it was for sale a while back, and so I'm trying to get a sense of current used pricing so I can maybe get a deal on an under-appreciated one. . Simply put, 4-digits > 95/96 Korina's > Standard Custom > Mahogany Standard 4 digits > $4K Korinas > $2K Standard Custom $1500 - $2000 (But the market value appears to be inching up, since Hamer's demise.) Mahogany $1200 - $1500 (Again, the market value appears to be inching up, since Hamer's demise.) I'm no expert, but over the past year or so, this seems to be a ballpark estimate of USED Hamer Standard values, in my estimation. Theres been a few recently on e-vilBay that have sold a bit higher, but a definitive trend hasn't been set ... yet. That's just about what I was looking for. While not a Standard, where would a sustainblock Blitz fall n there? Thanks everybody!
hamerhead Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 I'd think a SB Blitz would fall right below the 'hog Standards - $500-$600 for a player to $1000-$1200 for a 6-on-a-side museum piece. I can't recall ever seeing one at $1200, so maybe smoking crack this early isn't the best idea.
velorush Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 Ha! I guess it sounded more like an investment question. I want one to rock out on, not stick under a bed. My sentiments, exactly! While I am in awe of the four-digits (I've only played Murkat's, and it, unplugged [it's ALIVE, BTW!]) and think the bound and crowned issues and reissues are fantastic, I'd be afraid to take them very far out of the house. But something like HamStd has up on the FS board: That's perfection for my purposes! The Standard, stripped down to its essential elements. Beautiful, but only as an aside - function over form!
MCChris Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 That's perfection for my purposes! The Standard, stripped down to its essential elements. Go black with the knobs and guard and that's my idea of perfection.

Steve Haynie Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 I thought the 90's korina Standards were in the same price range as the maple topped Standards.

sixesandsevens Posted July 6, 2013 Author Posted July 6, 2013 Hrm. Is the blitz the same basic dimensions as the standard?
dobieboy Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 Any opinions on an '04 Custom ordered Korina Std without a guard..
sixesandsevens Posted July 7, 2013 Author Posted July 7, 2013 Any opinions on an '04 Custom ordered Korina Std without a guard.. My opinion is that it would be most rockworthy.
cmatthes Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 Any opinions on an '04 Custom ordered Korina Std without a guard..Purely my opinion, but I'd put it closer to a regular Standard Custom and not as much as a limited run Korina Standard.
sixesandsevens Posted July 7, 2013 Author Posted July 7, 2013 So this Standard at the Music Zoo may be "overpriced" anywhere from $500 - $1000?http://www.themusiczoo.com/product/18809/2007-Hamer-GSTC-Standard-Custom-Electric-Guitar-59-Burst---Used/

Again, the collectability of Standards may be raising the prices. But those white EMGs on that ... very wrong looking.
cmatthes Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 It's a dealer, so he's going to try to make a profit on it, naturally. That's how business works! I personally think it's priced too high at that price, but somebody who wants that particular guitar right now and doesn't care about price might think that's a great deal.

I personally think it's priced too high at that price, but somebody who wants that particular guitar right now and doesn't care about price might think that's a great deal. Agreed. I've definitely paid the "convenience tax" to buy used from a store once or twice, so I get that. Phrasing my question another way, how long do you think an internet buyer would have to wait to find a Standard Custom for under $2000? A quick search on eBay turned up just a few recent sales of USA models and the custom went for $2900. The mahogany one went for something less than $1500.
cynic Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 I'd consider $2900 an anomaly. If you're ready to buy, post a wanted to buy thread and see if someone can help you out. Otherwise, I wouldn't think it would be more than couple weeks to a couple months max before one is listed in that range. You have to be first to find it though. If you really want one fast, have Feynman post the wtb for you. People used to line up to sell him stuff...now they just give it for free.
