Hamer Time Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 How about "identical" cousins:My Hamer Blitz Bass and Gibson Explorer BassHow do they compare?
Dasein Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 Here's a shot of my early 80's P - Bass. I just liked the shot. Bass was my original main instrument (after the accordion). I cut my teeth on an early Ibanez Jazz Bass copy which was awesome -- loved it (it was a school instrument) until it got ripped off by another kid at school (I then had to start lugging my own bass to school everyday - 2 miles). The handle on my case broke after about a year -- It's still broken thirty years later - lol.
Toadroller Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 ^^^No, no. That's pretty good, actually.
blitzcruise Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 How about "identical" cousins:My Hamer Blitz Bass and Gibson Explorer BassHow do they compare? They feel and play very similar. The Gibson has a brighter tone than the Hamer.

Buuut.... they are either sad players (sorry but tru), sad toned vids or simply played too much like a regular bass... What can you tell me about them? I'd love to test drive one for a while, but I am a little afraid that they are a bit of a one trick pony... much like a stand-up bass can be..."
mc2 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 gonna ping u about the Ashbory basses..."I've searched YouTube for examples of these babies.Buuut.... they are either sad players (sorry but tru), sad toned vids or simply played too much like a regular bass...What can you tell me about them?I'd love to test drive one for a while, but I am a little afraid that they are a bit of a one trick pony... much like a stand-up bass can be..."The Ashbory Basses are rather odd ducks but they definitely do have their fans. The original Guild ones were not made in great numbers in the 80s...a little over 1,000 made if I recall. But I guess the demand was there since DeArmond do the reissue and made a lot of them. I had always wanted one and, after I finally did, decided to try and fing all of the original colors. Like M&Ms, I guess. But yeah, they are pretty much a one trick pony and a little quirky. They play OK but the scale length is tight if you have big hands. But it is a lot better than lugging an upright if you only have a few tunes you want an upright sound on. The trick to getting these to play right is to use talcum powder so your fingers don't drag on the rubbery strings. That MkII Ashbory I have at the top of the photo is a longer scale and looks sort of like a Steinberger. I like it better than the regular Ashbory. But they made less than 100 of the MkII back around 1990 and none were imported to the U.S., so they are hard to find. The road case in the pic actually came with the black one form a guy who toured with it.You DO get some odd looks when you pull it out to play bass.

mc2 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Thanks for fixing the links to live pics. Sorry for posting so many...I was trapped inside in the back room because some guy cleaning my carpets in the middle of the house, so I had some time to kill That upside down TBird pic looks correct on my Photobucket but posts upside down. Strange.
Bass Guy Dave Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Mind: Blown. Pants: Soiled. I think my fave of the pile above would have to be that unbound 4-string Standard bass with the single P and the Gibson bridge. That just screams 'perfect' to me. Someday, I really need to get an 8 string.... These pics are GAS inducing, for sure... The rest of my little crew is a cheapie Slammer short-scale 4 string, an EBMM Sterling that's an awesome bass, an Import Chap 4 that's not bad at all, my old, frankensteined Peavey Fury 4 string from 1989, and an old, beat, de-fretted (before I got it,) Gibson EB3 I affectionately refer to as my "Secret Weapon." though it rarely gets used--it sounds awesome.
gorch Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Since my son play bass, there is a touch point to basses in the house. Once I came to a Slammer Series bass cheap.
chromium Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Some of mine. What are the pickups in that last one... Q-tuners?Nice ones - love the Stanley Clarke Sig.
ptm1diver Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Yes, they are Q tuners and it has an Audere 4 band EQ preamp with Z mode switch. There is a matching Strat style guitar also. The tops and Headstock lams were cut from the same block of Cocobollo. The bass headstock is below. Here is a picture of both together.
