Humbuckers and a wraparound bridge. I haven't seen this combination on a gold top SC before. Custom order?

The price seems very reasonable - why is this one still available?

The inlays are off-center.

Which picture can you see well enough to make that statement?

He's 'joshing' you.

What I will say, however, is that this guitar has issues - somebody let this guitar "fall-over", and get dinged in the neck and nut area. I don't know about you, but dings in the neck is unacceptable for a guitar where TOP DOLLAR is requested. $1,300 for a Studio? With dings in the neck like that? You CANNOT be serious.

If someone is going to request that kind of money, the least they could do is have the neck repaired by a competent luthier and have those dings repaired and have that nut checked-out. I wouldn't touch this guitar with a ten-foot pole before that was done, and I certainly wouldn't buy it via ebay looking like that 'as-is'.

That chip/chunk out at the nut would especially be a concern for me

I've seen similar finish lifting at the nut on a lot of Hamers from that era. There have been several post on this board about repairing it with a drop of super glue.

I see one relatively small ding and some very highly magnified minor finish damage. The photos of the front and back of the headstock show that there's no structural damage to the neck.

Not much to be concerned about, IMO.

It's too much money for a less than perfect Studio, Dave. That's what we're saying.

I'm not dripping super glue or doing shit to the guitar for $1300.

Well, it's not like he's asking 4 grand for a Californian.

Show me another gold top Studio Custom with humbuckers and a wrap tail and I'll concede.

I can have one built for that much.

Rarity doesn't translate into value here.

The "buy-it-now" condition of this guitar tells me that the seller doesn't care about "the basics". Clearly, any REAL guitarist would have a problem with a guitar neck that has finish 'chunks' in it - you kinda feel those things when trying to play it....if the seller isn't going to fix THAT, what else is wrong that we're not being told about? Would you buy a car that has both headlights bashed-in with a crowbar? "Yea, I could fix it, but I don't WANNA - now give me Top Dollar anyway....."

Riiiiiight.

Exactly.

How often do you see comments in a For Sale ad like "...easily buffed out..." or "...its a simple wiring repair..." or "needs a good setup."?

Screw you! If it's easily buffed out or a simple repair, then YOU do it!

It's like the bass that Elderly was selling some time back, stating that the neck was warped and "only needs to be straightened with a heat press."

Sure. We all have a heat press in our guitar room, don't we?

Another good example

"The neck feels great and plays exceedingly well, but when you sight down the neck you'll notice that there is a perceivable twist in the neck (perhaps best seen in photo #9). A professionally carved bone nut has been installed and perfectly matches the curve of the twist, so that the neck plays cleanly in all registers with no buzzing or dead spots, and low, consistent action."

I get it. I just think we're seeing completely different things in the auction photo.

I see two issues:

1. the lacquer has separated from the side of the nut and the wood just below the nut. I've seen this issue on many Hamers. It may be related to the ding at the first fret, but it just as likely isn't. I don't see any missing wood.

2. a ding through the finish and into the wood at the first fret. I don't see any missing wood here either. I also don't think it's in a location that would impede playing.

IMO, these look like minor cosmetic issues that could either be touched up, or not. I'm confident I could play this guitar at the same level of incompetence as any of my others.

I give the seller credit for showing a highly magnified photo. That actually makes me a bit more confident that he's not hiding anything.

Just my opinion.

That Gretsch, on the other hand, is messed up!

I agree. Anything I'ver played for long has worse cosmetic issues than that goldtop. It looks pretty badass and the seller does have perfect feedback and has provided close-ups.

It's still WAY over-priced, guys...

So it's a goldtop. Big fucking deal.

Way overpriced? Studio Custom - 96 I think, fair market value for a Studio Custom about $1200? Maybe $1100 for a super bargain. But this one is a gold top with humbuckers and a wraparound, rare. Maybe a little high, but I don't think it way overpriced.

Posted

I've had several Studio wrappers with humbuckers.

These are not rare guitars, and they go for about $850-900.

$1100 is a home run.

$1300 is a grand slam.

Posted

Lesson One: No goldtop is worth what a flametop is.

Lesson Two: Wrap-around Hamers aren't that rare and don't pull hundreds more.

Lesson Three: It won't sell for $1,300.

Value w/ stated flaws: $1,000 plus shipping.

JMHO......and I'm not that humble.

We could discuss it hours...and finally market shall decide...

This is yet available for weeks now.

Don't you think ?

Of course not. We learned this in the Best Californian in the World thread.

Studios with wrap tails and humbuckers are common. But this is a Studio Custom. Gold tops and flame tops in sunburst are about equal in value. 90% of Gold top Studio Customs have P90s. 99% of Studio Customs have TOMs. I don't think I've ever seen another Studio Custom with a wraptail bridge.

Kiz is just cranky because the Giants lost to the Cowboys.
