Thanks for the props, guys. I've reached out to the OP about my red sunburst that might be more to his liking. He's probably overwhelmed with the potential.

Overwhelmed is right... my head's spinning a bit trying to converge upon a few models and/or years. As has been pointed out, I do prefer 'burst finishes as opposed to solid colors, and gravitate more towards block inlays, bound tops and boards, etc. Mainly because I'm not likely to have several guitars, probably just this one, at least for a while, and would like it to be aesthetically special (no pun intended!) for me. Even that leaves a fair number of options.

Rest assured I am looking at all of the FS links that people are posting and trying to narrow it down - I think I do have a #1 contender now but don't want to say anything and jinx myself. Once I get through the detritus of the upcoming holiday (and see what's left in my bank account) I'll make the move!

Having played several, I'd go out of my way to get one with a sustainblock bridge.  I've got all three styles right now (TOM, wraptail, SB) and the SB is my fave by a pretty big stretch.

Plus it's period-correct on the whole Tull thing. ;)

That would narrow the years down to '79 to early 80's, yes?

If you're looking to keep it at or below $1500, it narrows the years to 80-84.  If you're willing to go a little higher, you get 79, 78, and 77, with each year becoming a hair more expensive respectively, even though most prefer the 79 year Sunburst.

There were a few small runs and one-offs here and there throughout all the Hamer years that ended up with a sustain block, but nowhere near the numbers produced late 70s early 80s.

It all starts with the sustain block- and then curiosity (and HFC for sale section) gets the better of you :)

Good luck in the hunt! You really can't go wrong (with old or new-er). Pretty consistent wow-factor upon receipt...

So I thought I'd update my thread...

I am now the proud owner of an '02 Studio Custom, courtesy of the side-effects of Michael_B's GAS.

It is truly a beautiful guitar - the finish, construction quality, wood, are all superb. The sound quality is amazing - warmer clean tone than my '79 LPC, plenty of sustain and "growl" when overdriven, even through my crappy little Marshall MG10CD. I'm just starting to explore the sonic palette. Playability/action is perhaps just shy of my LPC ("fretless wonder"), but it's strung with 010 and I'll go down a notch to 009 (I used to play 008/038 on my LPC). It should be fine, and I just need more practice (I was playing "Hymn 43" at one time last night an my wife said I sounded "real good" - bless her heart!).

Anyhow - very happy with it, and I owe a lot of thanks to all of you who weighed in with information, opinions, ideas etc., and especially Michael_B. And BTW - if any "first timer" needs tips on how to pack a guitar for shipment - ask Michael - it was impeccably packed, down to small details like foam protection over the fretboard. Wonder if run-of-the-mill mfrs pack so well!

Anyhow, now I'll go "shut up and play my guitar"!

My first Hamer looked just like that.  And then I got another, another, then another....

Bite your tongue!  I haven't even had it a week yet!  I have to admit I find it to be a really beautiful guitar, I'll occasionally stop playing and just hold it out and look at it, admire it. What a dweeb, I know!

Maybe in a few years I'll treat myself and get that 79/80 burst... but for now this one makes me smile!
