DaveH Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 Its September and I've had some Led Zeppelin spinning this evening. I was never a 'Zep Head', so to speak, in fact I appreciate them more today than I did in 1973... they have some really awesome stuff. Was just listening to Houses Of The Holy, and that album is full of wins. The songwriting combo of Page/Plant was hard to beat, and I think one of the things I really appreciate about Pages playing and technique is the recklessness and hint of sloppiness that he embellishes. The backbone that Jones and Bonzo laid down just brings everything together beautifully. What are your favorite albums and/or recordings?
mathman Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 Where to start and where to end... "Achilles Last Stand" "All My Love" "Black Dog" "Dancing Days" "Fool in the Rain" "Heartbreaker" "Hey, Hey, What Can I Do" "Hot Dog" "I Can't Quit You Baby "I'm Gonna Crawl" "Immigrant Song" "In My Time of Dying" "In the Evening" "In the Light" "Kashmir" "The Lemon Song" "Nobody's Fault but Mine" "No Quarter" "The Ocean" "The Rain Song" "Since I've Been Loving You" "The Song Remains the Same" "Stairway to Heaven" "Ten Years Gone" "Thank You" "Trampled Under Foot" "The Wanton Song" "Wearing and Tearing" "What Is and What Should Never Be" "When the Levee Breaks" "Whole Lotta Love" "You Shook Me" "Your Time Is Gonna Come"
gtrdaddy Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 Jimmy Page was the reason I wanted to play guitar as a teen. I like everything they did. Hard to pick one album , they were all stellar and Page's production was fantastic. One of the few bands where each and every record was a must listen. The musicianship of the individual members was phenomenal and combined, well they were just destined for greatness. III gets the spin probably most over the years because it stood out from the rest being so acoustically oriented, and when craving something other than electric guitar it has been very satisfying without growing old. Can't say the same about Déjà Vu, can we. I think that's another reason the Grateful Dead lasted so long, their light approach to music had kept it fresh for fans I think. Zeppelin III has that same light feel to it. Love it. But gimme some Zep anytime. Any Zep. They were my reason for being as a teen.
Jakeboy Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 Zep I and II do it for me any day at any time. But I love them all. Heartbreaker MADE me play guitar. In the Evening is such a great Strat song. I could go on and on……
Dave Scepter Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 So now you better STOP! To rebuild all your ruins~
Steve Haynie Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 Since I've Been Loving You and I'm Gonna Crawl are those bluesy songs that impressed me. I'm Gonna Crawl is all about dynamics. It slowly builds. It falls. It keeps moving. The song is perfect.
murkat Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 The hole catalogue except for Coda, Presence, sometime in thru the outdoor
Steve Haynie Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 Presence was the 8 string bass album. Once you play Nobody's Fault But Mine on an 8 string bass you get it. That is the sound of that song.

Physical Graffiti is the album I listen to the most, followed by III and Houses of the Holy.
DaveH Posted September 9, 2021 Author Posted September 9, 2021 It's kinda humorous in a way, sort of reminds me of the YT vids of songs not to play in a music store... I haven't seen a single mention of one of their their biggest hits. (not that I blame anyone, it isn't one I've listened to intentionally in many moons. That said, there is a lot of good stuff on the ZoSo album. The early stuff definitely rules.

I was going to say the exact same thing but wasn't sure if other members had a decent stereo or ears to be able to hear all the subtle nuances 🤣
cynic Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 The squeak is so forward it's easily heard on my laptop speakers.
mathman Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 I know this is a bit off topic but I am really proud of our attempts at a couple of Zep songs a few years ago when we got back together. I couldn't post them on youtube, they were removed. I don't know how good the algorithm for song matching is, but I fool myself to think these must sound close enough. Don't know if this will play in the post or not. good times bad times https://kirkpitts.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Good-Times-bad-times-iPhone.m4v This one was fun, I overdubbed Robert Plant vocals on us playing What is and what should never be. Go ahead and fast forward to about 45 seconds at the start. Don't know why it had that at the beginning. http://kirkpitts.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/What-is-and-what-should-be-Poopapalooza-iPhone.m4v You have to click to view.
cmatthes Posted September 10, 2021 Posted September 10, 2021 Zep was brilliant, and I can still drop the needle on any album and go back in time. I’ve seen several really great tribute acts over the last few decades, and as damned great as some of them are, I know it’s not Zep. I’ve seen Jason’s JBLZE 4-5 times and will probably catch them again this fall. He’s the best Bonzo out there by far.
Brooks Posted September 11, 2021 Posted September 11, 2021 Greatest band of all time. Tremendous. Influential. Timeless. Some of Page's orchestrated overdubs are very deep from a compositional level; Ten Years Gone, Achilles Last Stand, The Rain Song. Tea For One. My faves are Physical Graffiti, Presence, & II, but there are timeless gems on every album. I am especially fond of the live version of No Quarter from 2007; Plant sometimes went overboard on his vocal ad libs live, but he is restrained and controlled on this version, plus the recording quality is spine chilling;
Brooks Posted September 11, 2021 Posted September 11, 2021 Plant has a house in Austin, and seems like a normal guy (imagine taking the kids trick or treating and he answers the door!). My pal from college David Pulkingham has played with Plant a bunch, he is super talented & is having the career we all wanted.
Greg G Posted September 11, 2021 Posted September 11, 2021 Hard to pick a favorite. Growing up in the 70s we listened to tons of Zep. If you want to hear one of the best Zep "cover" bands, give Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes live at The Greek a spin.
scottcald Posted September 14, 2021 Posted September 14, 2021 Their mix of blues, folk, rock and even other influences to me is pretty much unbeatable. I love that they didn't let being a 4 piece limit their studio work. Their layering on songs was phenomenal. Page had to pick and choose what parts to play live, so the songs had a different life live. I admire that Plant continues to put out new music and rework the old songs live rather than just do tours trying to sound like he did in 1970. I also think that the Celebration Day show was a fitting cap to their work.
Dave Scepter Posted September 14, 2021 Posted September 14, 2021 To me the Immigrant song is one of the coolest hard rock songs ever created... just with the galloping rhythmic intro and the Viking cry in the beginning is just next level stuff... classic timeless awesomeness! Ah-ah-ahhhh~ 🤘
