Biz Prof Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 Stumbled across this a few minutes ago on "Bookface" Marketplace. No affiliation. Is the owner a member here? And haven't I seen this Standard on the HFC in years past? https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1593538087737610/?mibextid=dXMIcH
cmatthes Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 Yeah…left out quite a bit of info. “Reworked” is more accurate than “Restored”. Seller is trying to get back the money Music Zoo ripped him off for. De-Kahlered, retopped (with 1/4” maple, not the veneer like the original), rebound, repaired the nut area, refinished, wrong sized logo transfer… It looks nice, but shouldn’t be selling for anywhere near what an unmolested ‘70s Standard would sell for in the current market.

cmatthes Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 They’re selling in the $7,500 and up tier now. I’ve seen several priced at $12k get reduced to $10k and are still sitting nearly a year later.
Ham Rex Posted April 22, 2023 Posted April 22, 2023 It's not bound and crowned either. So there is that to consider too.
VECTOR Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 Please show some pics for those without fb. Thanks

DaveL Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 did not like this guitar at 5k back in the day... think he would have been better off with RS, Murkat or a couple guys in Pennsylvania who could have done the resto more vintage correct.
specialk Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 I just checked the Reverb listing. $9,500 + $350s/h. Still too high
kizanski Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 I absolutely love everything about it, except the price of course. I'll take a reworked 4-digit any day. I know the QC and the condition are going to be better than an original one, that's for sure. And that top is exceptional.
dgstandard Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 It is a fabulous guitar. The guys at Hamer did great work. I wish I never sold it.
Dave Scepter Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 Yup, I'm liking it as well... BUT, not a fan of gluing a block of wood filling the Kahler hole... probably makes no difference but I hate visualizing the stoppage of the grain flow... I totally get why, but it still bugs me~😬

The Shark Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 I hope it sells for big money. I have #0221 and it's on the launch pad, if I can get the big bucks.
Ham Rex Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 I've got #0166 and it's not going anywhere. I love it. I still have the original Dimarzio's but I purchased opposite JB Zebras and made a cream dual coil and put a 59 in the neck. I used a Bonsai pot calcium eraser to remove the Seymour Duncan logo. I know I paid a lot but i love the guitar.

I'm not following what you're saying.

I think he's merely saying his preference is for the Standard to have been unmolested (Tri Power 389 per the GTO specs) versus having a Kahler implanted and then replaced with spliced 'hog (crate 350 V-8). Alas, that ship sailed decades ago. A good 'hog patch under a new maple top works just fine for these sorts of restorations.

In this scenario we had a choice between a Kahlered Standard and a repaired/reworked Standard. Short of a trip in your time machine, the "original" option was long, long gone. The finished product, imo, is gorgeous.

kizanski Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 That said, the idea of a 350 Chevy engine in a GTO is enough to make me vomit. I made many enemies at scores of car shows I attended over the years.
