svl Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 Since the master Murkat hung up his tool belt I've been doing all my guitar work myself, but the time has come for my main baby to get a refret (which I am not tool equipped to do). I'm hoping someone here can recommend a new master, preferably a cat that will do the refret with just the neck (I ordered a duplicate replacement neck so I need the body). Warmoth Strat 4 bolt, 22 fret, no binding, 6105 SS. Thanks in advance for any help y'all can provide.
JGale Posted February 6, 2024 Posted February 6, 2024 Phil Jacoby Philtone. He is on facebok. Greg Platzer gregplatzerguitars.com Jeff Richard carondeletpickups.com They are all swamped, but Carondelet is your best bet for reasonably quick turn around. I have had work done by all three.

My buddy Jim used Phil. His time-frame was, to be kind, underestimated. But the guitar was phenomenal.

Dave Scepter Posted February 7, 2024 Posted February 7, 2024 Honestly, I would just audition a competent local Luthier as the shipping cost alone will add a couple of hundred to the cost... Google someone local with credentials and ask to check out his/her work...
svl Posted February 7, 2024 Author Posted February 7, 2024 Just shipping the neck, no big shipping cost. Thanks on the suggestions, will reach out and see who's available.

svl Posted February 7, 2024 Author Posted February 7, 2024 Can't, pro, play for a living, need the body (just ordered a replacement neck, as stated in opening post). Found a bunch of guys online that do it, just wanted some rec's from people here as I trust the community.

Jakeboy Posted February 8, 2024 Posted February 8, 2024 My local guy is Eron Harding at Backwoods Guitar in Sedalia, MO. Does fantastic work at great prices. Tell him Mark Revel sent you.
cmatthes Posted February 8, 2024 Posted February 8, 2024 Phil Jacoby is an ass. Don’t waste your time. Steve Parker (Parklane Guitars in NJ) is the old Musikraft fret and neck guy. Some of the best fretwork I’ve ever encountered. Shane Huss is also incredibly talented and reasonable. He’s in PA.
santellavision Posted February 8, 2024 Posted February 8, 2024 Roy at RS Guitarworks. They are excellent. I trusted them with refretting my Vintage guitars.
svl Posted February 8, 2024 Author Posted February 8, 2024 Here's what I'm noticing- refrets on a setneck guitar is a necessary evil, but on a bolt on the pricing doesn't make sense. I paid less for a brand new, complete duplicate custom neck than what I'm being quoted for a refret. Crazy. Thanks. Chris & Ernie, I will give 'em a shout.
HoboMan Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 Scott Bond at Fat Cat Guitars: https://www.fatcatcustomguitars.com/ Scott has done several stainless steel refrets for me. They always come out perfect. My Les Paul
hamerhead Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 ^^^ That one just looks like a screamer, Dave. Nice!

svl Posted February 9, 2024 Author Posted February 9, 2024 Thanks, Hobo. He's local, so that's a plus.
BadgerDave Posted February 11, 2024 Posted February 11, 2024 George McPhail at Music Gallery in Highland Park is a master with decades of experience. I'm not sure he does neck-off rerets, but it would be worth a call. Fast turnaround in my experience.
svl Posted February 11, 2024 Author Posted February 11, 2024 I had George do a refret for me years ago (with the Plek), great job but their prices are up there now (cheaper for me to buy another complete neck). Looks like Hobo for the win- Scott gave me a great price and an extremely fast reply to my inquiry. Will let everyone know how it works out for those looking for a refret in the future...

Well, I mean, refrets are in many ways more difficult than building a neck. You have to take out the old frets, deal with the inevitable messed up fret slots, most likely re-level the fretboard, possibly refinish it (if it's maple), and then you have to put frets back in. I've never had to deal with it, thankfully. Not yet anyway. Just lots of fret dresses.

It makes total sense if your guitars are valuable... you need that ORIGINAL neck to maintain that value
svl Posted February 13, 2024 Author Posted February 13, 2024 It makes sense when you get reasonable pricing, which I finally did.
