Researching all things Plexi: suggestions wanted
Jakeboy replied to Travis's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
You have to decide what Plexi means and what P,exi tone you are looking for. A JTM-JMP-1974-2061 are all actual Plexis. When most people,e talk about the Plexi sound, they mean the JMP 1959 100 watter or the 1987 50 watter. But it can mean the JTM or the Bluesbreaker (JTM combo). And the 70s JMPs got hotter and brighter as the decade went on concluding with the JCM. The 1968 JMP circuit is considered by many t9 e the best, but horses for courses. My Valvetech 25 will do t(e tweed 5f6axJTM and JMP tones. My TopHatMini Junior HG has the 1968 preamp and will do 5f6a-JTM-JMP-JCM I like the versatility and those circuits varied based upon component values. Decide what Plexi tone/circuit you want and grab one that is built to those specs and match speakers accordingly. The 50 watt JMP circuit with a 20 watt 6v6 power section does it for me at sane volumes and sounds like, well, a Plexi. Plenty great Marshall builders out there. -

Beato has been knockin’ it outta the park lately with his interviews… Joe/Brad, Pat Travers, and now DG.

If this is AI, I hate it with a passion because it isn’t real. Fake computer BS. If this is a real band, kudos for a good idea which reminds me of Otis Redding covering Satisfaction. But it sounds like AI. The guitar solo should have been a sax. But that’s an easy fix with AI. It has all the classic soul cliches …in spades. Have I said how much this boomer hates AI fake music?

I would rather say “I wish he played the 5 neck “ than “He couldn’t lift the 5 neck.” Shit, last time I saw Aerosmith they didn’t play Train Kept a Rollin”…that was a bigger disappointment for me than RN not playing any one particular guitar. -

I have a Phase 95 and it is simply a perfect phaser for me. GLWTS -
The band needed more rehearsal in the early shows….the drummer didn’t know how to start songs or where to come in and Chris Robinson was staring at his video monitors for the lyrics. A lot better now. Deleo and Brad are holding it all together. I do wish they were playing more Project and less Aerosmith. When playing with Brad, Joe plays very differently than when he is the sole guitarist. He is capable of holding all the guitar parts down alone…but Brad”s perfect guitar presence allows him to take risks, get sloppy, and go on sonic excursions that don’t always work. And this is coming from a HUGE JP fanboi! All that said, I am glad he and Brad are out there cranking it out. I wish they were coming to KC. I saw the JPP at The Back of The Rack bar in Ocean City, Md in the spring of 1983, IIRC. Mind-numbingly loud and I was pressed against the front of the stage at Perry’s feet. One of the best shows ever. I still have the pick Joe threw to me.

As a huge JP and BW fan, I have been following this tour on YouTube. I have very mixed feelings about it.

Recommended soldering station Canada/USA?

X3… I have been using Weller 40 watters on my amps and guitars for years. Iron, holder, and a sponge. It just works well. -

It is at least time for him to no longer attempt to play the 5 neck. That made me embarrassed for him. He is a rocker who loves to rock. Time to stick to single necks. Ugh. That hurt me to watch him struggle like that. -

CT was my first proper concert and I have seen them more than any other. I still miss Bun E. He was a major part of their intelligent quirkiness that I love. Expect a stream of great and fun guitars. Tom’s 8 and 12 string basses sound great too. Humor, intelligence, and great fun songs. Last two time I saw them I got there in time for soundcheck (outdoors) and they played Beatles tunes like Dr. Robert and She Said, She Said. Enjoy! -

I LOVE ribbons on guitar cabs! GLWTS -
I used both an SBUS and an SBUK for the church gig. Per typical, the US didn’t work for me unless I was on the tweed setting. The UK was magic. If I was still playing on a church praise team, I’d buy on in an instant. My musical collaborator and Rumpel Pickup owner AC uses the US as his main jazz amp. He p,ay is some SERIOUS jazz projects and he makes the US sound amazing.

Ok…you prolly know what I am gonna say..,here are two KILLER options: 1. TopHat Mini Junior High Gain (HG) combo in 20 watts..,a 1968 JMP preamp married to a 20 watt 6v6 output section. Does tweed Bassman-JTM-JMP-JCM with some preamp tweaks. A perfect plexi for me. Order one and wait for Brian to build it…or.., 2. Retro Rockitt 50 watt JMP Plexi head in black and tan, I’ll meet you in St Louis to deliver, we’ll have a couple Old Fashioneds and you can pay the true owner (HFC mystery) if you like it.,,which you most certainly will. Both are fucking rocking plexi options. Oh, and @RobB is so very correct, a treble booster into a plexi is a wonderful thing. -
These pics just build anticipation…am I right @Travis?
