A friend of mine is in a relatively new Cheap Trick tribute band and he asked me to help him find a USA Standard flametop.  I'm looking around on Reverb and Ebay but I figured some of you might know where I could find one.

No horse in the race, but as a practical consideration for a specifically gigging guitar, wouldn't something like this Korean Standard be a better option?

Cost is around 10% of the real deal. Much less anxiety about theft or breakage!

Here's another.

The added benefit is these can be altered to suit the tribute band (checkerboard paint schemes, for example) without regret.

Everything is for sale, hahaha

It's been so many years since I bought a Hamer that I'm not used to seeing ZERO flametop USA Standards listed on ebay or Reverb.

If your going to go this way, try to find one where the high "E" is not completely covered by the headstock.

I've seen a few out there before.

This will be a closer headstock carve to the original Crowned and Bound Standard.

In my opinion you'll have to swap out tuners, pots to CTS, bridge to a Quality USA or German made, brass tail piece (hard to find) or Zinc Tailpiece (heavier than Aluminum).

For an awesome build have Josh Gravelin wind you a set of pickups.

Other opinions about pickups go from Original traditional Dimarzio's from early Hamers to Seymour Duncan 59 neck and JB bridge and probably more.

I think most would agree to consult with Josh Gravelin and get a personal set wound. Less than vintage Dimarzio's and just a little more than modern Seymours.

Here are examples of headstocks from a 1996 Signature Rick Nielsen 59 Standard Hamer and from what I understand was only made for the Japanese market. About 15 pieces.

And a 1979 4 digit C&B Dark Burst Standard.

Mommies alright

Daddies alright

Good luck with your awesome band.

Remember! Remember!

To play for you effing fans.

Good luck!

I have one, but it will be expensive.  The flames can be felt through the paint on the top.  Will Boggs "WB" GregWinds tapped and ready.  Hasn't really been played.

WB Gregwinds for the WIN!

Recently I was looking in my old pickup box for a pickup to put on my Artist Korina Custom, and found TWO WB Gregwinds.  I have no recollection on how I got them.

Please sell them to your new buddy Dave!

I definitely have two fine candidates including a very "Special One" (pun intended).  I wasn't planning on selling either one just yet, but I could change my mind depending on what your friend's budget is.  If you don't know what a "Zandard" is, search that term in the forums and familiarize yourself.  As you can see, that one has seen action in a Cheap Trick tribute band before.  Added bonus: I'm just down the road outside of Richmond so we wouldn't have to worry about shipping.

I passed this on to him, we'll see what he says.  Give me a ballpark figure if you can...

There was a nice Korean checkerboard standard showed up for a short stint on Reverb a day or so ago. $1800 US I think.
